I will be singing as part of a choir next week. It will be in a church and we need to wear white or cream. I am also in the front row and also self
cons ious, I would also like to look my best as I am nervous because I am
also very attracted to one of my choir companions and would like to make a nice impression too.
im in my 50’s, 5’8, size 12/14, dark brown hair and tan skin. I’m
sick with nerves as it is but really want to get this right.
any suggestions welcome , thank you.

The Next clearance section has an ankle length creamy beige satin slip dress, bias cut and ankle length, designed for Gap Studio by Zac Posen. It is very low cut st the back. I would wear it with a cream jumper over the top for the performance, and maybe take off the jumper for any post-concert drinkies. Depending on whether you are happy to go bra-less or use the tape stuff

Don’t choose anything that might be accidentally transparent or translucent. Nothing too tight. Nothing with a wide hem that flaps pointlessly around your calves.

What’s your budget? If it’s very low might renting a dress be a better option?

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 04/12/2025 14:55

It’s a really difficult colour choice for winter. Most people’s white clothing is very summery. Satin is the only thing I can think of that will give white / cream a bit of warmth and depth

or … go all out and get a sequin skirt

There are some lovely white and cream suggestions on a different S&B thread (about a low-key wedding) that will be well worth a look for you.

This with silk(y) cream trousers?

Or, on an elastic budget:

I’d say the simpler the better for the occasion.

I was thinking a nice wool type co-ord, lots about, just an example. With a nice long necklace adding a bit of Christmas sparkle, and maybe some ankle or knee boots in a darker beige / brownhttps://www.very.co.uk/the-very-collection-cable-textured-midaxi-skirt-co-ord-cream/1601218018.prd?cmmmc=google--PLA+-+Generic--Women+-+Skirts--PRODUCT_GROUP_321572392994_%5B_AdID_%5D&utm_campaign=Generic_Fashion+Clothing+%26+Footwear+-+Women+-+Skirts&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_term=PRODUCT_GROUP&campaigntype=shopping&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=954328233&gbraid=0AAAAAD2k1i3k8SaEq0OeAh_bGdO6N4rXs&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_8TJBhDNARIsAPX5qxTjMXGen8AhTjXcbnoYkinzrbH8sw3J94wZt9IyVaKJSGGXLCfGajEaAvxmEALw_wcB#sku=sku29652571

Goodluckanddontfitup · 04/12/2025 22:22

A bit more spend but this is nice too, Christmas vibes but warm looking and not too over dressed for a cold church, can wear with tights and boots www.karenmillen.com/wool-blend-embellished-cosy-pencil-midi-skirt/BKK26550.html?color=123

Peclet · 04/12/2025 22:58

Cream tailored trousers from m and s £40
and then a cream jumper or a criap
white t, or a light grey jumper?

very chic winter white outfits.

ResusciAnnie · 05/12/2025 08:06

Can’t advise as I’m not stylish this would make a lovely Christmas romance movie!

ShiningSummit · 05/12/2025 10:41

I'd probably opt for cream cords and a rollneck cream jumper (real wool - merino or cashmere if the budget permits, lambswool if not; woolovers and house of bruar are good bets for wool on a modest budget). For the cords try Land’s End (Boden or Bruar if you're feeling flush). If you go for a high neck jumper you could wear a coloured top underneath if you wanted a more colourful look for post-performance drinks.

If you're a dress person I reckon a knitted dress is the way to go. Real wool (maybe a bit chunky, but true cream colour) looks and feels classy, but there are some cheaper options in nice styles at Karen Millen and this Pomodoro one looks promising.

This cream corduroy dress is a very wearable style, but expensive (£150) unless you’d get more use out of it.

MiddleAgedDread · 05/12/2025 11:12

head to toe in white or cream or just your top half?

FeistyFrankie · 05/12/2025 13:50

Lily Silk has a gorgeous white skirt on sale at the moment. You could pair it with a white or cream turtleneck top or a sweater.

hatboxes · 05/12/2025 16:59

Have you got an idea of what the other singers will be wearing OP? Eg is everyone wearing formal(ish) wear, or will they be more casual, like white jeans and jumpers? Or is it a mixed up anything goes within the colour scheme vibe? That might help you work out what you’d be most comfortable in. Also bear in mind churches can be cold. Good luck and have fun.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 05/12/2025 17:49

£17. In case you don't want to pay too much for something you may not wear a great deal. A cream jumper to go over it is worth paying more for, 'cos you'd get good wear out of it I should think:

Or this which I mentioned yesterday but couldn't link to , £57, more difficult to wear though.

Cyclingmummy1 · 05/12/2025 18:08

White? They are having a laugh!

I'd go with trousers.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 05/12/2025 19:10

Hi OP i’d go with something like a cream sequin midi skirt, camisole, and cropped fluffy cardigan.

Or coordinating set, something like this.

What to wear for a performance ?
ShiningSummit · 05/12/2025 19:19

She's in a choir, performing in a probably not very warm church. I doubt sparkles, sequins or full glam is appropriate.

Lightuptheroom · 05/12/2025 19:24

As in the whole outfit white or cream? I'd double check that as most choirs I know go for dark bottoms with white or cream top/blouse

mydogisanidiott · 05/12/2025 19:28

I’d go for a white jumper and pale jeans
