Style goals 2026!

MakemineaGandT · 01/01/2026 21:11

Anybody care to share their style goals for the new year? 😁

As for me, I’m planning to stop the habit of saving things for best, and just dress up whenever I feel like it - life’s too short to store things for rainy days that may never come…

OP posts:

I still miss Bunty’s Cut-Out Wardrobe

LeftoversAgain · 08/01/2026 10:17

Hi all,

Started the year wearing much nicer fitted tops rather than old bobbly ones and can completely see the difference on my work calls and just generally happier on the school run. Also wearing lipstick, brushed hair, taken off chipped polish and wearing decent perfume rather than crappy watery one my ex mil gave me but I didnt want to waste. Also a lovely cosy scarf tied well rather than just wrapped tightly.

Small changes but does make a difference

2026IsMyYear · 08/01/2026 13:47

I am continuing with my efforts & dressing more intentionally & really making an effort with makeup etc. I feel better for it

I also bagged an m&s autograph navy cashmere crew neck jumper for €38 yesterday!!!!

I have bought loads of wonderful new clothes over the past month woth the full intention of culling all the stuff i don't wear out of my wardrobe. It looks 'full' but in reality its full of bobbly old knitwear from 2018 etc

New Year, new start!!

Bimmering · 09/01/2026 08:57

I was reflecting that I think part of my issues with my wardrobe stem from the fact that I love buying beautiful interesting clothes but ..

  1. I then don't have the occasion to wear them - solution is clearly just wear them anyway, channelling this today and wearing a beautiful silk shirt that I love but never wear because it never feels like the right moment

  2. I am terrible at buying plainer things to pair with my beautiful things. I bought a plain navy skirt from Vinted a few weeks ago and it has made it possible to wear so many of the lovely printed blouses that I have. Solution - further resolution for me is to prioritise buying things that will help me to wear other things in my wardrobe

I have downloaded Whering - what I am going to try to use it for is adding items as I wear them so that by the end of the year, I can see which things I do and don't wear

2026IsMyYear · 09/01/2026 09:45

@Bimmering i am exactly the same!! I'm so bad at buying the plainer, practical pieces because they are not exciting yet they are the key to making the more beautiful pieces wearable!

I don't know why i'm so resistant to it other than that i'm irrestibly drawn to beautiful & interesting clothes similar to you. And likewise i don't always have places to wear them.

I also downloaded the Whering App & uploaded about 40 things over the holidays but then got a bit bored & stopped.

I didn't realise other people could see your stuff & i am not sure i like that idea. I might come back to it...

In the meantime, having bought a couple of special things recently, i am now working on finding ways to make them wearable in a range of ways - such as a beautiful patterned skirt & i have worked out 3 different tops that brings it from super dressy to more casual.

I find footwear is often the hardest part to get right & i'm v fussy about shoes & boots. I invested in some v expensive shoes & boots over the past 2 years & that gives me a far greater range of options prticularly for wearing skirts & dresses more frequently

I think i will focus on the dull but necessary items for the next while - jeans, plain tops to wear beneath things, plain knitwear, new scarf etc

And i saw someone else mention buying things that works with 3 things already in your wardrobe & that struck me as v practical too.

We shall see if i can resist the lure of the beautuful for long...!

Cantonet · 09/01/2026 11:42

@2026IsMyYear You can set Whering to a no view mode. I do as I don't want or need followers.
My main thing in utilising Whering is wearing my clothes enough so the cost per wear is less than £5 per item. Plus reminding me what I do have so I don't go out & buy the same type of thing again.
In terms of basics they're sometimes the hardest to source. I love pure cotton without lycra and a scoop neck. I've found some in Muji but they're not the deep scoop neck that I would really love. I've still bought several as an white/off white top is invaluable under knitwear.
I don't know how many of you follow Melissa Murrell & Invest in style on Instagram but they're both really good at explaining the need for building a wardrobe of basics & likewise a wardrobe that works for your lifestyle.

LeftoversAgain · 09/01/2026 11:44

Me three about buying lovely items, literally all my stuff is colourful and bright but nothing matches. I just bought a black bodysuit from M&S so i can wear with my missoni style skirt

2026IsMyYear · 09/01/2026 12:39

@Cantonet thank you, that's great to know about Whering.

I have no interest in followers or having my wardrobe viewable.

Before i continue uploading items can i please ask if you know if there's a function where the app suggests new ways to combine things to create new pairings?

Otherwise i'm not sure how helpful it is.

Do you recored all your outfits? Everyday?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks

Ghostmartin · 09/01/2026 13:01

What do you do with bobbly knitwear? I've some that's too shabby for the charity shop, I wouldn't insult them by donating it. But what do I do with it?

Part of the reason my wardrobe's too cluttered is I've taken the environmental message too much to heart and feel guilty about getting rid of stuff because I don't want it to go to landfill, so I end up keeping it.

One of my style goals is to deal with this!

