Chic and cheerful: something stylish and happy-making to wear when WFH?

I seem to have slipped into wearing black tracksuit pants and random layers and a depressiing cardigan to keep warm. I look increasingly dowdy and dull. I am home a lot at the moment, but getting dressed in the morning mainly for comfort and warmth is getting me down.

What can I wear to cheer things up (obv a ball gown would be fab, but a bit impractical to walk the dog)? I thought about a beautiful fairisle jumper, but I hopeless with shrinking wool items. I don't want bobbly polyester or acrylic though either.

What’s your budget?

RosesAndHellebores · 28/11/2025 11:12

When working from home I dress as I would dress for work. It keeps my mind in the right place and gives me a little purpose. I always gave a little walk before starting work too. It gets in some steps and serves to break leisure to work.

Up to £200 for something nice.

Replace what you usually wear with something similar in a brighter colour? Whatever takes your fancy, i have a wonderful coral colour fleece which is my WFH favourite.

CapriceDeDieux · 28/11/2025 11:29

I think I want something just to feel lovely in, not sure if that's a quality issue or a warmth issue?

Get one of these in whichever colour (scroll) cheers you most:

Their new season clothing will be above your budget, but scroll down if your interest is piqued.

I just bought a fab stripey jumper that suits me and is warm!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 28/11/2025 12:22

If you like fair isle, why not hit vinted, buy yourself a few in a size up so if you shrink them it doesn’t matter all that much.

theres loads on for £25-40 at the moment. Go for a good brand and look at the tags for material breakdown.

Wool is the answer unfortunately. I have a fab jumper from hush which is comfy, cosy and makes me feel put together. Can wear with jeans or leggings and uggs on WFH days and with a heat tech base layer underneath

30 degree wool wash low spin in laundry bag with a towel to dampen the force is your friend for washing. That and M&S fabric wipes for spot cleaning small patches.

Also get 2 pairs of really nice leggings from Lulu or Sweaty Betty in black or navy. Keep for WFH days and ensure they don't get pulls or snags.

This one is also lovely if the colour would suit you

This - its slightly boxy and more structured shape make a bit smarter than a normal cardie over trousers or a dress. www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E480025-000/00?colorDisplayCode=69&sizeDisplayCode=003

I wear a beautiful Aztec cape which makes me feel like a million dollars compared to my normal cardigan of doom

ParisianLady · 28/11/2025 15:33

I wonder if you need some cashmere which is thin enough to layer, is really warm, and washes in the machine on a delicates wash (though doesn’t need much washing) There is lots of EBay if you want a bargain.

Today I’m wearing (I am WFH in my cold house)

  • thermal long sleeve top
  • cream cashmere roll neck oversized jumper
  • black boyfriend jeans
  • black jersey blazer
  • chunky black boots
  • fingerless gloves a la Claudia

Warm, comfortable, and put together enough for work calls.

Thoughtsandprayers · 28/11/2025 15:54

I naturally revert to baggy scruffy clothes that feel soft and comfortable at home so started making much more of an effort.

Generally I will wear yoga pants or soft elasticated waist trousers with a thermal layer and jumper on top.

Today I’m wearing Sweaty Betty gary pants, Uniqlo heatech l/s top under a Uniqlo cashmere poloneck jumper, turtlesdove cashmere wrist warmers, cashmere socks and furry mule slippers.

Have styled my hair (ish) and put on some lipstick too.

Buy a heated throw, it will keep you so toasty that you don't have to wrap up so warmly to be comfortable. And make sure you have some nice jewellery, I always feel so much better if I'm wearing jewellery and it makes me look more like I've bothered on Teams calls.

On really cold days I quite like a shacket, I have a couple from Pull & Bear and Zara. I think they feel warmer than cardigans.

Oh! Lovely to return to so many gorgeous suggestions!

I have an evening of googling luxury knits (and fluffy mules!) - thank you all so much. I love the knitted co-ords and the Brora and Hush jumpers.
