Seasalt Quality?

OldMaaa · 29/12/2025 16:40

Hi - I got a Seasalt Janelle coat for Christmas. I was thrilled with it, but within days one of the poppers has come off the coat. I am going to return it, but wondering if this is a common issue with Seasalt?

I love the coat, it's not the most stylish garment but it's lovely and warm (without being too heavy) and perfect for dog walking and rainy day school runs.

However I don't want to have reoccurring quality issues, so I was wondering if quality issues are common with Seasalt (I see them recommended a lot on Mumsnet) or if I have just been unlucky.

There's currently a sale on so I can repurchase the coat much cheaper than the RRP, but hesitant due to this issue.

I have a Janelle and quite a few other Seasalt bits and I’ve always found them to be excellent. I think you’ve just got unlucky this time.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 29/12/2025 17:16

I also think unlucky. I wear their dresses a lot for work (pockets!) and they wash and wear like a dream. I’ve never had an issue

HewasH2O · 29/12/2025 17:16

I've been wearing Seasalt for over 20 years and only had the odd issue which they have always sorted out quickly. I have a Plant Hunter coat which I swear by.

HobnobsChoice · 29/12/2025 17:18

I had either a Janelle or Plant Hunter for about 8 years. The only issue I had is one of the lining in on the other pockets got a hole. However this is a me problem as I jam too much in my pocket and my keyring ends up rubbing on the seam. Apart from that it was in great condition. I only stopped wearing it as I lost 6 stone (MJ) and it was too big

Alpacajigsaw · 29/12/2025 17:18

That’s a shame. My first plant hunter lasted me 4 years and I’ve just replaced it a few months ago, to be fair the old one was still in good enough nick but I’ve lost weight - no issues so far.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 29/12/2025 17:20

Unlucky, I think, their coats are normally excellent quality.

partystress · 29/12/2025 17:50

I have a much-loved Janelle. The zip on one of the pockets broke after about 15 months. They wouldn’t replace the coat but they offered to reimburse the cost if I got it repaired locally.

FourBlackCats · 29/12/2025 21:07

I’ve not had a coat from them, but a dress I bought went thin and holey after about 20 wears 😡

TheLurpackYears · 29/12/2025 21:12

I’m a bit meh about my Sea Salt coat, I got it half price and still feel I paid to much money for it. It’s also some sort of recycled wool, it has a sheepy tang when it gets wet. BUT they do sizes that fit me in my matronly era, so I forgive them.

GennaroHolly · 29/12/2025 21:19

I doubt they would refund for a popper. They should repair it or offer to reimburse you for the cost of repair though. They may exchange it for a new one at a push.

My in-laws wear sea salt a lot and never had any quality issues.

teaandkittens123 · 29/12/2025 22:49

Seasalt replaced a very old coat I had from them when the zip broke so definitely worth taking it in.

She only had the coat for Christmas, so they must refund. They are always happy to refund after any complaints, even if it's not within the statutory period. She's trying to decide whether to order a replacement or buy elsewhere.

BusterGonad · 01/01/2026 01:13

If you like the coat, can't you just stitch it back on? Not the point of the thread but the coat will just end up in land fill..

Floisme · 01/01/2026 07:13

I don’t like my Janelle coat but I keep it because it’s very effective in bad weather and I have no complaints about its quality. It’s possible that the newer ones aren’t as well made - something that seems to be an issue with pretty much every brand.

WorriedMillie · 01/01/2026 19:48

My seasalt coat (not sure of the model) leaks at the shoulder seams

I could brought a new popper back to put on the coat I suppose. But having spent £160 on a brand new coat I wouldn't have wanted to have to fix it within days of buying it. Not like it was a cheap coat!

Thank you for this response. I have sent it back (I didn't buy it from Seasalt - it was another retailer) for a refund. I think it would be a sad state of affairs if something faulty couldn't be returned because it was only a "small" fault.

In the end couldn't actually buy the same coat again as it's sold out everywhere.

I ended up finding a (very similar) nearly new one on Vinted and saved myself £100.

Thanks for all the responses regarding quality, sounds like I was probably just unlucky.

It's not the most stylish garment is it? But very warm and cosy.

I'm happy I found a secondhand one in the end as it cost me significantly less to look like a sack of (warm and dry) potatoes! Grin

I think you’ve been unlucky. I’ve had two Seasalt Janelle coats and not had any issues, even though one of them is second hand. I have other Seasalt clothes and they’ve always been decent quality as well.

Dr13Hadley · 12/01/2026 18:13

My Janelle coat is still going strong after a couple of years so sounds like you were unlucky. I’m just sad they stopped doing footwear. I’ve had some fantastic sandals and boots from them. If I’d known I would have stocked up as they are all many years old and looking a bit tired now!

I imagine they'll replace it. Their customer service is good in my experience. I think you just got unlucky OP as quality is great normally.

purser25 · 12/01/2026 18:25

My Janelle coat is 5 years old and as good as new love it do warm and waterproof

Susgor · 12/01/2026 21:55

I bought a Janelle in the summer sale and I haven't stopped using it since October. Warm and totally waterproof, lets me move and "breathe".... I adore it!!

Susgor · 12/01/2026 21:56

Oh, and excellent quality, no problems so far.

LighthouseLED · 12/01/2026 21:58

I’ve noticed a decline in their general clothing quality over the last couple of years (coinciding with their sizing going a bit weird), but the coats still seem to be good - think you were just unlucky
