Eye makeup advice please -dry eyes and have to give up my beloved eyeliner

I usually wear eyeliner on my water line but now I have dry eyes. What way can I do my makeup without it looking like I have pale eyes.
Putting my big girl pants on and posting pics of with and without makeup. Be gentle please 🙏 I feel so vulnerable without my eyeliner 😢

I use these a lot in the dark brown. Can add more on the eyelid near the lash line to intensify the colour. Then add mascara. I'm an 80s make up era person as well and would feel very exposed without any eye make-up so know exactly how you must be feeling.

Blephasol duo has really helped my eyes. I wear lots of eyeliner but as long as I use blephasol to remove the makeup I am ok.

Sorry I haven’t read all the comments but I’d suggest a lash tint (can buy a home kit for this) and use an eyelash curler if you want some more oomph. It really makes a difference. Or if you prefer, a professional lash tint and lift. I think that would look nice but you do have lovely eyes regardless. Day to day I don’t wear any eye make up at all, but my lashes are dark so I just curl them.

Okay, I’ve edited to add that I see you can still wear mascara so ignore my post 😂

LoveLabradors · 02/12/2025 07:25

You’ve got very pretty eyes! I have dry eye too, years of wearing hard contacts and then laser surgery have left them in a poor way. I’m an incomplete blinker too apparently which doesn’t help. I do find wearing an eye mask at night helps as apparently it is possible to sleep without eyes fully closed. I use clinitas carbomer gel. I’ve noted the eye drop recommendations on this thread as might try something different. I find heated flax eye pillow gentler on the eye area than the optase one I got from Boots. Annoyingly my eyes water badly when I’ve done “proper” eye make up for nights out etc.

That's lovely @StressyMcStressFace 🙂

This has been a game changer for me for dry eyes, I’m using it every day and my eyes feel so bright and awake now!

Sorry for the Amazon link, I’m sure you can probably get them elsewhere

Still a bit of practice needed with the makeup. I love makeup but I'm rubbish at it! I started with the warm eye mask yesterday- have to say it was lovely!

I washed out my eye twice last night was sure I had a foreign body in it. In the cold light of day. I'm thinking that the seven lots of eye drops I have to use a day plus the log burner and central heating. The air is just too dry.,

Abracadabra12345 · 02/12/2025 20:48

Honestly you have the most beautiful eyes

DarkRootsBlue · 02/12/2025 20:55

Agreed you have beautiful eyes!

Could you try a different mascara that’s not so clumpy, maybe a tubing one? The mascara looks very heavy next to your now quite naked eyes. I think the eyeliner looks good though in your latest pic. I’ve got dry eyes as well, it can be hit and miss with different make-up brands and types. Hycosan drops at night and in morning help a lot, and keeping the lids clean.

SliceofTosst · 02/12/2025 20:57

Try tightlining. It's looks so good with mascara.

Waterline eyeliner isn't particularly flattering as it is harsh and shrinks eyes.

You can put it under your eye and smudge it in to look smoky.

StressyMcStressFace · 03/12/2025 11:31

Seriously my eyes are not dry any more after reading all your lovely and very helpful comments Grin.

I have never heard of tubing mascara but have had a Google and it looks like its worth a try.

I really need to up my makeup game as I'm very much stuck in a rut!

Love it when women support women!!

I'd also sell my granny for your gorgeous eyes!

I have dry eyes caused by menopause too and I usually use eyeliner on my waterline so thanks for starting this thread and for all the useful tips I have picked up from PPs!

SuperGinger · 03/12/2025 18:43

I'd go for brown or taupe,q I think Victoria Beckham has some lovely soft metallic eyeliners I'm coveting and lose the liner on the bottom lashes so people can see how gorgeous your eyes are.

I've asked for a VB gel eyeliner for Christmas. Everyone says it's the best. There's a less expensive version from Beauty Pie which is good. Lasts all day.

LongOutBreath · 04/12/2025 17:31

I love the gold you've used in the recent pick. How about trying that gold with a dark brown or deep bronze liner, but upper lid only? And mascara of course! I think that would really emphasise the shape of your eyes and golds / browns / rusts / bronze contrast with the colour nicely.

Gridhopper · 04/12/2025 17:57

Bloody hell OP the new look is amazing! You definitely do have make up skills. And gorge eyes help.

Chillymornings56 · 04/12/2025 18:01

I dont wear make up near my eyes either, so can't help with ideas, but looking at your pictures, your eyes look much more beautiful without it.

They are a really striking colour and the make up just detracts from that.

Be bold, go bare!!

Chillymornings56 · 04/12/2025 18:03

Ooh, I've just seen your last picture. I stand by the beautiful bare eyes, but have to say the eyeshadow youre now wearing looks really pretty. Much, much better than the 'before' you

oneoneone · 04/12/2025 18:22

You do have lovely eyes OP. My sister has struggled with dry eyes in the past and swears by gel at night and a heated wand thing - this is the one she uses, but I'm sure there are others

https://peepclub.co.uk/products/heated-eye-wand™-led

I use either a moistened brush and Laura Mercier tightliner or a Chanel waterproof eyeliner pencil under my upper lashes. I sometimes do very minimal lash extensions and sometimes just mascara. I've found less is more with eye makeup as I've gotten older. Also a fan of the Perricone MD no makeup eye makeup.

I have a VB gel eyeliner @justasking111 in Seagrey.
It’s grand.
No better than a Hildun one I have or the Boots No. 7 ones.

soccermum10 · 08/12/2025 07:26

You could use a brown eyeshadow blended underneath the lashes. Although you're eyes look lovely without

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/12/2025 12:03

I can imagine that a waxy, eyeliner ‘pencil’ could block the meibomian glands and cause dry eye but I don’t think a light eyeliner pen would do this. Maybe it’s worth trying a pen before ditching tight lining. I use Collection fast strokes eyeliner pen in my upper waterline and wouldn’t have thought it would block anything.
Though OP I would agree your eyes look lovely in the last photo you posted.

Opticians hate eyeliner on the water line. Just wear underneath as PP have said. I like a Clinique hard pencil and smudge it a bit. For more drama add eyeshadow line.
