How does an overweight woman wear brogues?

MindYourUsage · 23/01/2026 14:53

How, HOW I ask you....

do I wear brogues as an overweight woman? And still look feminine? I carry all my weight on my thighs and hips if that makes any difference.

Please don't say "wear jumper dresses" - they cling in all the wrong bloody places and make me look like a sack of spuds, or they don't and make me look like an empty shapeless sack awaiting said spuds.

I've googled how to style these, and am just bamboozled with pictures of very pretty skinny 20 year olds in them, prancing about in skinny ankle tapered trousers. 🙃to be fair I used to look like them at that age too....

I have a cupboard full of lovely hamble oaks in all different colours... tan, black, cream/pink, dark green, navy patent....

Stats:
5 feet 10
size UK 16 (in M&S anyway)
weigh 190 lbs (13 stone 8lbs apparently)
carry my weight on my thighs and my hips
38 years old

I am similar to you and have given up wearing them so following here for inspiration. I also carry my weight in the same place as you.

I don’t know, how does an overweight woman wear brogues?

PoliteSquid · 23/01/2026 15:11

I’m 5’7 weigh a bit more than you and carry all my weight in the middle. I wear brogues a lot but with midi dresses rather than trousers. I’m not young or cool, but I do like how my brogues look!
edited to say - mine are all Hamble Oaks too!

LaurieFairyCake · 23/01/2026 15:11

I’m not sure my idea of ‘feminine’ is yours but if I wanted to look more feminine I’d focus on the top half. Yes to trousers and same colour as trousers socks on the bottom half with the clumpy brogues.

but NO to shirts on the top half, instead silk blouses, pretty patterns, fluffy jumpers, ruffles etc.

Loopylalalou · 23/01/2026 15:21

I have to wear flat shoes due to a major ankle repair, now worsened by arthritis, even being forced in Skechers on a bad day.
I always wear dresses, except when gardening/DIY, and just get in with it. IT took me a while to not feel an oddity but really, NO-ONE notices, and if they do, is it really important? I’d say no, in the real scheme of life.

MadameBethune · 23/01/2026 15:27

I love brogues.

I think the answer is be careful about the skirt length, or wear wide legged / barrel leg trousers with a neater top.

The fatal length is just on or just below the knee, that gives Ms Trunchbull vibes.

Pencil skirt above the knee with a long loose jumper if you don't want a tucked in look?
Midi length skirt as above, anywhere down to just above the ankle.

This dress would look wonderful with brogues:

As you are tall, this dress would also look good because it will not fall below your knee:

Wide or barrel leg trousers also excellent with brogues, but the top needs to be more fitted to balance them (or wear an untucked shirt with a neater shorter jumper).

HermitCrabby · 23/01/2026 15:27

As you are tall, perhaps something like these culottes? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cropped-Trousers-Culottes-Elasticated-Lightweight/dp/B0FHVLCSPF/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.SEzY0kydGylNwidiwHCB9dXXQgYyBKivYD_9Iw-fru3dc6BmcS2FAuLPAveEebN7CgedxhP-8DtMPibZQ4IdxaRZ7Fc2868hkoxyiB1jdHqZtfSWvwFOCvA3qzfLJZMK5cYtVr-GcCofpq2Vpp7rCx5V5AiD_jMjjyNhYqKL_CqkY70-BvkeJdSCz7MQmkB_5APHl0q_-Ja-OSFqPqQDkmrtUq32YAOY99E4vJHY0dRN-orVF3FrYP99RcOS2sZ7y8gGPosO5-USp2IiP8PFsN1-MsrAA9F0l3Rxg7XAjWQ.-KNvxCtu2JOsPrzAABM4eZY0WSUYDqfMEfoyqnQRq2U&dib_tag=se&keywords=Lady%27s%2BCulottes&qid=1769181296&sr=8-6&th=1&psc=1 I think you could wear ankle socks with these, which I always prefer with lace-ups; tights never seem to fill in the gaps adequately.
Or full on Oxford Bags, which would be appropriate with brogues.

i am very short and mostly wear mine with tailored trousers that sit on the shoe, or sometimes with a fitted shirt dress.

I always enjoy my brogues, even when they aren’t the most flattering shoe to wear. So maybe you should just stick them on with whatever and take pleasure in looking at your feet!

I am a larger woman (size 22) and all I can say is I wear whatever shoes are comfortable.
Who cares what brand they are or if they are “fashionable” or conform to so-called “feminine” ideals.

Mind you, I’m probably older than you so have reached the age of don’t give a fuck.

Silverbirchleaf · 23/01/2026 15:29

On their feet!!

henlake7 · 23/01/2026 15:39

Sure, very pretty skinny 20 yr olds look feminine in them.....the rest of us look like Miss Trunchbull!😆

I love mine though, either with dresses or trousers coz sometimes I just really want to stomp around!😎

dudsville · 23/01/2026 15:42

What's the thing that doesn't look right to you about wearing them?

whymadam · 23/01/2026 15:44

Have a look at Rosablue, Kit and Kaboodal, and Gudrun Sjorden. Enjoy your fab brogues!

Good for you and everything but op is posting on the Style and Beauty board not the IDGAF About Fashion board

Op I suggest wide trousers and a fitted top. Keep them muted and the brogues will be highlighted even if slightly covered by your trousers

I agree that the current brogues with knee length skirt look is very much a 20-something one as anyone else tips quickly into 'aged librarian'

Pollyanna87 · 23/01/2026 16:13

At your height and size you probably don’t look that big. I think they would be nice with (very slightly cropped) jeans.

You're barely overweight surely?

I love brogues and that style shoe, wear them with tapered trousers, they'll look very good on you because you're pear shaped by the sounds of it

I have cankles so am very disappointed that I dont have a nice ankle, but I still wear stuff like this

bigboykitty · 23/01/2026 16:21

Also a member of the Hamble Oak club. I just wear them with jeans, trousers, skirts and dresses.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/01/2026 16:32

I wear Hamble Oaks with dresses. Wouldn’t with trousers.

CurlewKate · 23/01/2026 16:42

On her feet?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 23/01/2026 16:46

I'm sorry but I don't think brogues are at all feminine, so I wouldn't worry too much about what you would pair them with.

YYYDlilah · 23/01/2026 16:53

How have you reached the age of 38 without knowing how to wear brogues when you have a cupboard full of them?

labalap · 23/01/2026 17:01

Honestly I think that brogues are just not very feminine. They go well with a gamine look - hence the young skinny models are probably going to carry them off well.

The problem is that it's hard to be gamine if you're not young and skinny. For some reason, it seems to turn into a butch look instead. Which can still look stylish, but doesn't sound like what you're going for.

This has me scratching my head too.

So I assume OP that you have had your various brogues for a while. And it’s the weight that’s new?

What did you used to wear them with?

Do that.

LowdermilkPark · 23/01/2026 18:25

Brogues and feminine are not bedfellows.

I’d wear wide legged trousers and a not too baggy top.
