Feel like I’m too old for some shops. Don’t know my style. Need some going out clothes. Trousers, tops, skirt

OP posts:

I mainly shop in Primark and New Look as that's what's in my high st and therefore walking distance.
On line its Disturbia and Joanie mostly with a sprinkling of Vinted.

TheOGCCL · 29/11/2025 19:12

I find I need to trawl all sorts of retailers to put together something that is neither too old nor too try too hard. And also for natural materials.

I would miss Mango if they went. I like Zara for trainers. Seasalt for cords. New Look for basic t-shirts. The supermarkets. ASOS as they have loads of different brands. Abroad when I'm on holiday. Got a nice jacket in H&M this season but generally find it too cheap looking. Jigsaw for tops. Feel like Uniqlo should work better than it does, I only have the merino jumpers and a massive mens coat. Next for jeans. I think Abercrombie has potential for jeans too.

I don't really buy in M&S for some reason. Always something slightly off and the one t-shirt I bought there I had to get three sizes smaller than usual.

I don't have to dress particularly smart for work, in fact you can easily look overdone. Same for going out where I am, it's basically day outfit plus jewellery.

I enjoy shopping and clothes though so none of this is a chore.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 29/11/2025 19:14

Vinted. Bloody love it. And M&S has been amazing recently.

Perfidia · 29/11/2025 19:22

YYYDlilah · 29/11/2025 18:55

Chums @Perfidia

Jesus Christ on a bike! 😮

Perfidia · 29/11/2025 19:29

I haven’t seen the word ‘Winceyette’ since the 70s …

TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango1 · 29/11/2025 19:38

Cos, Uniqlo and Beyond Nine (for trousers) are my go to shops (49 though but feel 50 😂). I wear Primark leggings a lot around the house, would love to find a really comfy well made brand of leggings.

bugalugs45 · 29/11/2025 19:45

47 and living in M&S at the moment!

TheOchreRaven · 29/11/2025 19:49

Uniqlo, Sezane, Massimo Dutti & COS

CountryCob · 29/11/2025 20:06

Next, start with a click and collect, try on in changing rooms, if not happy can return there and have a look around at the same time, they have some convienent edge of town shops X

IvePiercedMyFootOnASpike · 29/11/2025 20:07

Louise Redknap at Peacocks has some lovely things

Foodylicious · 29/11/2025 20:08

Not meant harshly, but what has 'size 12' got to do with it?
Most shops cater for size 8 to 18 (with the odd few bits bith smaller and larger).

Is there some fashion trick im missing here 😕

Comefromaway · 29/11/2025 20:10

Willowskyblue · 29/11/2025 20:51

@DarkForces Im intrigued to know how you use AI to do this. I’m a complete AI novice but a big Vinted fan!

YouOKHun · 29/11/2025 20:59

@Gettingbysomehow FFS that Chums site is horrific! I’m pushing 59 so I suppose I could be its target market. What’s worse is that even though it’s aimed at someone older they STILL can’t bring themselves to use models over the age of 40 to show off the zip up black orthopaedic shoes or the bath lift.

similar to others, my vote goes to M&S (online only, there is rarely any stock in their shops, except for the huge branches), Vinted, Uniqlo and a bit of Cos and Zara. I’ve also identified a local boutique which has lovely different and interesting things and is a relaxing place to browse - not the cheapest but I’m glad I actually went in and had a proper look. Perhaps there is a nice independent fashion shop near you OP? They’re often really helpful in suggesting things.

goldfinch2006 · 29/11/2025 21:15

I am size 14 and not able to find anything I like.

Perfidia · 29/11/2025 21:22

It’s terrifying, isn’t it, @YouOKHun?

I feel the need to declare that I’m spending my early sixties determinedly filling the Raey-shaped gap in my life with:

Community Clothing
Lemaire
Loulou de Saison
Rika Studios
Rohe
Sofie D’Hoore
Toogood
Toteme

alongside the brands I loved before (missed out Acne Studios and several others) that managed to survive Covid intact.

But I may still need to shower with Dettol to erase the memory of a winceyette nightgown on that dreadful site …

Home of the satin kaftan 😂

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/11/2025 00:13

I like Marks for jeans
All Saints
A few things in Whistles but their quality has gone way down and their sizing is all over the place
The odd dress in Fatface but their quality has gone way down and their prices way up
Phase Eight jumper dresses
The odd bit in Cos - mostly just T-shirts plus a couple of jumpers
I’m teaching myself to sew too

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/11/2025 00:18

I’m 52, size 12. Mainly shop in Cos, Arket, &OtherStories, New Look, H&M, ASOS.

I do get the occasional thing in M&S, recently a lovely dark green alpaca knit, but only if I see it on someone on TikTok or Instagram. I don’t tend to browse in there despite having an absolutely massive branch here. I got some great jeans from Albaray a few months ago which isn’t a store I’d usually go for, but again, I saw them on TikTok. Jeans I mainly get from Abercrombie or Levi’s. I quite like Urban Outfitters for t-shirts in summer, and also cardigans.

MiddleAgedDread · 30/11/2025 00:26

I’ve given up shopping!

StruggleFlourish · 30/11/2025 00:46

Second had thrift shops, 100%
I haven't gone to a retail store to buy clothing in probably 30 years.

AmicaNemica · 30/11/2025 10:26

M&S
Cos
Arket
JL
It helps to have a good wardrobe to 'shop' from to mix things up.
I like Instagram reels, loads with women of all ages trying stuff on to camera and suggesting ways to freshen up looks. Or look for 'what are women wearing...?' in Paris, NYC, London, Milan etc for inspiration.

Cantonet · 30/11/2025 13:10

Well, I'm 61 so feel free to ignore if preferred....

Uniqlo for JW Anderson shirts & jeans, satin & velvet easy trousers & down jackets in the sales.
M&S for the Sienna Miller range, faux sheepskin gilet, 2 tone jeans & leather belts.
Muji for pure cotton T Shirts.
Tk Maxx for wool & cashmere coats & scarfs.
Zara for basic cotton vests & boho blouses.
Brora for lace edge thermal vests.
eBay for Leather bags & New cashmere cardigans.
A few bits from Primark The Edit.
