Help with waterproof clothing

Dodie66 · 01/12/2025 19:56

My daughter has her own gardening business and is having problems finding clothing to keep dry when working in the rain. She is now in a third lot of waterproof jackets and today got soaked again
can anybody recommend something that will keep her dry. Surely people like bin men and other people that work outside must have waterproof clothing, I looked at waxed jackets but it says they are not always waterproof and need rewaxing after a while. They are expensive too
thanks for your help

What has she tried so far? Is she out in driving rain? Cold? Wind?
Northern Scotland vs South UK?
what is the budget?

You need to look at the waterproof rating. You need minimum 10k waterproof rating but ideally 20k. I ski in Scotland. I know about decent waterproof gear!!

I have a 66North rain jacket. It was designed for Icelandic fisherman.

What has she tried so far, and is she reproofing them?

The mountain rescue wear Paramo waterproof gear. It is brilliant, slightly different technology from lots of waterproof fabric so it isn't vulnerable to being punctured which is helpful if you're working around thorns and brambles. It is also very breathable and easy to clean.

You just have to wash it using nikwax tech wash then every few washes do a cycle with nikwax tx direct. No need to tumble dry.

It is an ethical brand that also runs a repair and reconditioning service and trade in deals. So their stuff lasts forever.

It isn't cheap but they sell on second hand gear that they have reconditioned which are cheaper.

My coat is coming up for 15 years old. Is worn pretty much daily for most of the year round horses. It needs sending in to replace the zip which has become temperamental due to wear and tear but it still keeps me dry in the heaviest of rain.

Never ever wash waterproof gear in normal detergent. It trashes most types of waterproof. Nikwax products are the only thing I use on coats and waterproof trousers.

Thank you everyone. I’ve sent her links to the ones you’ve mentioned 🙂🙂

Do she have a farm supplies shop nearby?
you can get lightweight rain jackets there usually, I have flexothane waterproof jacket and over trousers, I wear these over a down filled puffa or fleece and my jeans or leggings. Great at keeping me dry when outside working, also easy to fold up and keep in the car or in a bag to use when needed.

Another vote for Paramo, jacket and trousers.
