I'm in the market for a new dressing gown. Any recommendations? I dont have a specific budget in mind, just want something really lovely to replace my current one (John Lewis) which has seen better days. Thanks!

I'd buy one of these if money was no object:

Oh these are so beautiful!! I have a lightweight cotton one with a similar pattern that I got from toast in the sale, that I feel like a movie star in the summer going out for a morning cuppa in the garden. Love the length of these ones though, mine is knee length.

Toast dressing gowns are the best. Cotton, long and beautifully designed. Great quality. Rewardingly expensive.

There's definitely a gap in the market for simple, darker colours, good quality fabric - not fluffy, not frilly, not baby coloured anything and below the knee.

If you have a sewing machine, Merchant & Mills have a pattern called Sunday for a really nice plain dressing gown. I’ve made two for myself now and make them for other people as gifts. Far better quality for the price (pattern is about £15 plus whatever you want to spend on material, or you could repurpose an old duvet cover/ blanket etc) than anything you can buy in the shops and you can choose your material and have the hem and sleeves at a length that suits/fits you.

Another fan of the bathrobe company here.

I’ve got one from Their Nibs which I love. It’s a sort of heavy velvet, lined in striped cotton. Lovely in winter.

I'm intrigued about the lure of a dressing gown. I should be someone who wears one because I love cosy PJs. I also have to have a blanket around me when sitting on sofa, even in summer, but I've never really got into the habit. It's the idea of the opening at the front I don't like, sounds a bit silly I know. Does anyone else not get the whole dressing gown thing? It's a bit like pizza, in theory I should like it, like bread/ carbs/cheese/topping/sandwiches/slices of things you can eat with your hand, but not fussed on pizza.
A shame really, as sitting eating pizza in a dressing gown should really be right up my street!

That's a lovely idea but there is no chance of me running up a dressing gown!

I have an old M&S one which I love - soft and velvety, silvery grey, almost ankle length. It's seen slightly better days but I can't find anything as nice to replace it so I'm holding on and hoping it doesn't competely fall apart.
Chelsea Peers sometimes have longer ones which look quite nice. M&S and JL had some longer ones but they were too fluffy and chunky for my liking.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/01/2026 19:54

Oh the Bonsoir ones are beautiful aren't they. I can't visualise unloading the dishwasher in one somehow, quite apart from the cleaning bill if I got a bit of egg down the front. The velvet Toast one is also lush but again dry clean only Sad

I love kantha robes from Etsy. I have a couple including this with the green lining (though from a different seller I can't immediately track down).

Mine is from M&S, must be 10 years old! I love it. It’s worn really well and is still soft and snuggly. I bought dd17 an M&S one at Christmas and it’s just not the same quality.

Not a dressing gown exactly but it’s a great buy and worn more than my actual dressing gown! A pyjama fleece 1/4 zip top, may be called other things but it’s a hip length, soft dressing gown material. Sort of like an oodie but shorter and without the hood

I have a Shibumi one - very light, but very warm, and very long! I love it.

WelshBlanket · 19/01/2026 23:40

I also have a Shibumi one which I treated myself to in lockdown. I second the light, warm and long!

A gentle wash and it comes up fine. It does need regular de-bobbling though. And lacks pockets and belt loops.

But I put up with that for the absolutely gorgeous colours and the reversibleness (is that a word??). I wear the paler side out in summer and the deeper shades in winter.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 20/01/2026 10:09

Hmmmm, mine has belt loops. Maybe it doesn't have them on the reversible side?

Mine is a bit big now really. I am hoping Vinted might serve me a VGC pre-loved one at some point, as I'm not sure I can steel myself to buy a second one at the new price.😆

Interesting! Mine doesn't have belt loops on either side. I've been meaning for years to stitch some fine cord or ribbon on but of course it's one of those eleventy million jobs that doesn't get done.

I've got a red/green combo and I'm very tempted by the lilac/blue one but similarly don't think I can justify the expense!
