Hey I'm after some advice on what to wear for a first date in a long time.

It's only for a country walk and then to the pub for a drink.

I was thinking a nice oversized jumper with a pair of white skinny jeans and my
red hunter wellies.

You need to be honest to you and who you are to feel comfortable and confident.

whats your lifestyle and where do you live?
white skinny jeans and red hunters are not a “country walk” look. TBH I’d say that’s quite a dated look even for a towny.

Big jumper- yes. Big cosy coat- yes. Lovely winter or proper walking boots - yes. Trousers difficult to say kit knowing your age/shape/soze: I’m thinking cord barrel or straight.

RedheadGemm · 08/01/2026 12:42

I'm 39 and 5ft6 and a size 10.

Shows how out of touch I am, so you think they're dated wearing wellies?

White skinny jeans - for a country walk?

That would be an individual choice. White would be frankly silly for cold muddy winter weather in the countryside. Skinny jeans are currently unfashionable. Red wellies might be seen as a little gauche. (Not saying you should never wear them but they’d be an odd choice for a date. And of course, if your date is going to fall madly in love at first sight your clothes won’t matter.)

However, why not take a look at some websites - maybe:

https://www.massimodutti.com/gb/women/new-in-n1474

and

https://www.stories.com/en-gb/newin/

and

https://www.cos.com/en-gb/women/new-arrivals

to get an idea of up to date styling?

Not because you need to dress up for a first date, but so you can have things in your wardrobe for every eventuality in your dating future.

You can wear wellies if you want, make sure they have proper grip, just not red or hunters. Skinny jeans been out of fashion for a year or so, white jeans are for summer.
DO wear a hat

MsOtisReflects · 08/01/2026 14:01

Well … I definitely wouldn’t wear those boots, either!

Tortephant · 08/01/2026 14:01

M&S will give you a good feel for current styles and shapes - they have such a huge collection it should help you get an idea of what will work for you and then you can set about finding something appropriate. https://www.marksandspencer.com/l/women/trousers

or Jeans:

white skinny jeans + red wellies screams: I never go on country walks.
So maybe that is a good idea on your part if you're not really into country walks. But your (favourite?) white jeans might never recover ...

Everything else sounds ok: warm jumper + boots (even red wellies - they sound cute tbh) and coat/hat. I wouldn't buy anything new to wear on a (muddy) country walk.

If skinny jeans/cords suit you, that's fine; I think men only notice if the jeans flatter you, not what 'shape' they are.

FlappicusSmith · 08/01/2026 15:30

What sort of 'country' walk? As in a proper one, across muddy fields/ hills? Or a gentle one along paved paths? If it's going to be muddy or slippery you need proper boots or at least trail runners.

And then I'd probably wear my fave M&S boyfriend cut jeans, that I roll up slightly at the ankle. Nice jumper (cashmere round neck in a plain colour or fairisle, or a chunkier knit) with a decent fitted long-sleeved t-shirt or Arket merino top underneath in a colour that suits for when you get to the pub.

Coat would depend on type of walk and weather!

RedheadGemma · 08/01/2026 17:20

I'm back, I messed up my login.

When I say a country walk its more walk round a country park then to the pub, not a 5 mile hike etc.

He's not a big walker but it was his suggestion

RedheadGemma · 08/01/2026 17:26

Thank you everyone for the advice by the way

In that case, don't wear wellies (if it's paved/ gravel etc paths) as that will look a bit ott. Especially red ones! I wouldn't wear white jeans either (in winter).

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 08/01/2026 17:36

Not whites jeans in winter and in the country. If he’s into his hiking that might out him off 😂

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/01/2026 17:46

It sounds like an outfit for Instagram rather than the real world.

The first thing you need to decide is which of your coats is most appropriate then work backwards from there. No wellies unless it’s actually snowing. No white jeans.

RedheadGemma · 08/01/2026 17:49

He's not into hiking I know that.

It's going to be a given I'm wearing my red hunters because basically its a guy who asked me out from work and I wore them the other day into work when it snowed, he then dropped in the next day when he asked me out "maybe I'll get to see you in them red wellies again" and I said "take me somewhere I can wear them"

RancidRuby · 08/01/2026 19:44

Red wellies wouldn't be my choice but if you like them, and it sounds like he likes them, then go for it. White jeans are a definite no though. What style/colour coat are you thinking?

TheGirlattheBack · 08/01/2026 19:58

I live in the country and skinny jeans are definitely the most common style to wear with knee high wellies or country boots. Red boots would be fine, they would stand out from the green & browns but no one cares … white jeans noooo.

The other silhouette we commonly see is ankle length turn up baggy cords/jeans and Wellibobs (Merry People mostly now) or Blundstones.

RedheadGemma · 08/01/2026 20:12

Ok so the white jeans are getting the vote of NO! :)

I've got stonewash skinnys, and some straight leg cords like someone said about earlier in a toffee colour.

He does have a thing for the wellies by the sounds of things :)

Coat I was going to wear my Barbour quilted short jacket

RancidRuby · 08/01/2026 20:44

I'd go for the cords I think, OP.

RedheadGemma · 08/01/2026 20:49

They do look nice together, thanks for your help

So it’s not a country walk. Ted wellies required. Big coat, big jumper/slim fitted jumper and turned up boyfriend jeans plus hat.

RedheadGemma · 08/01/2026 20:57

what are ted wellies?

RedheadGemma · 08/01/2026 21:10

question why do people think white jeans are a big NO?

Because it's winter and it's pissing down with rain.

Winter, wet, mud, splashes...I'm honestly astounded you needed to ask!
