What can I wear under

Mamalicious16 · 31/12/2025 16:19

A bright green dress that's a smidgen too small but was reduced to £30 in the Next sale from £150.00 due to a tiny fault.

I'm 38e and size 18 ( the dress is a 16 ).
I can ( with shapewear.) just about fasten it, but am concerned of it gaping slightly when I'm sat down. And the shapewear is nude colour.

I'd really like to wear it this weekend so I have 2 days ( well 1 really as it's NYD tomorrow).

Any tips appreciated

Thanks

But does it matter?

According to @YYYDlilah, @MayIDestroyYou and @Moveoverdarlin, it matters a great deal! Wearing a 'warm weather' dress in winter!? However will we cope. Tsk tsk, the Duchess of Cambridge will be shocked. In fact, she's going to get a law passed to ban such heresy.

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 16:53

You have no idea of how I dress but have jumped to conclusions that I am unstylish. My clothes aren't particularly 'safe and unremarkable'.

You don't come across as a stylish or pleasant person in your posts, @UneAnneeSansLumiere .

People pick the strangest things to get angry about.

Ok, take the Princess of Wales Carol concert at Westminster Abbey as an example then. Did you watch it? Kate was in a long wool deep red coat, lots of navy, dark greens, lots of women in deep burgundy velvet trouser suits, quite a lot of fur, long satin skirts, knee high boots. Loads of dresses with sequin embellishments all very SEASONAL and on trend.

Not a peach or yellow summer dresses in sight.

Whether it’s the Queen Vic or the bloody Ritz - no one is going in sandals and a cotton dress at this time of year.

If that attitude is dated then I’m happy to be an old fart.

Edited

I am going to be wearing it in a Waitrose near you with flip flops

In the real world, here is an example of a 'summer' dress styled 'winter'. There are no tights in the picture, but I can and have worn this same dress with tights.

Wear a camisole underneath and leave the top buttons open,

Rubbish. Tights?? Good grief!! Tights would look dreadful with it. So would boots.

Christmas and New Year’s party will be full of women wearing fabrics like velvet, satin, sequins, fine knits, fur, leopard prints. Because they are current and on trend. The colour of the dress in question is a bright spring colour and it’s a Brodie Anglaise fabric in cotton. Of course the OP can wear what she bloody well likes and we can all F off, but if you’re asking for advise on what to wear on a style and beauty thread, you’ll get honest replies. And most of those are ‘Don’t wear a dress that is A) A size too small and B) Is suitable for a summer garden party.

The weather forecast is extreme temperatures. Other women will be rocking up in fur coats and wool overcoats.

Will they all be in fur coats and no knickers though?

What a horrible thread.

Hoppinggreen · 01/01/2026 17:00

I have "gap issues" with most button up things and sew the offnding area shut and/or put prsss studs in the gaps between buttons
Its a lovely dress

CointreauVersial · 01/01/2026 17:01

Not sure why half the people on this thread seem to have completely ignored the original question and instead given their opinions on the dress itself....

Assuming it's the top half/bodice that's tight? You could wear it unbuttoned if you had a pretty cami top or vest underneath, which would be far better than straining buttons. White would work, but as it's quite a strong colour you could also try black/navy for the winter, particularly if it picks out any darker accessories you might wear with it, like shoes/tights/jacket/cardi. Uniqlo do excellent bra tops which are close-fitting and don't add bulk.

If it's tight around the hips/waist there isn't a lot that can be done.

Mamalicious16 · 01/01/2026 17:01

I might go skiing in it. Or gardening. Or cycling. I. MIGHT. EVEN WEAR. PEACH AND YELLOW TIGHTS!!!!! ( And sandals)

Shock horror. I bet you'll feed off the gossip for ages- enjoy

How rude. Did the OP actually say she was trying to lose weight, or that she was wearing it as a dress for summer?

mcmuffin22 · 01/01/2026 17:14

I'm always freezing so would go for a black jumper over that with the collar sticking out. And thick tights and boots (brown or tan) because I am always cold in a theatre.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/01/2026 18:00

Mamalicious16 · 01/01/2026 14:54

Well, I don't care if it's -8 degrees. I'll wear what I bloody well like, when and wherever I like. I think I've found the work around. I'm going to the theatre. All you judgy folk can clutch your pearls all you like. I love the dress. I love the colour. I will wear it. God I may even wear it twice! And......get it pearls ready to clutch. I'm going to de hair , moisturise and fake tan my legs. And wear sandals. Just. Because. So there!

Good for you!

(Although if you're going to the Bridge Theatre in London, you'll need double fur - it's bloody freezing.)

suburburban · 01/01/2026 18:08

Yes
presumably into the Woods?

also your feet are in suspense in some seats at Bridge Theatre

maybe some thermals underneath

Hideous

According to you, but then you have no sense of style, do you?

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 18:26

If you think looking like that is stylish then telling me I have no style is a compliment.

sunnieday · 01/01/2026 20:49

Why ask if you're going to throw a fit about it?

Gettingbysomehow · 01/01/2026 20:51

Have you tried a .minimiser bra?

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 01/01/2026 20:55

sunnieday · 01/01/2026 20:49

Why ask if you're going to throw a fit about it?

Because she didn't ask for a lot of people to tell her that the colour was wrong and that she was wrong for buying the dress! She asked for a workaround and people instead just decided to stick their oar in. As I've said before, I wouldn't ever ask for style advice from this board. People here are very prescriptive and outdated in their approach, and haven't a clue about how people actually dress in the real world. I have to imagine that they have teleported from the mid 20th century.

Blogswife · 01/01/2026 20:57

It’s a lovely dress op. You could try a minimiser bra . I’m very large busted and I find I can drop a cup size with one .
Alternatively sew a small hook and eye between buttons or move the buttons as PP have said

Gettingbysomehow · 01/01/2026 21:44

Although its a bit late now for our advice. I hope you managed to pull it off for NYE.
