What can I wear under

Mamalicious16 · 31/12/2025 16:19

A bright green dress that's a smidgen too small but was reduced to £30 in the Next sale from £150.00 due to a tiny fault.

I'm 38e and size 18 ( the dress is a 16 ).
I can ( with shapewear.) just about fasten it, but am concerned of it gaping slightly when I'm sat down. And the shapewear is nude colour.

I'd really like to wear it this weekend so I have 2 days ( well 1 really as it's NYD tomorrow).

Any tips appreciated

Thanks

It's still a very boring and prescriptive way at looking at style.

Not at all.

Not at all.

Yes, it is. Do you really look at for example and yellow or peach garment and say 'oh no, it's November, can't wear this'? Because if so that is very odd and not how people dress nowadays at all.

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 01/01/2026 09:05

That is a very old fashioned approach.
There is nothing to say that OP can't wear tights with that dress. I agree that the sizing is an issue, but honestly this place is the last place I'd come for style advice, most people seem stuck in the middle of last century!

Rubbish. Tights?? Good grief!! Tights would look dreadful with it. So would boots.

Christmas and New Year’s party will be full of women wearing fabrics like velvet, satin, sequins, fine knits, fur, leopard prints. Because they are current and on trend. The colour of the dress in question is a bright spring colour and it’s a Brodie Anglaise fabric in cotton. Of course the OP can wear what she bloody well likes and we can all F off, but if you’re asking for advise on what to wear on a style and beauty thread, you’ll get honest replies. And most of those are ‘Don’t wear a dress that is A) A size too small and B) Is suitable for a summer garden party.

The weather forecast is extreme temperatures. Other women will be rocking up in fur coats and wool overcoats.

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 13:03

@UneAnneeSansLumiere I would not wear peach ever, and don't have any yellow clothes.

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 13:06

It isn't odd. How do you think people dress nowadays?

Not everyone dresses as if they were attending a knees up at the Queen Vic.

Well it sounds as if you have a limited colour palette, then, and as such I wouldn't necessarily take style advice from you.

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 13:17

Not at all. Those are two colours. I don't like peach and just don't happen to have anything in yellow. I have clothes with yellow in them.

You'd be the last person I'd take style advice from.

MayIDestroyYou · 01/01/2026 13:30

I wonder if not dressing seasonally might in part be driven by economy? I read on another thread recently that some people view owning a wool or ‘cloth’ coat as evidence of unreasonable privilege; the posters positing this theory seemed genuinely quite angry about it, with the implication being that the only acceptable outerwear now is a black puffer / raincoat type thing that obviates the requirement for an umbrella.

Thankfully none of us is obliged to run our wardrobe choices past any other poster for real life approval!

canklesmctacotits · 01/01/2026 13:43

Yes I think I’d wear it with a sweater over the top and leave the buttons undone. Basically just use the skirt bit. Never a good idea to buy ill-fitting clothes OP, whatever the price! You’ve used £30 for something unwearable!

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 13:44

That thread was about the 'walking around' jacket for visiting Paris, wasn't it.
I'd think taking two coats on a city break would be a bit much for most people, unless one was a thin foldaway coat.

Mamalicious16 · 01/01/2026 14:54

Well, I don't care if it's -8 degrees. I'll wear what I bloody well like, when and wherever I like. I think I've found the work around. I'm going to the theatre. All you judgy folk can clutch your pearls all you like. I love the dress. I love the colour. I will wear it. God I may even wear it twice! And......get it pearls ready to clutch. I'm going to de hair , moisturise and fake tan my legs. And wear sandals. Just. Because. So there!

PeonyPatch · 01/01/2026 14:57

Why did you buy a dress that’s too small for you? Due to my bust, I always have an issue with buttons anyway and in my usual size, so I couldn’t imagine squeezing into a buttoned dress that was a size too small… jeez

If it's that tight it barely does up when you're squished up in shapewear, it's more than likely you'll only wear the once - and have an unpleasant memory of how embarrassing and cold you were on that occasion when the buttons gave out and disappeared under the seats.

MayIDestroyYou · 01/01/2026 15:04

😂😂😂 Oh, @Mamalicious16 - never mind clutching my non-existent pearls, I’m looking at your username and wondering if 16 is the year you were born!

Anyway - enjoy your evening!

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 15:18

A 16-year old would not want to wear that dress.

MayIDestroyYou · 01/01/2026 15:26

Count on your fingers, @YYYDlilah.

Good for you! I mean it. Some of the comments were absolutely ridiculous. My favourite was the one about the Easter Egg hunt, that was hilarious. These people have less sense of style than my great aunt.

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 15:38

But considerably more style than you.

Boomer55 · 01/01/2026 15:44

The dress is lovely, but if it’s too small, it won’t really look as good as it should. 🤷‍♀️

Moveoverdarlin · 01/01/2026 15:48

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 01/01/2026 13:08

Not everyone dresses as if they were attending a knees up at the Queen Vic.

Ok, take the Princess of Wales Carol concert at Westminster Abbey as an example then. Did you watch it? Kate was in a long wool deep red coat, lots of navy, dark greens, lots of women in deep burgundy velvet trouser suits, quite a lot of fur, long satin skirts, knee high boots. Loads of dresses with sequin embellishments all very SEASONAL and on trend.

Not a peach or yellow summer dresses in sight.

Whether it’s the Queen Vic or the bloody Ritz - no one is going in sandals and a cotton dress at this time of year.

If that attitude is dated then I’m happy to be an old fart.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2026 16:01

My tuppence worth is that it’s too summery for this time of year and that tights would be all wrong with it.

And in summer, you won’t want a vest under it as it would be too warm.

I think you should take it back. If you can’t, it might be worth taking into Marks and Spencer’s and trying it on with a minimiser bra.

MayIDestroyYou · 01/01/2026 16:02

Yeah - I guessed it was just an attack of ageism. Fortunately my own great aunts were quite ridiculously stylish.

Each to their own - and Happy New Year to all!

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 01/01/2026 16:41

YYYDlilah · 01/01/2026 15:38

But considerably more style than you.

I doubt it. The fact that you are unable to think outside the box suggests you are not the most stylish person. Safe and unremarkable, sure. Which is fine, but it isn't for everyone. The OP didn't ask anyone what their opinion was on the colour of the dress, anyway.

newornotnew · 01/01/2026 16:43

YYYDlilah · 31/12/2025 21:02

Yes. It's a day dress for warmer weather.

But does it matter?
