Anyone else struggling with the 90s revival?!

PlumBear · 15/11/2025 20:38

I’m 5ft nothing, quite curvy and the current 90s look just doesn’t suit me - and it didn’t suit me the first time around either! 😂

I know I don’t need to follow fashion and can wear what I like and mostly I do. But I’m really struggling with jeans. I bought a pair of wide leg ones and thought they looked nice until I saw myself in a photo wearing them 🤪

Have any shorties found jeans recently that are flattering and not too dated? Or should I just give up and stick to dresses and boots until this trend ends?

thanks in advance!

I've bypassed the 90s and gone right back to the 70s.
But then, I should have kept the flares i wore in the 90s....because we used to buy them from vintage shops and they were from the 70s, which was closer to the 90s than I am now!

The jeans I have kept, from when I was 16, are more loose fit from Topshop.

Skinnies look good on me, but so do flares. But they're both very different looks. I tend to wear my skinnies if I'm feeling punk. Flares if I'm more mellow.

PlumBear · 16/11/2025 18:54

Love those @fancytoes but probably out of my budget. But I will maybe give flares a go. I think the ones I have are too wide all the way down.

Im only 5ft 2 so only 2 inches taller than you but I love the "mom" fit jeans that asda do i think they look so flattering and I love how they feel and fit on me.

Lollipop81 · 16/11/2025 19:10

I don’t like the baggy baggy jeans, I don’t think they look nice and I’m 5ft 10 and slim. So I have opted for bootcut which I think is a happy medium between skinny’s and wide leg jeans.

fancytoes · 16/11/2025 19:13

I’m newly slim but still a 5ft Apple and these in petite are gorgeous from Reiss. They have similar cut jeans.

The big look I’m seeing on kids is “random thrift shop”
. I think it’s after years of them all looking very samey.
I think wearing “ any old shit you can pull off” is more in than ever, Whereas wide legged, clumpy boots, dry robe etc etc looks way try hard .

Sorica · 16/11/2025 19:17

I remember the wide leg jeans (but with mid / low rise, not high waisted) were a thing in 89/90 when I was 13 with smiley face hoodies.
We were all into Stone Roses, Happy Mondays etc then Happy Hardcore happened when I was 14; so by 1991 it was only the lads in my area who then wore (less) baggy skater jeans for the whole of the 90s while girls went for a more glam or grunge aesthetic depending on music taste.
Jeans for late teens like me from Topshop mid 90s were generally coloured, straight leg but not wide, or Levi 501s, or cheaper copies, never high waist Mom style as only untrendy older women would wear those.
By 1999 it was slim bootcut all the way with the lowest waist possible!
So actually the jeans in fashion now are a bit too 1989 to be 90s!!

Sorica · 16/11/2025 19:19

If I’m honest I hate high waist now as they don’t sit well on my stomach, I prefer a mid rise.

Saysheshe · 16/11/2025 19:20

I'm hating it too. I always felt stumpy and fat in jeans in the 90s. Skinnies suited my short legs. Tried all sorts of styles of jeans and I look terrible in all of them. I am just wearing dresses.

fancytoes · 16/11/2025 19:20

Google ‘kick flare’ jeans. Slim on the things then kick out above the knee.

I cannot understand the skinny jeans thing. I think they look hideous on 99.9% of people. Even Kate Moss looks awful in them.
My sister is one of the few people who looks good in them, I look like somebody squeezed me into a sausage skin several sizes too small and Im by no means fat.
Wide leg jeans look ok in a photo shoot but walking around town with a bit of wind they look like a ship in full sail and sound like it too.
True fashion is about looking great in clothes that suit you....individual style.

You're right about wide leg. They look nice on me in the mirror - they hit my natural waist, and I tuck in a slim-fitting top. Walking in them, swish swish swish like 2 denim binbags - a whole other story. Possibly best illustrated by these images. I do still wear a couple of pairs from Tu but I really have to be in the mood.

I don't mind some wide legged jeans, anything loose TBH. Even those comically baggy ones I'll happily wear.
I'm not a fan of skinny or mom style jeans though, too restrictive.
The closest I'll get is jeggings...you get the look of skinnies but more stretch and no waistband digging in.

Untrendy older women, hey? Ageist bollocks.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/11/2025 21:33

When I was a vaguely alternative teenager in the 80s, 'trendy' was an ultimate insult.

As a five foot nothing size 12-14 (depending on the peri belly!) don't wear wide leg jeans wear flared jeans. I have jeans from next petite range that are so flattering! They are quite long though so wear them with heels, I prefer block heeled boots. River island also have great jeans in petite. If you want to do wide leg stick to trousers. I have gorgeous black ones from pixie girl which are quite flowy. Cords from next and m&s which are gorgeous. Wearing heels always helps but if you can't be bothered try platform trainers or hidden wedge trainers or boots to give a bit of height.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/11/2025 09:12

Apple shaped people usually have great legs so I can imagine kick flare would look great on you OP. I am the hated pear shape so have had to diet 5 stone down to look good in anything.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 17/11/2025 10:38

Another Xer absolutely loving the return of the baggy boot cut jean, even better I share with 19yo Dd 😁

Lastfroginthebox · 17/11/2025 11:54

I think the 90s passed me by while my DC were still pre-school, so I've no idea if current trends are a revival or not. I just wear the stuff I like.

FletchFan · 17/11/2025 12:15

Don't understand the fuss around skinny jeans. They look fine.

Anyway, most people around me, especially the 30 something school mums, are wearing sports leggings and those slip on crocs. I don't see many wearing jeans.

EstherGreenwood63 · 17/11/2025 13:27

I have these in the lighter wash. They are really fabulous. Great quality cotton. Inexpensive. Love 'em.

I mean…. I’m 5ft2.

i do look fat in them. But they are so comfy. So I’m wearing them anyway.

Same. First time round I looked good in them as I was a teenager with a washboard stomach. Now they don’t look ideal but I’m in the DNGAF stage of life.
