Barrel jeans - length?

I've ordered two pairs of barrel jeans from M&S - one in regular length, one short. I'm 5' 6.5". The regulars rest just on top of my shoes. Shorts are just at/ above my ankle bone. Which length is more appropriate/ better for this style??

I like mine 7/8ths length so I’d go for the short if it was me!

I’d go for the short too. I have these jeans and like them a bit above the ankle.

mynameiscalypso · 21/01/2026 18:15

I’m exactly the same height and I prefer the regular length on me - I found the short too short when I sit down.

I like them them right on the ankle bone so neither of those would be quite right for me - sorry. I'm very fussy though!

I have a Hush pair that sit on my ankle bone, but they look better with ballet flats or sandals, so fine for spring & summer. My uniqlo barrel trousers can be worn with trainers and therefore I wear them more in the autumn & winter months.

Like with most trousers/jeans, it depends on what shoes you wear with them.

FlappicusSmith · 21/01/2026 22:19

Yes, I fear you're right @Floisme - I think the short are too short and the regular are too long :(

I'm the same height and tried the same jeans on in the same lengths. I went with the short version because I thought it looked better with jeans, but they are just too short when I'm walking and sitting down.

I think short are too short sadly, they feel awkward to me when seated. I find barrel hard to get right even though I like them!

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2026 23:26

I have two pairs and both sit just on the ankle bone which feels right to me.

FlappicusSmith · 21/01/2026 23:27

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one vexed by this issue! It's weird how hard they are to get right on the length.

I really thought I didn't like them 'full' length, but then I saw someone wearing a full length pair when I was out this evening and thought they looked great although they were about 35 years younger than me!

Yes I think you're right @DramaAlpaca - I have another pair of gentle barrel-shaped jeans from Next that sit at my ankle bone and I never had any doubts about those (although they aren't great jeans as they've gone baggy at the knee and generally stretched out a lot, so they're really just for wearing around the house now). These M&S ones I think aren't quite right in either length. Shame, as I like the colour (and the price!)
