It's taken decades but I've finally found my perfect lipstick

I'm 61 and all my life since I started wearing make up I've never been completely happy with any lipstick shade.

I have red hair( now faded to almost white) and a freckly yellow-based skin tone. Lipsticks are always too pink, too brown, too red, never the perfect mix of browny orange neutral that I've always wanted. I've tried cheap and expensive, some have been good and I've worn them until they inevitably were
discontinued.

Until now.

I was walking through John Lewis beauty hall on my way out of the shop when my eye was caught by the Tom Ford display, looked at the lipsticks randomly and bam! I knew it as soon as I picked up the tube. The assistant tried it on me and it was perfect. Yes it's ridiculously expensive, far more than any lipstick has a right to be, but I don't care, I'll never wear anything else. I'm justifying it to myself because I don't buy many clothes and don't have manicures or any other beauty treatments.

I know it's so trivial but it's made me very happy, shame it's taken so long!
Anyone else had a similar experience?

Please share! I have the same skin tone as you - would love to know what shade it is.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/12/2025 10:31

I found mine 2 years ago at the age of 60.

Then it was discontinued😒

Testingthetimes · 11/12/2025 10:32

i Found mine! A cheap one from Rimmel but it’s like it was made for me. Then they discontinued it a decade ago. Wahhhhh.
I’ve never found anything to
replace it since

What shade is it? I’m almost the same colouring, was a redhead now faded to snowy white but with the same pale, freckly yellow based skin tone. I’ve mostly gone over to corals as pinks, even worse reds or browny nudes make me look like death not even slightly warmed up, and that sounds perfect. I’ve dozens( hundreds of mistakes lurking about the place) which I must have wasted a fortune on.

It's Tom Ford N3 West Coast.

It's a PITA isn't it?
So many of the ones I've used have been discontinued.

Likewise but my colouring is less red than yours. Neutral skin.

I'm using a Nars one in Adulterous but on my lips it looks a bit too dark. I tried it on my hand ( waste of time) and online it looks far lighter than in reality.

I also have Bobbi Brown Pink Nude which is okay but a bit too pink. I like a slightly more beigy pink.

I also have Clinique Pop Shine in Nude Pop which is ok but again slightly too pink.

I want to try a couple of other Nars in Bare it all, Blame and Envy.
I bought at a 20% discount as full price they are over £30.

Have you seen Bobby Brown in Bare Pink...if they still make it of course lol

Thanks

I think I had that years ago and it was slightly too yellow and I don't think it's around now.

I liked their Ballet Pink which was quite glossy- again, discontinued.

I always test lipsticks on my lips. I take a tissue and remove the top coat of the tester before doing that. It's the only way IMO.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 11/12/2025 11:11

I love Mac velvet teddy but I bought one the other day and the colour has changed. I still like it but not as much. Might try your recommendation!

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/12/2025 11:20

Aww, how wonderful op. I’m so pleased for you. It’s amazing how much a little thing like that can pick you up - enjoy.
(Ps stock up, so you have a spare!)

TMMC1 · 11/12/2025 11:23

Try Lisa Eldridge 'Dragon'

ChrisReaPoppedAnEggInMyBath · 11/12/2025 12:00

Oh I love this OP! I am led to believe I'm the only person in the world who doesn't suit the lipsticks that allegedly suit EVERYONE. Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk I'm looking directly at you...

I'm not your colouring but I'm now off to look at Tom Ford lipsticks now as a lovely distraction from very important and pressing work I should be doing.

ChrisReaPoppedAnEggInMyBath · 11/12/2025 12:01

Also, to echo the 'stock up' message, take a look at Vinted in case you can snap up a bargain!

thisoneiscalledbluebellsinpastels · 11/12/2025 12:05

Congratulations OP!!

I have been on similar life time quests - I also have fair skin and need blue toned lipsticks. Most ones I've tried tend to lean orange which looks hideous on me and the blue toned/pink ones either look ridiculously bright or so blue they make my lips look like a corpse.

I have finally found my perfect pink lipstick in MAC pink peppermint - its new and perfect tone for me. It was a bloody great day when I found it.

paristotokyo · 11/12/2025 12:09

Ooh, nice. Enjoy your new lipstick. I immediately googled it and it reminds me a lot of Lisa Eldridge painterly, which is the one for me. I’m neutral fair toned though.

Clinique "almost lipstick" in pink honey or black honey?

FestiveFruitloop · 11/12/2025 12:14

Oh, that’s so pretty and would suit my skin tone too, but yikes the price! I’m tempted but might try and find out if any dupes exist before I splurge…

I know. I gritted my teeth and handed over the card. But then I simply thought it's easy to spend 50 quid a head on a meal out which lasts for one evening.

I will! JL often have 20% off beauty so I'll buy more then.

Hmm I'm dubious about buying cosmetics from vinted or eBay in case of fakes, don't know if I'm being too cautious?

What about ruby woo is it still available?

GrumpySparkler · 11/12/2025 12:30

I've just googled and love that colour OP! As a fellow freckly red head I sympathise with lipstick and general make up struggles!
As a cheaper alternative have a look at MUA Satin stylo in Heroic. It looks very close to the Tom Ford colour, but it's only £3.50. I almost didn't pick it up because the case is like a nude colour, but it's a lovely pink and my go to for everyday wear.
I have dark Auburn red hair, extremely pale (almost blue) skin but yellow/peach toned freckles.
