Winter long skirts

This summer I lived in longish elasticated waist nice skirts with a tshirt. This suits my body as, as an apple, I really struggle to get trousers to fit.

I've had a good mooch online and in some shops and there are very few winter weight long elasticated waist skirts - those there are are satin or occasional wear. Is it that nobody wears skirts, tights and boots anymore or am I looking in the wrong places?

That seems to add a lot of bulk around the waist, which wouldn't suit many women.

Kemi Telford skirts are generally very fitted at the waist, but gathered over the hips, so they don't add bulk around the waist. The OP says she's an apple shape, as am I - so our hips aren't the issue regarding fit - it's our waists & tummies that are large in proportion to boobs & hips! She has spent the summer in fitted T-shirts & elasticated waist skirts - & the one skirt she posted herself (see image) to show what she was looking for was a gathered cord one.

Lots of people seem to have just seen 'Winter long skirts' & not read further. Not very many of these long, narrow/A-line/bias-cut skirts would flatter an apple shape - our tummies would stick out &, if zipped not elastic, we wouldn't be able to get the zip up!!

I wear a cotton tiered underskirt from Amazon available in different lengths under my long dresses in winter. Gives an extra layer of warmth

OP - not sure if you've come across these Jigsaw skirts before, but they've brought similar styles in different colours out for the past few years - & they're all plain, & midi-length with elasticated waists. They're great with a little T-shirt in the summer, comfy with pretty details in terms of ruching etc - & I also wear mine in winter with oversized or slim-fit roll-neck wool/cashmere jumpers, warm tights & knee-high chunky leather boots.

The fabric is a man-made but really lovely satin that isn't at all shiny or cheap-looking. None in the range this year - but if you look on eBay/Vinted under Jigsaw "Crocus skirt" or "Jigsaw satin skirt" or "silky skirt", you'll find quite a few from previous years. Crocus is the name of the range in that particular fabric - there are tops, dresses & loose trousers too. I am around a 16 in the waist but with narrow hips - so I can easily wear a 12/14 in the Crocus skirts & trousers.

Others have mentioned wearing a slip/underskirt - you can get silk/merino wool full- or half-slips that would add warmth? And nobody will see them so you don't need to worry about being "frumpy"!!! You can stay warm AND look good ...

That red one is OK, but the orange one posted earlier definitely adds bulk at the waist.

This is not going to be a popular suggestion but ive bought a few long cord elasticated waist skirts with pockets from Temu. They look great and go well with my Lanx boots and relaxed style tshirts as well as jumpers.

notacooldad · 23/11/2025 21:42

This is one of the skirts I have.

I e just bought 2 long skirts, this black one which is chiffon-y and I wore it out on Saturday with this tshirt and didn’t feel too
cold even though it’s not a winter one! It’s an elasticated waste and very comfy!

I have to try on things Vinted is always a bit of a punt for me- because of this I never buy anything more than £10 unless I already own it in another colour. Definitely some ideas here though.

I ended up gift shopping in John lewis today not clothes shopping so never got a chance to look or try on skirts sadly.

I’m a big fan of charity shops and a brand I always come across and have bought is country collection. They are really good quality and have part elasticated waistbands . I’d never have sort out the brand new it’s just not on my radar . They are a basic corduroy A-line shape.

@StarDolphins I need to know - did you iron the t shirt before you went out, or was the crumpling a look?

(Nice outfit, either way!)

😆 I (begrudgingly) ironed it!

Phew!

Have a Google for knit maxi skirt or midi, or knit maxi dress. Everywhere does them, they're a thin smooth knit rather than chunky normally.

Birdsongsinging · 24/11/2025 13:08

@Swimmingbackwards i saw skirts in Zara the other day. Although they look like long satin slip skirst they are thicker and have elasticated waists that look like they wouldn't add too much bulk. Depends how much of an apple you are I guess but I thought they looked good. They were only about £30 as well.

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 24/11/2025 15:38

Try Oglmove. I’ve only bought their dresses but their skirts look like they’d fit the bill for your requirements.

Have to agree, I'm loving the dropped pleats this year. Giving us apples a fighting chance in the skirt game!

This is an excellent skirt thread. I missed out on a lovely green velvet maxi on Vinted recently by a brand called Jumper - I think I remember them from the 90s, maybe a bit like Racing Green?

Knitted-skirt wise, I have a nice one from. hush but have to be breathing in in it when standing side on, and I'm only a 12-14 😁

Someone mentioned White Stuff - they often do great winter skirts.

mixedpeel · 24/11/2025 23:02

I have this from Primark. Won’t be natural fibres but it has a nice feel to it. Scroll down the images to see a close-up of the fabric. It’s a simple pull-on elasticated design, very easy to wear. I’m not an apple but I think it would suit:
