Where did you shop as a teenager and where do you shop now?

I loved New Look, River Island and Jane Norman as a teenager. Also Tammy Girl (remember that?) I couldn’t afford Topshop and never found anything that appealed to me.

I wouldn’t shop in New Look or River Island now, more due to the quality than anything else. These days most of my clothes are from M&S, and the odd thing from Uniqlo.

I was a C&A child and teenager. Also loved Dorothy Perkins and Topshop.
Nowadays I find clothes shopping a bit of a pain and very rarely find anything I like.

VegQueen · 07/01/2026 19:59

Teenager - topshop, new look, primark

I loved Tammy as a preteen

Adult - M&S, Nobody’s child, Uniqlo

PiggieWig · 07/01/2026 20:00

Afflecks Palace
Vinted

roadrunnerbeepbeep · 07/01/2026 20:00

Miss Selfridge, Chelsea Girl, Dorothy Perkins, High St Ken market and Carnaby st.

Now find clothes shopping very dull... M&S, Hobbs, Jigsaw, White Stuff and Seasalt and occasional posh jumper splurge at somewhere like Brora

Newsenmum · 07/01/2026 20:01

Teen - h&m, new look, topshop if I was trying to be cool (but it always felt too cool and expensive for me). Wouldnt be seen in m&s.

now - love m&s, next

musicalfrog · 07/01/2026 20:02

Then - Top Shop, Miss Selfridge, Bay Trading Co

Now - no idea, I've given up!

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 07/01/2026 20:03

Teenager - Chelsea Girl, Miss Selfridge, TopShop. BHS for things like school uniform. Occasionally Primark but it wasn't trendy in those days.

Now - mainly charity shops, but occasionally Joe Browns or Monsoon if I fall in love with something there; River Island or Next for basics.

Horrace · 07/01/2026 20:03

As a teenager is was Chelsea Girl, Next, Topshop and River Island

Now it's Urban Outfitters, Fat Face, next and M&S
Depends on my pocket and what Im shopping for. I might go more boutique if I see something I really like.
I dont enjoy shopping, so when I do, I buy what I really like and wear it to death.

tobee · 07/01/2026 20:03

Seem to remember going to Etam and thinking it was quite grown up!

We didn't really have chains in my home town growing up. But we had some pretty good independent stores - an American style one, a hippy type one this was a 70s/80s and a Lady Diana style independent clothes shop - a bit like Country Casuals - all white blouses with pretty collars in the 80s.

I mainly remember window shopping and browsing - places like Benetton. When I was really little by grandmother worked in women's department of various big London stores like Harrods and Barkers.

My favourite memory was going to browse around Biba when i was about 5 years old!! It was like a different world. This was early 70s!

Now I’m quite boring and shop at M&S, Next, Hush, John Lewis etc but online

maddiemookins16mum · 07/01/2026 20:03

Teen - Etam, Chelsea Girl, C&A, Richard Shops

Now - M & S, Fat Face, Roman

MagicStarrz · 07/01/2026 20:05

Topshop, River Island, Jane Norman - similar to you OP

Now I buy things on Next online, I really like Fatface for denim and trousers, I liked gap a lot but that's also only online now.

MagicStarrz · 07/01/2026 20:05

M&S is okay too. I have jeans from there

Horrace · 07/01/2026 20:06

Forgot about Benetton. Used to love it in there

tinytemper66 · 07/01/2026 20:06

Chelsea Girl and Snob.

Comedycook · 07/01/2026 20:10

Tammy girl and the one and only at bhs

As I got older Topshop, bay trading, kookai, Morgan, warehouse, oasis, river island

Now I buy everything on vinted

BeMellowAquaSquid · 07/01/2026 20:11

Jane Norman, Morgan Le Toi, Bay Trading and NAFF NAFF I probably spent more on forever friends and country companions paraphernalia than clothes though. Now I’m anything on Vinted

RosesAndHellebores · 07/01/2026 20:12

Miss Selfridge, Snob, Top Shop, Way In, other boutiquey places, Jane Norman.

Now: M&S, Seasalt, Whistles, Boden, JL, other stuff I see and like.

SuperGinger · 07/01/2026 20:17

Kookai, Miss Selfridges, TopShop, H&M, sample sales

I have a few things I gave to DD and they were so well made, they are on a par with some designer stuff now but they are just 90s and 2000s high street.

idontcareabouttennis · 07/01/2026 20:17

Teens was River Island (when it first came out, was quite ‘posh’ with big ceiling fans and played jazz music), Snob & Topshop, then in my 20s it was Warehouse, Oasis, H&M & still Top shop. Now it’s still H&M, &otherstories, Zara, Boden, Arket

idontcareabouttennis · 07/01/2026 20:19

@SuperGingeryes! I have some old French Connection & Coast stuff from early 2000s which are sooo well made compared to today. And also size 12 when all my clothes now are an 8 and I’m fatter 🧐

SuperGinger · 07/01/2026 20:20

Now, I go to Hobbs, Sahara, Uniqlo, Brora, the odd top from Whistles, a bit of Toast

SuperGinger · 07/01/2026 20:24

Oh I liked French Connection too

HarrietSchulenberg · 07/01/2026 20:24

As a younger teen when my Mum still bought my clothes, most were from the Grattans catalogue, or Debenhams, or M&S as those were where my Mum shopped.
Moved through C&A, Tammy Girl and Top Shop quite quickly and emerged into the local hippy/goth shops when I was buying my own clothes at 16ish.
Now buy almost exclusively from charity shops but brands such as Seasalt and White Stuff. Recently bought my first pair of new jeans in over a decade, by returning an unsuitable Christmas present to M&S and spotting a lovely pair in the sale to exchange.

Smartiepants79 · 07/01/2026 20:36

As a teen- miss selfridge, top shop, c&a, Tammy girl, BHS
Now - Next, M&S for basics. Then a range of high street for dresses or interesting jumpers. A couple of local independents also. Have rediscovered a liking for river island lately as had several nice things from there in the last few seasons.

BooksandCats123 · 07/01/2026 20:44

C&A , Tammy Girl, Bay Trading but mainly market stalls (London)
Now I mainly shop in Tkmaxx, Next, M&S and Vinted.
