Anyone else struggling with the 90s revival?!

I’m 5ft nothing, quite curvy and the current 90s look just doesn’t suit me - and it didn’t suit me the first time around either! 😂

I know I don’t need to follow fashion and can wear what I like and mostly I do. But I’m really struggling with jeans. I bought a pair of wide leg ones and thought they looked nice until I saw myself in a photo wearing them 🤪

Have any shorties found jeans recently that are flattering and not too dated? Or should I just give up and stick to dresses and boots until this trend ends?

thanks in advance!

I’ve seen people in all sorts of jeans op.
Have you tried the hugh waisted “ mum”jeans? They look really flattering and contemporary.

Claudia in traitors was wearing skinnies with her gorgeous big boots - and looked awesome!

I’d personally go for what suits me. Not a Stone Roses revival.

HearMeOutt · 15/11/2025 20:49

Yes but mainly because last time I wore 90s fashion I was about 10/11 and it reminds me of being a child! As a millennial who lived in skinnies for 15 years, I’m finding it hard to acclimatise to wide legged jeans - particularly in winter as I can’t wear them with boots of any sensible footwear without looking like Bob the Builder in drag.

ThatAlertLilacFinch · 15/11/2025 20:51

I can’t get on board with a wide leg jean either - I like a slim mom in the summer or a skinny jean in the winter (with chunky boot), and for evenings out I like a bootcut/flare. I think anything goes for jeans atm!

StrongLikeMamma · 15/11/2025 20:52

Or “boyfriend” jeans?

I’m mid 40s, 5ft4 and fairly curvy (size 12 but hourglass) and must say I’m loving it! I’m not into pattern, love wide leg trousers and simple tops/shirts. I hated the low waists of the early 2000s and the skinnies thereafter and mostly wore dresses for that long period of time!

ICriedAllTheWayToTheChipShop · 15/11/2025 20:59

I'm afraid I'm really enjoying the 90s thing at the moment. In the actual 90s I was plump and lacking in enough confidence to wear the fashions of the time, but now I'm less plump and generally apply the rule that if I like it, I'll wear it. I'm having fun with tartan and pinafores now!

As for wide-legged trousers, those weren't around in the 90s in the same way, but I find them really comfortable and flattering. I think if you can get the length right you're good to go - maybe have them taken up if you can't find any that are short enough?

iI'm finding this general reluctance to let go of skinnies quite baffling - jeans shapes have always changed every few years and people have never (that I can remember anyway) clung as hard to a trend as they have to skinnies. They're not even comfortable to my mind. What is it about parsnip legs/looking like Max Wall that some people find so hard to relinquish?

Octavia64 · 15/11/2025 20:59

I mean…. I’m 5ft2.

i do look fat in them. But they are so comfy. So I’m wearing them anyway.

EveryDayisFriday · 15/11/2025 21:05

I'm curvy and prefer bootcuts. Wide legs are not flattering and make me look too bottom heavy. I was late to the skinnies because of parsnip thighs and eventually wore them to death, now anything billowing feels odd.

From what I can see it's mostly Millenials who are clinging to the skinnies. It's hard when the staple fashion item from your younger years are no longer the thing. Whereas as a Gen X I'm flipping delighted that the loose-fit look is back in because I feel like I'm in my 20s again.

I never got on with skinnies just because I found them so uncomfortable at the time, but they do look incredibly dated now.

Ketryne · 15/11/2025 22:51

I’m with you. I’m a skinny-loving millennial and they’re just so much more practical, I miss the ease of throwing them on with a big jumper and chunky boots in winter and being good to go.

I have a different set of issues to you though, I’m quite tall with out-of-proportionally long legs and getting wide leg trousers the right length on the high street is basically impossible. They sit too high on my shoes and just look silly! I’ve settled for a couple of pairs of cropped length jeans - one ‘mom’ jean and a slightly smarter slim ‘barrel’ - then worn with longish ankle boots to fill the cold gap. With skinnies, length mattered so much less.

I also don’t have much shape up top but am wider at my waist, so fitted tops mostly look rubbish. You can’t be baggy top and bottom so it’s really hard! I hate the way skinny jeans have become virtually political. You can’t wear them without feeling like you’re making some kind of point.

