M&S sizing

I can’t decide if I’m just unwilling to admit that I’ve put on more weight/shape changed or if M&S sizing has gone awry.

I used to be a size 6-8 in M&S, regular length trousers. I’m 5’4”. Over the past couple of days I’ve tried on black trousers ++ in M&S and have needed to try on size 10 short in some styles to get anything near sensible looking and comfortable on me. I have size
6 regular jeans I bought from there a year ago which still fit and a pair of trousers in an 8 in one colour which when I tried them on in black were far too long and a bit tight on the waist.

i did put in a couple of pounds over Xmas but I haven’t shrunk that I’ve otherwise noticed!

Is this just me?

It's not you, their sizing is all over the place. I have two pairs of jeans from them in an 8 and a pair of joggers in a 12. Tops vary between 8 and 10. One of the pairs of jeans I bought in a different colour, also size 8, and couldn't even fasten them, the lengths were wildly varying too.

They come up very small and Ive bought two pairs of trousers in regular length. One is an ankle flapper and the other is three inches too long.

Bananajam · 22/01/2026 20:56

I have a pair of wide leg joggers size 6 and another, size 10, both of which fit comfortably. I bought a pair of wide leg trousers in a size 10 that were too small. I gave up ordering online and only buy in store now after trying the item on!

I’ve found the sizing fairly realistic but the some of their trousers are extremely long recently- I’m 5’4” too and usually take a regular but now usually need a short

I’ve found it very good, I’ve gone from a size 18 to a size 12 and they fit me perfectly everytime

Good luck in finding short in m&s!

Yes, their sizing used to run big but now everything seems very small. Their Medium tights cut off my circulation and pinch my feet.

I looked up their trousers size guide in November and subsequently ordered a pair of size 8 trousers in Regular.

They arrived and theyre tiny (24" waist) and ludicrously short (I'm 5 ft 5 1/2) - flapping above my ankles.

From one extreme to another!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 22/01/2026 21:20

M&s clothes are enormous. Vanity sizing.

Abra1t · 22/01/2026 21:22

I always found them very generous but a sparkly long-sleeved tshirt bought before Christmas was definitely on the small side.

Cyclingmummy1 · 22/01/2026 21:34

I find the waist/hips are fine but most are too short. And their bought in brands are worse!

Wickedlittledancer · 22/01/2026 21:49

I find they size big too.

cotswoldsgal1234 · 22/01/2026 21:54

Interesting. In Me&Em, Hobbs and Reiss I am a 10. But a 10 in M&S is slightly too small.

Ikeameatballs · 22/01/2026 22:08

I used to think they sized big, always needed a 6, but still buying 6-8 in other shops and how think their clothes are small. Only top I’ve tried on recently was XS and did fit fine but just didn’t suit me/sleeves not quite right rather than being the wrong size.

I think I’m going to have to do what I did today and just try on heaps in store but that does annoy me/makes me less likely to buy.

I’ve had the same experience as you OP, until recently I always had to size down in trousers and jeans at M&S. But I ordered a couple of things after Christmas and had to swap for size up (aka my usual size) and in one case that’s bordering on snug.
on the other hand I tried on a shirt in my normal size and it was huge, had I bought it I would have had to size down again.

suki1964 · 22/01/2026 22:14

Black Jeans are always smaller then blue jeans - the dye proccess

I find Im size 8 in jeans across the board - no matter which brand, but length varies . 8 petite in M&S yet regular in TU and Tesco

LavenderBlue19 · 22/01/2026 22:21

Definitely smaller in trousers - I find the waist particularly small, even when the hips and legs are loose. I first noticed it last spring/summer.

MeMyselfNDI · 22/01/2026 22:22

Iv noticed exactly the same.

im the same size and height as you. Their smaller sizes used to swamp me now I couldn’t fit a 6 and the 8s feel snug! I’m still a 6-8 everywhere else so I think it’s them!
