I need a good jumper

Hi all

i’m in the market for a good quality snuggly jumper. Ideally something natural fabric but practical too- not too shrinkable, and not something that will be moth eaten in a week. I’m thinking oversized , maybe a large roll neck (although usually I like boat neck). Autumn colours suit.

Amy thought on where I might look and what fabrics to go for?

I really like Woolovers cashmere/cotton blend roll-necks. They’re about £75 I think, but there’s always discount codes knocking around.

divingworldchampion · 04/01/2026 08:38

I’ve just got this from Arket. Delighted with it! There’s a few sizes left. The label says dry clean but I will hand wash it. https://www.arket.com/en-gb/product/jaquard-knit-wool-jumper-khaki-green-1267115002/

I have a little onsession with celtic &co. They do lots of different styles, lots are quite classic but some have a twist. I have a slouchy roll neck jumper, a boat neck jumper, a fennel neck cardigan from them and i love them.
if cold is an issue, i recommend wearing a m&s heat gen top underneath anything you wear.

As for fabric - there are so many varieties of wool to choose from. (MN seems a bit obsessed with cashmere but it’s really not compulsory.) British wool will be the best value, though not the cheapest. Cheap wool isn’t worth paying for.

Darklane · 04/01/2026 11:04

Woolovers or House of Bruar. Both sell pure lambswool , or cashmere, in the sort of styles you’re looking for & have sales on at the moment. I have several of their jumpers that are warm, washable on a wool cycle & have worn well without bobbling.

Cantonet · 04/01/2026 11:40

Uniqlo have jumpers in wool, lambswool, merino, cashmere or cotton.

Pennyfan · 04/01/2026 12:07

I have a couple of Toast Donegal yoke sweaters. Not cheap but the cut is very swingy and modern. People compliment them a lot. Otherwise Arket and Cos are modern, good quality high street. Classic, HofBruar have well priced jumpers, or Celtic and Co who often have discount codes.

Pennyfan · 04/01/2026 12:08

I forgot-Finisterre have really nice jumpers and have a sale on.

Came here to say the same!

Baffy11 · 04/01/2026 17:52

& Other Stories and Bershka.

CelestialCandyfloss · 04/01/2026 18:07

I would try Vinted. I've just got some lovely jumpers cheap as chips.

JillMW · 04/01/2026 18:56

I knit mine so not very useful in terms of which jumper. But sometimes I think people don’t read the post. Cashmere shrinks very easily one error on the machine and you have a Barbie jumper, also not generally oversized!
I have had Uniqlo before and been pleased. I think this one is excellent value if beige is an autumn. Lloyd for you?

Finisterre jumpers are lovely and fit the description for style and colours. Also I got DH a wool-mix jumper from Passenger about 3 years ago, he wears it all the time and it’s lasting amazingly well.

Nifty50something · 04/01/2026 20:12

I'm really into alpaca at the moment. It has an interesting texture and is very soft and snuggly. I have an alpaca and wool blend cardigan from & Other Stories that's just lovely, but they do other alpaca jumper styles as well.

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2026 20:13

Uniqlo as well but also look at the men's as they have different colours. This year, I think only the polo neck lambswool are in the men's rather than the women's section. Just size down.

ZippyScroller · 04/01/2026 21:32

Make one yourself - have a look at Lauren Aston Design they have a beautiful roll neck in forest green - Claudia Winkleman wore on the Traitors. You can order from them or make it yourself. Their step by step guide is very easy to follow.

Any idea of budget? And by not too shrinkable, do you mean you'd prefer not to handwash & would like to be able to throw in the machine?

If so, remembering to use a laundry bag/the wool or delicates cycle & low spin are essential - as one oversight & it'll be buggered?

Moths love wool & cashmere, but I'd rather go for the natural fibres & be careful with storage (doesn't have to be 100%, can be a 60% plus mix for warmth plus resilience).

Natural fibres also don't need washed as regularly - I wear cashmere or wool knits a lot & they just don't become smelly in the same way that synthetics do. In fact, it's better to only cool handwash infrequently.

Are you open to second-hand, or do you prefer new?

Daftypants · 04/01/2026 22:20

Have a look at Pure , yes they do cashmere but they also do other wool and wool mixes .
I have some cardigans from there , they also have a repair service.
I am currently snuggled up in M&S cloud knit cardigan but it’s bobbled really badly

bendybusbuggy1 · 04/01/2026 22:33

Brora is lovely. They do cotton, lambswool, merino, alpaca, cashmere and mohair. I love their colours.

I would quite possibly sell my granny for one of the navygrey funnel necks ... if only she were still alive 😶

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/01/2026 22:48

Arket do an alpaca blend knit which I have in just about every colour way (collected up over the years). It’s soft, oversized - I’m a 10/12 UK and S is perfect - and looks great.

I love the green in this & may just have to order it ...!!! I'd been looking at the roll-neck version, but suspect that shade of green is a tad too sludgy for my colouring.

I need a good jumper
EleanorMc67 · 04/01/2026 23:34

OP - I'd consider this an autumn colour? This is the roll-neck version of the sweater that @Judystilldreamsofhorses recommends above?

I am evangelical about the Italian brand Falconeri. Taken care of, their sweaters will last for life. I really couldn't believe the difference between their high grade wool and cashmere and wool and cashmere I had bought, far less expensively I will admit, in other stores (for example, in Uniqlo).
For the slouchy style you want, I also have a sweater from Jenni Kayne. Not sure if they ship to the UK (I am in the US) but their sweaters would be perfect too.

Honestly it is the best jumper! I ordered the purple that’s in the sale earlier in the week which is en route, but my collection is that cream one I linked to, grey, red, orange (love that one so much), mustard, and a pinky-lilac one. I tend to wear a white Uniqlo tee underneath so it peeps out at the neck.

I also had a great bile-green one which sounds absolutely horrible but really suits my colouring - our previous washing machine/user error did it dirty. Other than that sad story, they wash very well, and my grey and cream versions are at least five years old.