ForHazelTiger · 16/11/2025 03:31

I don't like it purely because the 90s is not a decade I want reminders of (teen years). I was very glad to see the back of skinnies though - so uncomfortable and always falling down!

LostittoBostik · 16/11/2025 03:44

same height - I rarely wear wide trousers, I wear straight leg or mom shape, and if I wear wide I make sure they end at the ankle so you get a good bit of boot/shoe below to stop me looking swamped

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 16/11/2025 03:53

I'm absolutely loving it, in my 50s and wearing exactly what I would've worn in my 20s - loose wide jeans, a short and reasonably fitted top and sneakers. So comfy and effortless.

I'm tall though. If you're shorter, maybe try slightly cropped barrel leg with some slim ankle boots so you get more shape and less volume.

rafeal · 16/11/2025 05:29

I’m the same height and although slim I have a curvy in and out shape. I must have tried on every pair of wide jeans or trousers and am so glad there’s a choice of shapes now as wide leg just look awful on me, utterly ridiculous. In the 90s I wore combats which seemed to work ok.

I now wear straight or slim jeans, not skin tight skinnies but the sameish profile. I just look good in them and they’re so much easier to dress. I also find high waisted suit me as they make my bottom half look longer whereas low waisted cut me off and shortened my legs. I hated them. I do still have a couple of pairs of skinnies which I’ll put on with chunky fur lined boots and a big jumper when it gets cold (looking forward to that). Maybe dated but I’ll look good for my shape, perfect for the weather and will be toasty warm.

I like the comparison to Claudia’s wardrobe on traitors. She wears what looks good. So skinnies and boots one day, a volumous tutu the next! If you think about it, the way everyone changes the way the look to look exactly the same as everyone else is a bit weird - I don’t have the figure or the confidence for a tutu but appreciate it on someone else!

WittyJadeStork · 16/11/2025 06:58

I wore skinny jeans in the 1990s I also wore boot cut and flared jeans.

thankgoditssaturday · 16/11/2025 07:07

Oh that’s why I’m liking the styles at the moment. I’m 58 and suddenly liking a load of stuff in M&S. Never did the skinny jeans thing tbh. It went on far too long.

Maybe add a few 90s inspired accessories instead of a whole 'look'?
I was a student in the 90s, loved some of the clothes then, but I'm 30 years older now and so am not embracing the trend quite so much.

I think people can wear whatever jeans they're comfy in, labelling clothes as dated is just buying into the idea that we constantly have to buy more.

Honestly, I hate all this rubbish that's forced on us - if you feel comfy and happy in skinniest then wear them. Style is as much about being you, expressing yourself, than it is following everyone else. I have a variety of jeans in different styles, shapes and sizes, and wear whatever I feel like wearing.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/11/2025 07:23

I don't recall wide leg jeans in the 90s. I think mine were straight or boot cut. I recall stirrup leggings and long baggy jumpers. Jackets were quite long line too. And waistcoats and Droopy and Brown dresses.

Adds caveat, I was pg on and off from 93 to 98 so may have a skewed view.

Smittenkitchen · 16/11/2025 07:23

I even saw a bright orange thong poking out of the top of some low slung jeans the other day! It's been many a year that I'd seen that sight, can't say I missed it!

Oh gawd, I hated that look. Younger folk were still doing that in the early 00s too.

WorriedRelative · 16/11/2025 07:28

I hated skinny jeans, they made me look so top heavy. I am enjoying wide legs, haven't quite got my head around boot cuts coming back though. I am a bit worried about looking as though I have just dug out the ones I had when I was 20.

OvernightBloats · 16/11/2025 07:29

Give the wide jeans fashion a miss if you feel it doesn't suit you. Don't be a slave to a trend if you don't like it.

I am the same height as you and I am sticking to straight leg jeans. Not everybody is wearing wide legs - there is still lots of choice.

Also, some wide leg jeans can be very noisy! That would annoy me so much if I wore them!

I was going to say the same thing. I think I almost entirely wore bootcut as I preferred them to straight cut but I don’t remember wide leg even being an option.

Funnily enough I now prefer straight cut.
