Old lady clothes

Lifelover16 · 13/12/2025 07:48

I am an old lady, mid 60s and I’m lucky to still be here.
I still try to take an interest in my appearance but have lost my way. I don’t have a massive budget. Please could someone help with which styles will emphasise my old lady looks so I can avoid them?
Thank you

You are not an old lady! 65 is young yet! Wear things you love and that suit you.

Freda69 · 13/12/2025 14:24

Sorry you’ve been unwell and I know steroids can be pretty grim.
I’m older than you - the first thing I would say is get a good haircut with colour if necessary.
I mostly wear jeans or cords (straight or flared) with shirts or blouses from Crew Clothing plus knitwear (wool or cashmere) or a hoodie. We’ve got a dog so I need practical stuff. Colourful trainers because I’ve got hip replacements.
I can’t wear black any more, but pink, red, plum, blue are the right colours for me so I would work out which suits you.

I'm a fan of Angharad Jones, she's young but fairly classic in approach. https://www.angharadjones.co.uk/

I also like Trinny who is in her 60s but has good ideas and often unexpected pairings that work.

I honestly thought this thread was a spoof until I saw your update. I’m sorry you’re ill. Poor health can knock the stuffing out of you.

My advice would be to ditch this thread and start a new one, starting with ‘I have a serious illness’ as your op. Because otherwise this thread is going to fill up with posters taking umbrage at the suggestion that they too might be old - which is enlightening about the prevailing view of old age on this board but not very helpful to you.

I didn't read it as that, I think the OP just doesn't want to be taken for an old lady so she's asking what not to wear.

gerispringer · 13/12/2025 15:00

Im older than you and buy most of my clothes from Uniqlo as do my teenage granddaughters. Basic t shirts, jeans, joggers, knitwear. I stick to colours I know suit me- navy, white, grey, maybe a pop of pink though I have recently splashed out on a burgundy cashmere sweater which was reduced. Ive no idea if these are old lady clothes but they are comfortable, good value and look good.

Rolensausage · 13/12/2025 15:12

Old at mid 60’s??
Lucky to still be here ?

I’m only slightly younger than you and I shop at Next, Zara, TK Max, M&S. I don’t have a particular style. I dress as I please.Certainly not “old”.

Are you sure you’re not pulling our legs here,OP ??🤣

Jamandtoastfortea · 13/12/2025 15:24

Sainsburys have done great stuff - the make is Tu and they’re v reasonable. Would you like wide legged trousers and a top? Sweater / long sleeved t / short cardy? It’s an on trend v wearable look. Relaxed fit dress with flat boots and a tank top is nice and cosy, easy to wear, not tight on waist etc. The sales will be starting any mo and places like M&S will have good knitwear. Trying on at home from online shopping is slwsys easier on your confidence than hideous changing rooms! Xx

Did you read any of the OP's posts beyond the first one?

Seasidewalker · 13/12/2025 15:29

I was going to pick up the point some have made about avoiding elastic waist trousers, I love my Robells and if you've got meno belly, bloat from steroids and other meds they are life savers. I always swore I wouldn't be one of those woman in elastic waist trousers but now I get it!

My meds mess with my temperature sensitivity, the fleece lined Robells are great on a feeling chilly day!

evilharpy · 13/12/2025 15:35

My mum swears by her Robell trousers. Not fleece lined though, I might see if I can get her some of those, where are yours from @Seasidewalker?

The M&S wide leg jersey trousers that lots of us love have an elastic waistband but it sits flat, not gathered which I think is the difference. They don't give old lady at all.

Seasidewalker · 13/12/2025 15:44

@evilharpy I get mine from Lucy Cobb online https://www.lucycobb.com/ the fleece lined ones are fab, I think mine are Marie but I'm not 100% sure. They aren't bulky at all.

I think you are right about flat waistbands, I always wear longer tops with them as well to avoid the legging look mentioned earlier!

I only wish I was pulling your leg.
I have a life limiting progressive disease, but I didn’t want to bang on about it, it’s depressing enough as it is.

I’m nowhere close to 60s but I find it really sad you call yourself an old lady.

I agree it’s sad, but I feel about 80! I was hoping for some positive suggestions on here to help me feel better about myself. I have had some really genuinely helpful and supportive posts today, I do appreciate them all.

FollowSpot · 13/12/2025 16:19

OP, a lot of fashion at the moment is quite ‘retro’ as in high frilly necklines, ‘frocks’ etc and I find that while these look like contemporary on young people they make me (not young) look simply frumpy,

Have a look at Whistles, Jigsaw, Uniqlo.

Concentrate on clean lines and not too much floral. If you go for a cardi keep it boxy and chunky.

Wide legged jeans work well. If quite fitted at the top, not the really slouchy ones. Something like this https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-anyday-wide-leg-denim-jeans-mid-wash/p113420099?size=6&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20158969600&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1wveCESR-TdXYOQNYXrTGdy3&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6duOw_u6kQMVbphQBh16TgeNEAQYCCABEgJJYfD_BwE

Lifelover16 · 13/12/2025 16:24

@FollowSpot thank you - love those jeans. Unfortunately no stock in my size but I’ll know what to ask for when I go for my JL style consult.

I’m pretty old at 54 and this is my outfit today. I tend to wear oversized jumpers, jeans, and always try and wear my best colours so basically autumnal shades. I wear the same stuff I’ve always done but with tweaks - so I’ll still wear a short ish skirt but only ever with very dark thick tights and clompy boots.

just don’t ’think old’ and you won’t go too far wrong

The best thing you can do is get your colours done - if you are wearing the right colours for your skin tone you will look a million dollars whether you are wearing Asda or designer. And getting your colours done means all the clothes in your wardrobe will go colour wise with each other

ittakes2 · 13/12/2025 16:56

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 13/12/2025 08:04

Good lord where to begin.
Ok my dd is in her 20s and carries minimum body fat. She is tall and extremely toned. Are you expecting to dress in the same style that she does?
If not just go shopping and try clothes on. See what you like the look of. Unless you have lots of spare cash, you will need to buy clothes you like rather than the latest style trends, as this will get expensive and time consuming.

Sorry but I think this was an unnecessarily unkind comment, the op never even implied she wanted to dress like a woman in her 20s.

Theseventhmagpie · 13/12/2025 10:17

What a strange and unhelpful response. Of course OP doesn’t want to dress like a 20 year old 😞

There's another thread on S&B where the same poster bangs on about her skinny, toned daughter with her BMI of 18, so weird and totally unhelpful

bizkittt · 13/12/2025 17:57

@RollyPollyBatFaceyou look great!

I used to follow her but honestly her clothes started to make me feel depressed. Sludgy colours in loose silhouettes - nothing sharp or cheerful looking.

I like on IG and.bloom, indiadebeaufort, alexandra.stedman although she does lean a bit sludgy at times, samiabenchaou, tingmystyle, thesilverlining1970

and the classic Trinny and totes inappropes. I've moved away from classic/ boring clothes, it's not me any more. I'd rather wear neon yellow.

CelestialCandyfloss · 13/12/2025 18:09

I would try looking at Pinterest, you can make boards and pin the different looks you like. of different things. Look online for clothes styles you like, and the search Vinted for preloved (or even new) versions. it's also good to ask AI to create you a 'list ' of what outfits and how many you need to build a capsule wardrobe.
