Talk to me about hats!

I'm going to start wearing hats and I'd like some advice please!

I don't wear jewellery or much makeup so I feel this is a way to make myself look a little bit more interesting!

I've bought one which I love, and it suits me, and I'm wearing it a lot but I feel I need to get more otherwise I'll look a bit 'samey'?

How many hats is normal?

Any other hat advice?

I don’t know how many hats is normal, lol. If you like wearing hats though, you’ll likely amass quite a few. I have berets, and baker boy hats mainly as they suit me and they are practical too when it’s cold. A few woollen bobble hats too mainly for dog walking. Probably into double figures all in, all different colours and brands.

ColdHenrietta · 06/01/2026 23:46

No idea how many is normal.

I have for a long time adhered to the habit of buying one stupidly extravagant accessory each S/S and A/W season. The thing is I’m not actively that interested in accessories (actual clothes are a different matter) but hats, beanies in particular, are not too far from my knitwear obsession so I find them easy to buy.

This is one of my favourite sites on which to waste time - I haven’t bought from them yet:

https://www.muehlbauer.at/en

Over the last few winters I’ve bought knitted headgear from, amongst others:

Colville,
La Fetiche
Toogood

This year I’m getting something slightly different (not knitted) which should arrive in a couple of days.

Everyone’s different though. I have a friend who buys trilbies from charity shops and looks perfectly fine, where I would look ridiculous.

I’m not sure though, about the plan to make yourself look more interesting with a hat … They’re a garment that is quite noticeable so do rather need to be essentially you. But it’s good you’ve found one that feels … organic.

I’ve around 20 hats. Bobble hats of various types. Fedoras and a few fur hats. Various types and colours. I wear them to stay warm in winter. Probably got about 10 Ascot hats.

NewLimeFish · 07/01/2026 13:41

I love a hat. cloches, berets, trilbys, bobble hats in the coldest winter, a nice straw one in the summer. I have around 40 hats. Currently, the 'pillbox' hat is supposedly THE hat to be seen in, but I'm not sure how to keep it one on, especially if it's breezy.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 07/01/2026 18:19

Ooh @Purplecatshopaholic a baker boy hat, I think that's what I have! Never knew that's what its name is.

I've always had bobble hats as a matter of necessity but never saw them as a style accessory.

@ColdHenrietta actually the creepiest website I've EVER seen but thank you for the tips on where else to look! 😂 just been to Accessorize so far.

Maybe I am already interesting enough after all just for wanting to wear hats? I have dark eyes and so a dark hat brings them out a bit.

What do you do in summer? Just pack them away? Do you have summer hats?

Ooh I'll look that up! Thanks for the tip.

Where do you keep 40 hats??

Also - what's the etiquette around hats indoors? Can I keep it on while browsing in shops? Sitting in waiting rooms?

What do you do with it when you take it off? Too big to stash in my bag!

Practicalities!!

Ladies can keep their hats on indoors - some of the posher weddings I've been to the hats have stayed on all day including the sit down meal.

CMOTDibbler · 07/01/2026 18:35

I like hats. In fact this week I’m doing a millinery course and learning how to make and decorate them. I have about 10 proper hats (trilby, panama, extravagant confection, feather pillbox, velvet wide hat etc) and lots of straw sun hats, fabric hats, caps etc.
The ‘rule’ on hats inside is that before sunset ladies can keep a hat on at all times, but the easiest way to carry one around if you feel like taking it off is with one of the hat magnet straps that lets it hang off your bag

More sources here, @DangerQuakeRhinoSnake, though I’d look at the sale too:

I have various variations on this sort of theme. Love a baker boy hat, lol.

Ooh, I love hats! I particularly love a baker boy, as said upthread if it looks organic to you and your style. I also like a fisherman's hat. I do like accessories generally. @ColdHenrietta love that website (I really don't need more hats).

DinoLil · 07/01/2026 22:15

I have a huge head and can't get a hat to stay on my noodle. Most embarrassing time was visiting an attraction with a friend and we needed to wear hard hats. She couldn't get one to fit, she has a teeny tiny head and even the child's ones were too big. I had the largest one available and it balanced on top of my head like a cherry on a cupcake!

But I do admire a hat. You get as many as you love @DangerQuakeRhinoSnakeand pity souls like me who can't get any to to fit! Hats are just fabulous.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 07/01/2026 22:21

Oh @DinoLil thank you so much and I do hope you can at least benefit from some of the stretchier items of headware!

Wow. Some of the prices of these hats are eye watering!!

Thank you for the advice on wearing indoors, very helpful. 🙏
