Epilator reccomendations

MightyGoldBear · 22/01/2026 16:53

Before shelling out for laser hair removal I thought I'd try epilating.
Any recommendations? Anyone have the braun Silk 9 flex any good?

Thanks

I got the Braun silk epil 9 about 6 months ago and am happy with it. It epilates, has a shaver and an exfoliating brush thing too. Don’t need to shave my legs as often. It does still a little but I think you get used to it. Can also use it in the shower and I like that it’s cordless, it replaced a corded one from the early naughties of I remember correctly.

They’re expensive tho, I used Boots points when it was on offer

I have the braun one too, it’s great!

warning - I had a cheap one before which had dodgy electrics, in the middle of the night it started going off completely randomly and then caught fire, luckily it had woken me and I threw it out the window into the paddling pool in the lawn below but was scary…

CatsMiaow · 22/01/2026 17:34

I like a Phillips Satinelle

JudgementalCat · 22/01/2026 18:08

I've always had a cheap epilator from Amazon - are the branded ones better? Do they get all the hairs first time?

EverythingIsComputer · 23/01/2026 14:07

@JudgementalCati think @samlovesdilys‘s experience illustrates why I tend to go for named brands over Amazon electronics, I don’t trust them and think people like Braun and Philips are leaders in these products for a reason. I find with my Braun I might need to go over an area a couple of times but I don’t find that a problem.

samlovesdilys · 24/01/2026 21:03

@EverythingIsComputer Absolutely my fault for buying the cheap option, I was just very glad it happened during the night when I was there!

Thank you everyone,
I went for the braun silk 9 flex in the end. So far I'm liking it. Yet to brave the armpits or bikini area yet 🙈

Armpits are ok, bikini line v different!! I find if I have trimmed a bit so it too long hair it helps…

Is epilating on a parr , painwise, with waxing? And can you do your bikini area with it?

Twinkletwinkly · 27/01/2026 10:21

I’ve never had an epilator. Are they good for facial hair or is there likelihood of redness? I’m fed up up plucking hairs from my chin and jawline every few days partly because I struggle to see them and partly because I’m struggling to grip the tweezers due to arthritic fingers. I sound like a real catch 😆

Haha, me too twinkle 😉

BellaTrixLeStrange1 · 27/01/2026 11:37

In my personal experience there isn’t a epilator on the planet that doesn’t cause excruciating pain, but maybe I’m doing it wrong or a bit of a wimp! 😂

Hoolahoophop · 27/01/2026 11:39

I started using an epilator on my arm pits about 20 years ago. The hair has given up now and I might find a stray about 4 times a year but that's it. I'm hair free now!

My Braun came with a face epilator for doing rouge hairs and it said shaping brows but I wouldn't risk it on detail!

raspberrycordial · 27/01/2026 11:40

I have used on facial hair, it’s good. When I was younger it sometimes caused spots afterwards but I prevented this by leaving sudocrem on for a while after-also stops the redness. I’m also a massive catch 😉

Thanks for the tip. I might invest in one. I think I was also a bit concerned it might encourage more growth on my face and I’d end up a bearded lady 🧔‍♀️

Also the Braun one - I do my bikini line and after the first couple of times it doesn’t hurt much

MO0N · 27/01/2026 12:34

I have a Braun one and I've been happy with it, the downside is it can lead to in growing hairs. On the upside it seems that pulling hairs out by the root damages the hair follicle and over time it can stop growing at all, at least that's how it seems to me.

MargoLivebetter · 27/01/2026 12:34

I've had my Braun one for over 20 years and it is still working really well. Fantastic thing! I've found that it is best to do it on stubble that is just long enough to rip out. It hurts more when the hair is longer.

Slightly more painful than waxing. Weirdly I can wax my armpits and pretty much full minge with no issues.. but my legs I can’t bloody bare 🤣
