Doc Marten Problems

ScreamingInfidelities · 23/12/2025 12:17

So I had my heart set on a pair of Doc Marten Sinclair boots - I love the chunky sole. When I tried them on they were huge! The problem is I can’t size down because it was a 3 I tried in and that’s as small as they go 😫

I wore DMs through my teens and 20s and a size 3 fitted great. Last pair I bought was around 2009. Did the sizes change?

shoes have always been an issue, it now seems a 3 is fine as in some stores (next, M&S) that’s a 35 or 35.5. But in other shops and brands that are bigger made I need a 2 (like converse)

Can anyone recommend good boots similar for an alt elder emo in her 40s with tiny feet?

Doc Martens do kids sizes. I’m not sure they do every style, but they might have similar. Try Schuh kids.

Yeah, the kids section was my first stop. They only do the basic 8 holes in kids and they have a side zip as a bonus. No chunky soles tho and they look cheap in comparison to the adult boots. (Also they didn’t have a 2 in stock I could try on)

Would a pair of thicker socks pad it out a bit? Other than that, you may have to order online and just return them if they don't fit.

MargotMoon · 23/12/2025 12:40

Try Solovair - they are still made in Northampton, unlike nearly all DMs.

I have several pairs of Solovairs and love the brand. They tend to run large, and they start at size 3. You can buy insoles, which might improve the fit.

The women's shoes tend to be nearer the true size.

(I don't like the zips)

They are much better quality than DMs and do half-sizes.

Unfortunately not, they were too long even with thick socks on.

Edited

If they run large and start at a 3 then that’s no use to me. That’s the exact problem I’m having with DMs.

Yes, which is exactly why I posted it.

They might not be - in my experience, the women's derby boots should be OK, but the unisex ones will be too big.

Apologies, I didn’t realise you were replying to someone else’s suggestion. I did look at your link tho, I like them and a 3 is listed as 35.5 so they might be good. Sold out in 3 tho, but have signed up for alerts.

I’m also a size 3 and solivair were far too big for me. I tried insoles, under tongue foam things, heel grips, the works and I could not make them fit. In the end I gave up and sold them on vinted.

as for dr martens, I have embraced the fur lined ones which come up much smaller and are super comfy with no breaking in issues

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/12/2025 13:33

Solovair is the original DM factory in Northants, left when DM moved production overseas about 10 years ago - that’s when fit and quality deteriorated.

I’m an 8.5-9 and would wear size 8 Solovairs if I didn’t need to wear additional insoles for other reasons (so I wear 8.5 with insoles).

Maybe try these in a 3, and look at Superfeet insoles to reduce volume a bit?

Fit with boots always seems to be tricky IMO especially ones that don't have laces. I have to try to remember which ones need two thick pairs of socks.

With my Solovairs,
women's e.g mary janes, gibsons - true to size
derby boots & astronauts - go down half a size
dealer boots, monkey boots - I went down a whole size but I like them fairly snug.

UpMyself · 23/12/2025 13:43

My local TK Maxx has these Black Greasy Urban Hiker – NPS Solovair Outlet but they're in the size I wear in running shoes. They look good on with jeans and are at an unmissable price. My feet just slop about in them. Gutted. Smile

(Good job I have dozens of pairs of boots)

mcmuffin22 · 23/12/2025 13:49

How big are they on you? I have the same boots in a 5 which feel roomy (and I am normally a 5.5 or 6 in other brands). The issue with them though is that they are quite heavy so they kind of feel like they are pulling off your feet. Some of the non quad sole ones may feel fine - I also have the monkey boots which feel quite a bit smaller but are still a 5. Also the fleece lined ones feel tighter.

Namechange8240 · 23/12/2025 16:03

Would an insole plus thick socks work with the DMs?

Better to get boots that fit when they cost that much.

awrbc81 · 23/12/2025 17:03

Interesting, I used to wear size 5 ones back in the 90s and I always have been a 5 and still am.
DD is a 5/6 depending on style and has size 5 DMs which are plenty big enough even with thick socks - so maybe they are bigger now.

Not that it helps you! No advice sorry apart from going for kids DMs in a different style

Agreed, I made this mistake with a different brand of leather boots and they stretched when broken in so my feet ended up swimming in them!
