Is a vintage cape hideous?

I'm really tempted to get a vintage cape. I think they are great! But will I look like an eccentric bag lady? I'm 55, 5'8 and a size 14. This is the sort of thing...

I think it’s really stylish! I also love it when you see someone who has their own sense of style so if I saw you out and about I’d admire you, same for all you nice hat wearers.

I have a Red Cross nurses 40s cape
Like this one
Im not a midwife 😁

That is epic!

Zov · 28/12/2025 20:52

Hideous. You will look like Sherlock Holmes! 😆

ChikinLikin · 28/12/2025 20:58

I would love a hooded Scottish Widows cape with a contrasting lining. Vintage stuff is usually tiny though. I think the best plan would be to get a dressmaker to create one.

Anothercoffeex · 28/12/2025 21:03

Sherlock holmes, 50s midwife, royle nanny, hogworts, cowboy, jack the ripper. just a few names vibs that come to mind when i see capes or people wearing a cape.

If your happy with it good for you go for it, but not on your nelly am i ever going to be seen in one.

ibuprofenhead · 28/12/2025 21:04

It’s fabulous! Buy it!

SoScarletItWas · 28/12/2025 21:06

Massive enabler here. I have two Welsh wool capes plus two plain black ones (of slightly different lengths so yes I need them both) and a navy belted poncho which is also really a cape in disguise.

I am 5’8/9 and 54.

BUY THE CAPE and be your fabulous swooshy self!

I really like it but you would need to find the right bottoms to wear to avoid looking like you were auditioning for early call the midwife.

Leather leggings. Short mini. Surprisingly, wide leg trousers if you’re feeling like a high volume day. All work! And not an A-line kilt in sight.

JaquelineHide · 28/12/2025 21:10

It's gorgeous!

JaceLancs · 28/12/2025 21:15

Would not suit me but I fondly remember a black felted wool cape I had years ago - bought from a vintage store it was a full circle and draped beautifully

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 28/12/2025 21:16

My nan had that exact cape! I loved it and used to wear it round the house! She always had a very elegant chignon and wore red lippy.

That's how I'd style myself if I got my hands on one. But probably with wide Jeans and trainers, or my skinnies and knee boots.

flippertygibbet4 · 28/12/2025 21:25

If you like it, get one! Who cares what other people think!! My 17 year old DD wears a beautiful velvet one. She couldn't care less what anyone thinks! She looks fabulous in my opinion, and she loves wearing it. Go for it!

bridgetreilly · 28/12/2025 21:26

You will definitely look eccentric but also awesome. Do it!

exse24Londoner · 28/12/2025 21:36

I agree with the majority here - a cape is fabulous & the one on eBay a great example.

Definitely go for it & please send a picture of it when you have!

exse24Londoner · 28/12/2025 21:37

out of interest, if it isn't the eBay one you're looking to buy, where are you looking to buy it from? don't worry, I won't buy it from under your nose 😂

Quincette · 28/12/2025 21:40

Wouldn’t be for me, but I’m a sad slave to fashion 😂

If you have a retro, quirky style, I bet it’ll look fab.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 28/12/2025 21:42

Actually I often see people in vintage capes and coats in my area as they are sold at the local market and can look really stylish.
Bellemoon vintage and Welsh blankets have a website and facebook group. Many pics of people wearing them on the facebook group

ooooooohhhh! your dd's cape sounds fabulous. Link please!!!!!

I bought one, once. I thought I would look fabulously glam and it was thing I could think of to cover my huge pregnancy bump as it expanded beyond belief.

I looked like a walking mushroom. I found it hard to use a shoulder bag, and it wasn't that warm, despite being lined wool.

Still think they are glam though, just not on me.

I was gifted one. Never did work out how to use a handbag with it and the slits for the arms let in the cold

AustralianCrunch · 28/12/2025 22:59

It's glorious 🤩. Sure you will look fabulous in it.

racoonsinbins · 28/12/2025 23:10

Oh god my mum and I had matching welsh capes in the 1970s. I was about seven. Sorry can’t say if cool or not but happy memories 😀

ClaireEclair · 28/12/2025 23:26

I’d love a vintage velvet cape like Dita Von Teese often wears. I think they’re beautiful!

Or Basil Brush.

I had a black cape with fur around the neck which was quite nice but I find the tweed look very matronly.

I'm now doubting whether the photo will appear at all! Here's a link. It wouldn't be this exact one as I think it's too small, but it will give an idea. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/267432667108

p.ersonally I love them. My mum bought one from M and S, then one day i bumped into a famous ballerina (as you do), and I said ,'My mum's got exactly the same cape as you' Must have been about 10.