CortieTat · 09/01/2026 13:02

My goal is to avoid buying any clothes in 2026. I already have a well-organised wardrobe and a lot of good quality clothes. I also use an organising app, Stylebook. My problem is buying many more clothes than I actually need.

I’ve been using Stylebook for four years and the sense of having everything in neat categories and tracked is nice but it hasn’t helped me with buying addiction.

Cantonet · 09/01/2026 13:07

Yes, there is.
There are several buttons at the bottom of the page that you can do various things with.
Yes, I have done for the last 2.5 years. I even list a couple of pairs of pjs & my wool socks & jewellery plus accessories.
I really like looking at my stats & I use the lookbook function a lot for putting together a 'uniform' so on busy days I don't have to think too much about what to wear. I also use the mood boards to store pictures of outfits I like. The outfit selector I don't use as I have issues with it. The proportion, length & size of things all affect how things will go together & this is often not taken into account on the Whering pictures. Plus I prefer to use current pictures of new items or similar pics to my old items for the sake of neatness. So the shape is often not entirely accurate.

Cantonet · 09/01/2026 13:12

I remove my bobbles @Ghostmartin
I use a Beldray debobbler mostly.
But I did use a traditional cashmere comb for a brushed Cashmere jumper recently.
All my jumpers are Cashmere or cotton.
I don't buy man-made fibres so I consider them worth looking after.

Thank you! I'm going to do this.

I suppose I meant moth-holey and out-of-shape knitwear more than bobbly. Bobbly can perhaps be saved. Excessively moth-holey and baggy, not so much! There's only so many worn-out jumpers I can wear for gardening.

If you have any local animal rescue centres it would be worth asking if they want them. They will often take old blankets for bedding etc, I don't see that an old jumper would be different.
Apart from that they probably just need to go for rags unfortunately.

Cantonet · 09/01/2026 13:59

I had many of my holey cashmere jumpers repaired this year. My local tailor is excellent at repairs.
Some small holes & ripped seams mainly.
The jumpers that are too long/baggy but in reasonable condition for current tastes I'm safely storing away until the next time they come back into fashion.
Or until my 2 dd's want to wear them.
They're currently wearing my old cashmere Whistles cowl necks as off the shoulder jumpers. And a 20 year old cream cashmere poloneck jumper from HK years ago that i'd worn once only.

Catdrama2 · 09/01/2026 14:04

Wear more Barrel jeans as I love the shape and find them so flattering and comfortable

Wear nice PJs

Only buy natural fabrics

Capsule wardrobe for each season

Keep decluttering

Never wear anything that hurts or uncomfortable even if it looks great

Grow out my hair with greys and stop messing with my eyebrows.

I basically want to be warm and comfortable in quality clothes.

Offer them on your local free site, if they are wool they can be unravelled and used for felting.

I’m another who WFH. I try to incorporate exercise into my days so I end up wearing leggings every day and my nice things never get worn.

A couple of years ago I created a casual ā€œuniformā€ suitable for these school run-WFH-Gym-School run days.

It’s just leggings/socks/trainers/hoody but I’ve got nice ones I really like & I bought a few of each item in a colour palette that mixes and matches. So now each morning I can grab leggings, socks, top in seconds without any mental effort but still look put together.

I’m currently working on my casual but not doing any exercise outfits

lilybloomtoo · 10/01/2026 20:54

I have moved all my wardrobe around and tried to style clothes in different combinations. My goal is to look put together for work and I think week it has worked. despite the horrible weather, I have managed to wear pieces with basics I haven't thought about before .It feels like new outfits without the price

minnowonthesay · 10/01/2026 21:05

I’m only buying things that I really love and are perfect, that make me do a little jump for joy when I try them on!
Also, I’m going to cultivate a proportionate wardrobe for the life I actually live - I have far too much evening wear and I probably only have a night out once a week, yet I reach for the same black zip longline funnel neck sweatshirt with my leggings nearly every day, definitely need more smart lounge wear.
I’ve got Wherring, love it. I’m finding it easier to load everything as I buy it and then add in my older items as I wear them with the newer items. The data they have on us all must be interesting reading.

ExpatForLife · 10/01/2026 21:14

Great thread. No more fast fashion for me.

Somethingsnapped · 10/01/2026 23:50

Mine is also to wear my nice things more often, no more keeping for best. And like the pp a couple of posts above, I must only buy clothes I really love and feel excited by...that little jump of joy feeling is a great indicator!

As for getting rid of old clothes, I think textile recycling is an option?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 11/01/2026 08:28

Yeah we took a bag of textile recycling to the tip yesterday, they have a recycling area.

Its hard to be inspired about getting dressed when its chucking it down with rain!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 11/01/2026 08:37

If you have cashmere that is totally past it, Turtle Doves used to take it in exchange for a pair of their fingerless gloves which are amazing.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 11/01/2026 08:38

Odd question, but where does everyone find nice, longer socks? I find that if I wear my barrel leg jeans with standard socks the socks leave flesh exposed, which I don't want.
