How does an overweight woman wear brogues?

MindYourUsage · 23/01/2026 14:53

How, HOW I ask you....

do I wear brogues as an overweight woman? And still look feminine? I carry all my weight on my thighs and hips if that makes any difference.

Please don't say "wear jumper dresses" - they cling in all the wrong bloody places and make me look like a sack of spuds, or they don't and make me look like an empty shapeless sack awaiting said spuds.

I've googled how to style these, and am just bamboozled with pictures of very pretty skinny 20 year olds in them, prancing about in skinny ankle tapered trousers. 🙃to be fair I used to look like them at that age too....

I have a cupboard full of lovely hamble oaks in all different colours... tan, black, cream/pink, dark green, navy patent....

Stats:
5 feet 10
size UK 16 (in M&S anyway)
weigh 190 lbs (13 stone 8lbs apparently)
carry my weight on my thighs and my hips
38 years old

This is my styling as a fat lady in her 50s. I have a pair of doc shoes on here not brouges but close, I have a white stuff jumper dress and a tweed jacket from boden. Both purchased from charity shops, snag footless tights ... I don't care about being fashion able or dressing for my age or for anyone but myself these days. I wear things that I like the feel of, that are good quality fabrics and will last. I buy second hand as much as possible. I am size 16-20 depending on the item and 5'8"

You should style yourself however the hell you want to OP!

They're just shoes. And your body is a pretty normal sized body. Wear whatever the fuck you want and stop giving so much airtime to the idea that you need to be thin or feminine to enjoy wearing things you like.

bigboykitty · 23/01/2026 18:37

I just want to say that there are some women, myself included, whose main motivation when choosing clothes and getting dressed, is not 'will I look feminine?'

I am a larger woman (size 22) and all I can say is I wear whatever shoes are comfortable.
Who cares what brand they are or if they are “fashionable” or conform to so-called “feminine” ideals.

Mind you, I’m probably older than you so have reached the age of don’t give a fuck.

I thought for a minute I’d written this!

me too, I no longer give a fuck, as long as I’m comfortable and don’t look like a bag lady why would anyone think they should have an opinion on my ‘style’?

im 65 and have long hair too 😱

Good for you?

I don't wear brogues, but that's also not relevant to the op's question.

The op asked for styling advice, specifically about how to style brogues in a feminine way. Hopefully she received some useful advice before people decided her question isn't a valid one.

This. Is. Style. And. Beauty.

Do you also go onto posts on The Doghouse and tell them that dogs smell and you'd never get one in a million years?

YYYDlilah · 23/01/2026 19:13

My main consideration with shoes is do I like wearing them, are they comfortable and do they look ok with my outfit.

I don't wear brogues because I don't like broguing, but I wear derbys and 'DM' shoes. I wear them with opaque tights, a skirt (e.g. midi or short kilt) or a divided skirt, and a jumper or crew neck buttoned up cardigan, or with a dress (not knitted).

Sorry. My bad. I'd forgotten and was bemused by all the posts saying 'but that's not feminine'.

T1mesAreHardForDreamers · 23/01/2026 19:17

My stats were very similar to you in the 2010's where brogues for us were peak fashion!

I still to this day love skater style, fit and flair dresses, or a skater skirt with a cute shirt or blouse, tights and brogues 😍

Also looks nice with a vintage-y wrap dress, bonus points if it is patterned or has some lace detail.

Quite short fit and flair skirts with a nipped in waist and wrap dresses are things I find really flattering as a bottom heavy hourglass.

It's also a very feminine look.

YYYDlilah · 23/01/2026 19:18

@Legomania , I. Hate. Sentences. Being. Split. Up. Like. This.

Allseeingallknowing · 23/01/2026 19:19

Brogues make me think of Miss Trunchball!

LookingThroughGlass · 23/01/2026 19:22

Opaque tights and skirt no longer than knee length so it doesn't 'cut your legs off' at the calf and make them look hefty. I can't help with skirt style as I'm an apple.

justasking111 · 23/01/2026 21:00

With arthritis I wear them with trousers in the winter. They're easier to walk in and keep my feet warm I find. Never worn them with dresses preference being a daintier flat.

I do miss 👠 though

Merryhobnobs · 23/01/2026 21:22

I am the same height and slightly larger than you. I have lovely blue patent brogues that I wear with skirts (many white stuff), slightly a- line just above the knee. I have back issues so can't wear heels. I do think it is about the print and accessories being a bit more feminine. I love a fake collar (see collar collection) to make jumpers have a bit more to them. Scarves & necklaces can really add to outfits. Although I am a librarian and prob do dress quite librarian-esque but I am happy!

Gettingbysomehow · 23/01/2026 21:24

I don't like these shoes at all. They are not feminine, they are very mannish and scream Mrs Trunchbull. If I saw them coming at me Id leg it.

Overtheatlantic · 23/01/2026 21:33

I think you should consider a 1930s silhouette with wide leg trousers and a fitted jumper. It’s feminine but in a different way, like feminine academic.

Can we please give Mrs Trunchbull references a rest?

AlexFurbison · 23/01/2026 22:21

I wear my (silver) brogues with wide leg trousers and a fitted jumper as above. I’m tallish and a curvy size 14. I feel it’s feminine in a vintage ‘tailored’ way and the shoes get lots of compliments.

Nonono18 · 23/01/2026 22:25

Jeans, or if more chunky dr marten style I’d wear with thick black tights and slightly a line skirt/leather skirt and jumper

Craftycorvid · 23/01/2026 22:33

You put one shoe on each foot, lace them up and enjoy having dapper and comfortable strolls.

soupyspoon · 23/01/2026 22:41

I have a pair of brogue ankle boots from Embassy. Bought them for the side zipper as well as the looks. They're lovely designs and too tempting by half.

CactusSwoonedEnding · 23/01/2026 23:31

I'm overweight and I love my brogues. I think I look good in them. I wear them with wide leg trousers or jeans. I got rid of all my high heels when I got plantar faciitis - thankfully now gone after years of flat shoes. I wouldn't wear them with a skirt, but I hate wearing skirts. If for some reason I had to wear a skirt I would then wear purple DM boots rather than brogues.

Missstified · 23/01/2026 23:58

googles 'What are brogues....'

YYYDlilah · 24/01/2026 00:33

@Missstified , flat or flattish shoes with a punched our pattern (which is called broguing). Examples are: Womens Havisham Oak Black Leather Brogues, Lace Up Shoes | Clarks UK
or Tabac Polished Fumè Oxford Brogue | Church's

The term sometimes is used to describe any flat lace-up by feckwits.

mellicauli · 24/01/2026 00:36

Can you go one colour? Straight legged chinos in same colour as shoes, jumper / blouse in same colour. Or tights and plain dress all the same colour.

Possibly contrasting belt & bag.. Some nice jewellery?
