I have ordered this dress for Christmas parties this year and don’t know how to style it. Is it okay to wear black tights and shoes with it?

I would wear bare legs/skin tone tights with some bright shoes. I may be outdated, but that's what I like.

I have some black sparkly tights on the way (this dress is a last minute option because the other one doesn’t look good), so I’m trying to cobble something together 🤣

Marks and Spencer have come lovely black flowery tights, very in at the moment!

SilenceInside · 03/12/2025 11:46

What would be the issue with black tights and black shoes? Because the dress is navy?

Yeah I don’t know if you can match navy and black? When I wear navy and black my mum usually has a comment for me so I don’t know if It’s just not the done thing

There’s no issue wearing black tights and shoes with a navy dress. Ignore your mum!

SilenceInside · 03/12/2025 11:51

I ignore the “done thing” if I don’t happen to like it….

I have these Esska shoes.

I would wear with sheet or sheerish black tights.

Oh yes. They look lovely and sheer black tights would look great.

That sort of dress is crying out for tall boots. Knee high at least.

Shiny black leather or another colour suede or even velvet or faux leopard skin / snakeskin.

To my eyes shoes with it would be missing the point.

Edited

I have fat calves so I don’t think they’d fit!

I have burgundy heels or black heels, with matching bags.

I don’t know which is best?

OP posts:
MsOtisReflects · 03/12/2025 14:51

Just try them both on and see which you like best?

Dragonsbe · 03/12/2025 14:57

Burgundy heels and sheer tights would look amazing. Do you have a burgundy or metallic bag to go with ? Could look really classy with statement earrings matching the colour of bag

Dragonsbe · 03/12/2025 14:58

Sorry you do have a burgundy bag, I think that’s a very stylish combination. Then just some nice earrings . Less is a more.

The traditional reasoning for the rule is that to mix black and navy makes one or both look a bit faded, particularly under artificial light. I’ve got a not-dissimilar dark blue wooden dress and typically wear it with burgundy tights and brown boots.

Yeah I’m wondering if it would stand for a sort of sheer sparkly pair of tights?

I have bought this dress too 😁 I'm going to wear with snag skin tone tights and I have green vintage style shoes to go with it. If I want to be more casual I'll wear black tights and my platform dms.

It looks awful on me, I’m so upset! I tried it on and it just looks like a potato sack and the arms are too long ☹️

Oh no! I tried it on very quickly last night after my works do so had a few ahem drinks. I was really pleased I did not go with the large as it's very oversized and the arms are long. I'm going to keep it I think as I love the colour and the neck bow. I think keeping it as fuss free with skin colour tights may help, sleek hair etc may be the way forward. Hopefully.

Yeah I fell foul of ignoring that it ran large. I think that a trip to M&S may end up being in order

Hopefully m&s can help out. The pictures on their website shows it styled quite simply with knee high boots so maybe an early Christmas present to yourself of boots may be in order!

BusterGonad · 05/12/2025 10:52

What type of figure do you have Op? That dress wouldn't work for me as I have big boobs and a tummy, so I need something that is more fit and flare, to show I have a waist and am not just a big pair of boobs and the flare to flatter my waist.

bettyfloormop · 07/12/2025 16:30

I love this style of dress OP. I have dug out my ancient French Connection shift dress from the early 00’s to wear to my Xmas party. I’m thinking of bare legs but fear I might freeze to death, so possibly will wear black tights.
