Winter long skirts

Swimmingbackwards · 22/11/2025 16:11

This summer I lived in longish elasticated waist nice skirts with a tshirt. This suits my body as, as an apple, I really struggle to get trousers to fit.

I've had a good mooch online and in some shops and there are very few winter weight long elasticated waist skirts - those there are are satin or occasional wear. Is it that nobody wears skirts, tights and boots anymore or am I looking in the wrong places?

Those are great skirts (if long enough?) The photos of the first in black show the waistband. Is it actually ‘elasticated’ or simply rib knitted?

I was also tempted by that until I saw it in real life. I’m afraid the fabric is horrible.

You're probably right about elasticated. Some are flat at the front and have elasticated ribbing at the back and that is good too.

I'm not sure! Has anyone seen them in real life?

Editing to add that I'm talking about the Celtic and Co skirts I linked just upthread,

Seen anything you like op?

I just bought a navy double-cloth cotton skirt with a shirred waist in the Boden sale for £27ish.

I am planning to wear it over thermal leggings with boots and lots of layers on top now, and as a summer skirt in the summer.

Double Cloth Smocked Skirt-Navy

Our doublecloth smocked midi skirt is 100% cotton and the ultimate summer no-brainer. The deep elasticated waist and flared shape is flattering and comfortable. It comes in eye-catching prints and colours. What's not to love?

Oh no ... I'm a very tactile person & love my silks/satins/velvets ... & if not natural fibres it at least has to feel nice!! Drat!!!

I do the same with my cotton/silk/satin gathered skirts too - as long as they're not a light summery print but a dark/rich colour or pattern, I just add extra layers on top & below! Suits me as I overheat so easily that I prefer to be able to remove layers easily. Wool mix/thermal tights are good when outdoors though.

I somehow missed your requirement for an elasticated waist in your OP. I think that might be where the difficulty lies: an elasticated waist on a winter weight skirt is likely to look quite bulky. Doing the opposite of what you want, in fact. The type that look good would be in fine wool or cashmere, with a wide waistband - and would cost considerably more than you want to pay. The same with cotton cord or velvet.

I'd agree that's the reason why there are fewer winter than summer skirts in a full elasticated waist style - they just become too thick & bunched up.

But the flat front & elastic back does work well. This Justine Tabak Bobbie style is gorgeous (cotton or linen but I'd happily wear with jumpers & boots - if I could afford them at £200+!!!).

It felt like a shell suit. Not nice.

I've got a few Kemi Telford ones that I wear in summer. This cord one comes in mustard or royal blue - & there's also a denim one though it could be more like chambray.

That seems to add a lot of bulk around the waist, which wouldn't suit many women.

That skirt would be great for folk dancing.

I've just bought this cord long skirt from Seasalt. It's 100% cotton & fits really well (but not an elasticated waist). It's quite thick cord, not needlecord, but it's very soft & hangs nicely. 25% off currently with their Black Friday deals. I'm 5'8" & it's about the same length on me as the model. I got the sea cave blue.

I've got a great Jil Sander really heavy ribbed, full skirted 100% cotton one and a Le Kilt gabardine one.

Not budget friendly mind!
