Ive been cooing over these cardigans for years, and I just saw it on Traitors and as Ive done quite well with work recently Im seriously considering buying one as a well done to myself. Am I mad? I want the colourful one, but its over £400!!!! Ive never spent that on anything before. I do know I would wear it to death, and it would make me crazy happy. I have a ratty old brown cardigan that I wear constantly. So should I go for it, or is that totally bonkers? Anyone got one? The fact you cant wash them might be an issue cos I know I would wear it constantly and Im a glumsy git.

Thoughts?

Oh and here is the beauty. I mean its a work of art and so cheery. The Colourful Colossal Knit Cardigan | Hope Macaulay

I also love the browner colours which would go with more Bruna Colossal Knit Cardigan | Hope Macaulay

I also wouldn't know what size to get. Im a size 10/12 tall with big boobs. I really want that oversize look so Im guessing M/L. Id want it a bigger fit than on the model. They are made to order so don't want to fuck it up.

It's so annoying how even expensive clothes don't last these days. Puts me off buying anything expensive, tbh.

I have a New Look cardie ( yes I know, I know) that has lasted three years and several washes!

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 05/03/2026 21:05

I’m really sorry that you have been disappointed, OP, but this is inevitable with roving yarn. It will pill, and then it will felt, and this is unavoidable.

Nara2k · 05/03/2026 23:11

I'm so sorry to hear that, I really love the company story and wanted to be wrong, but the way the fibre is used it just wasn't going to last. I wouldn't bother with the comb if I were you.
ETA thanks for updating

PhaedraWas · 05/03/2026 23:32

I'm so sorry to hear this. From what the women in the video were saying combing might make it more fragile. Is it really as bad as you think? Could you post a pic?

TheChosenTwo · 06/03/2026 07:43

Such a shame, they do look like they won’t last at all but it’s horrible when you’ve treated yourself to something more extravagant than you usually would only to find it’s very quickly
ruined just by wearing it 😭
I remember seeing it worn in the traitors and you could see all the loose weave flyaways on the shoulders and I thought that they were probably something you could get away with wearing for a few photos before taking it back off again. Very impractical.
Sorry op 🥴

amibeingaknob · 06/03/2026 07:52

Thats exactly it. I wanted to wear it constantly cos its so gorgeous and the cost. But its a 'wear for an hour and pose then put it away' type item. Which is not me at all. I also feel quite minging and scruffy in it now cos it looks like the dogs slept on it. Ah well, you live and learn.

Can you post a close up photo of what the wool has done?

I assume it's well beyond a fuzz roller and de-bobbler gadget isn't it.

EasternStandard · 06/03/2026 12:03

As pp could you put up a close up of the wool?

I don't know whether this is any help, but you know you could knock that up in an afternoon with some super chunky yarn and big pins, right? I'm not trying to be facetious, you really could Smile

Just what I was thinking!

I can't see £400 in that but, OP, if you're not a knitter, you can afford it and you know you would wear it, go for it.

I must admit though, that if I had a spare £400, I wouldn't spend it on that cardigan.

UPDATE!

Im so so disappointed. Ive had so many compliments when I wear it which is lovely. Like literally stopped in the street or restaurant and people coo and ask me loads of questions so Im basking in the glow of that attention. HOWEVER, ive worn it several times in past few weeks and it looks ratty as hell now. The piling (is that the word) is shocking. Its like im moulting over everything and everyone and its like ive got a cat when I dont. I did complain about it actually and they just said i have to buy some fancy comb from them.

So yeh, I can't believe this is quite how its supposed to look after just a couple of weeks, so the knitters up thread who warned me of this weren't wrong.

I would send it back. Especially at that price!

Ohh no! Please get in touch with them!

Whowhatwerewolf · 06/03/2026 13:20

I would absolutely demand a refund and wouldn't back down until I had received one. They are knowingly selling garments that aren't fit for purpose and it's not acceptable that you've been thoroughly ripped off.

youbizarrehorse · 06/03/2026 14:03

As a knitter, I would love to see a photo of what it looks like now. Just out of sheer interest. I’m so sorry though. That’s a huge pile of money for a very pretty item that didn’t last more than a few weeks.

Funny enough,I was just looking at cardigan patterns using super chunky yarn this morning. Not roving though. Gutted for you🙁

Denbyregency · 06/03/2026 14:11

I had a suspicion it would do this. I’m so sorry op.

amibeingaknob · 06/03/2026 16:23

I will upload a pic soon as im out. Not in the cardigan because it felt too scruffy now - already!!!

Yeh I complained already and I got a load of tosh about how its a natural product and its to be expected and if only I purchased they amazing comb things would be well. Basically im unreasonable. They aren't going to budge. Grrrr....

Its gone past the piling to the felting stage. Ugh. Quite miffed.

Wha a pity op. It looked fab when new. Someone on here recommended kiwi & co so I bought a couple of cheap knock offs which I rather like. Not nearly so heartbreaking when they fall apart. Sorry to read your update 😭

Kangarude · 06/03/2026 16:47

Oh no. I’d been watching this thread and could feel your excitement and the joy when it arrived. How sad that it has ruined so quickly.

Whowhatwerewolf · 07/03/2026 15:35

Please don't roll over so quickly on this. You really don't have to let them get away with this.

As the cardigan has pilled and felted after only a few wears and the company is refusing responsibility, you should escalate it rather than accepting their answer.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be of satisfactory quality and reasonably durable. A cardigan at that price should not deteriorate after a handful of wears in normal use. This becomes a faulty goods issue rather than just a return.

I would reply to them and say clearly that you are making a complaint under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 because the item is not of satisfactory quality or durability. Attach photos of the felting and pulling and ask again for a refund. As the purchase was within the last six months, the law assumes the fault was present at the time of sale unless the retailer can prove otherwise.

If they still refuse, tell them you will pursue the matter through your payment provider.

If you paid by credit card and because the cardigan cost over £100, you can make a Section 75 claim with the card provider. If you paid by debit card or PayPal, you can request a chargeback or open a dispute. Provide the bank with photos and copies of the emails showing that the retailer has refused to resolve the problem.

Banks are generally quite receptive where clothing deteriorates almost immediately. Often once a retailer realises you are willing to escalate formally, they reconsider.

MabelMoo23 · 07/03/2026 16:10

I’ve been following your thread and I can’t believe you’ve had it less than a month and it already looks rubbish - absolutely gutted for you. Definitely complain

If it needs the comb, surely they should supply it?

GellerYeller · 07/03/2026 16:23

I agree that you should pursue the chargeback. It feels so unfair that they’ve basically engineered some product placement on The Traitors, resulting in gaining customers going outside their usual budget. As a one off treat. The item isn’t durable for a reasonable length of time so it’s not fit for purpose. Refund is due. Good luck 💐

I sent them an email based on what you've said here. God I hope you are right because it would be awesome. They must be inundated by complaints like this surely. How are they getting away with it?
