Hair ideas for peri shedding hair and sticky out ears. Photo included

My hair was naturally ginger/ red but now faded. I’m having it cut soon and fancy a change. It’s thinning severely on top. Thanks to peri for another kick in the teeth. Here’s the kicker though. My ears stick out a lot. So cuts such as a sleek bob don’t really work as my ears kick out the hair. What on earth can I do with it. I feel scruffy and also wary that it’s very thin up top.

Would you consider a shag? I have fine, thinning hair, with a wave to it (looks like perhaps you might have at the bottom?) and a heavily layered shag makes it look a lot thicker.

Gwendolene · 17/01/2026 20:12

I’d love a shag (snigger). Have you any pics of one you think might work on this or are you happy to share one ?

And it’s not really wavy but holds a kink and kicks out a bit if I put the front up and let it back out - this is what you’re seeing here

A wolfie cut is what my hairdresser does for me and I can tuck it behind my ears.

Gwendolene · 17/01/2026 21:10

Is it better to own my ears and tuck then? It just looks so shapeless right now but a sharp bob would have my ears poking through not also there’s no volume on my crown so is bottom heavy

Any more advice before I go ask for something ? Please 🙏

Exactly youneed lots of layers, mine almost, just almost verges on mullet territory but not quite

Thats what has given me volume on the crown

Plus lots of thickening shampoos and products

My hair is similar. Thinning at the top and thick at the bottom. Similar colour too. For a few years I've been giving myself a butterfly cut. It usually looks OK, but I'm still very conscious about the hairline thinning.

I have quite a large forehead and haven't had a fringe for years but I was wondering if a fringe might help. Although I'm worried that it might stick out in a weird direction.

I'm watching with interest to see what ideas people suggest for you.

I've always had fine hair but it used to be long and in great condition. Now, after men
Opalopause and severe illness I lost most of it. All the long strands fell outl . I visited the hairdresser a few weeks ago after over two years and now have a fringe and it's straight at the bottom all one length and coloured with no pops. ( I assume that means patches of bright dye?)

No idea what you would call it. I also now wear hearing aids behind my sticky out ears to complete my look. Never heard of a shag. Made me giggle. And I thought mullet cuts went out in the 70s! Bay City Rollers and Showaddywaddy!

Look up what to eat to help benefit your hair - I would invest in that rather than 'products.' Foods rich in zinc are supposed to be good so lots of red meat, avocados and spinach ( and oysters) for you. Dietary changes are definitely helping my hair.

Leaving in the autocorrect as I rather like it.

A Wolfie cut! Who knew?

trainedopossum · 18/01/2026 21:16

Idk if you’d consider minoxidil but I’ve been using it on my greying and thinning temples and it’s worked wonders.

Well what I actually asked for initially was to have something like Suzi Quatro all those years ago but apparently this is what they call it now

Words · 18/01/2026 21:26

God mine used to be like that back in the day! I also had a bit of a crush onSQ.

Gwendolene · 19/01/2026 22:27

I am taking minoxidil but aside from having a cruelly untrue dream where I had loads of new growth, not seen results yet! It’s so awful right now. The ends are just fat and shapeless. Like my peri figure ! The gift that keeps on giving

No haircut suggestions but may I suggest Plantur 39 shampoo and pumpkin seed and saw palmetto capsules. It has helped my hair no end

Reportingfromwherever · 19/01/2026 22:54

Another one with a terribly thinking crown here. I’ve had always had incredibly thick hair and it’s so thin now I find it really upsetting.

Where are you getting minoxidil from? Are there any side effects?

Gwendolene · 21/01/2026 18:21

@Reportingfromwhereverhair and me. Also got the pumpkin seed capsules but not seen a difference yet. Probably as not taken many. I dreadful for taking supplements!
