my mother in law very generously would like to buy me something and I’d like to invest in a solid gold necklace - can anyone recommend where I might look for inspiration? I have a £200 budget.

how lovely of her! Unfortunately gold is trading at record high prices - £200 will literally get you two grams of gold, not nearly enough for a necklace. You could look at jewellery auctions (look up The Sale Room), focusing on 9 carat gold, but even that may be difficult to find.
