Anyone else struggling with the 90s revival?!

PlumBear · 15/11/2025 20:38

I’m 5ft nothing, quite curvy and the current 90s look just doesn’t suit me - and it didn’t suit me the first time around either! 😂

I know I don’t need to follow fashion and can wear what I like and mostly I do. But I’m really struggling with jeans. I bought a pair of wide leg ones and thought they looked nice until I saw myself in a photo wearing them 🤪

Have any shorties found jeans recently that are flattering and not too dated? Or should I just give up and stick to dresses and boots until this trend ends?

thanks in advance!

I love the wide legged jeans look, but being older and fatter second time round has been much harder to pull it off.
I think the secret is to keep trying pairs to find a fit that suits you (which I have been doing for the last 18 months).
I finally found the fatface elise jeans and they fit and look good. Even though I'm a 14/16 the legs aren't too wide - more a baggy/wide straight leg. I only got them a couple of months back and have worn them non stop.
I also like rolled up girlfriend jeans/slight barrel leg.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/11/2025 09:39

I think with any style of Jean you need to try on lots of different ones to find ones that suit you best. I got some very loose wide leg ones from Zara which I think look great. Have you tried a barrel leg OP? I am very short in the leg and they are working for me.

MoominMai · 16/11/2025 09:40

@PlumBear I’m same height and figure as you and I found the skinnies (turned up slightly above ankle) are the most flattering for me. I think bootcut can work as well if you wear them with a high boot heel just to elongate the legs a little.

I’ve tried countless loose fit jeans including the slim mom jeans and though they look great on taller people they just leave me looking (even high waisted) like I have stumps for legs so I’m just sticking to my skinny jeans with slouchy or box style jumpers for the winter and T-shirts or boho style blouses for the summer. At 52, can’t be doing with caring any longer what the rest of the world is up to!

I’ve only found that to be an issue if I pair them with converse. And wide legs are no different if you’re worried about wet trousers.

Basically, skinnies were just tights you could wear without a skirt.

Anything with a wide leg feels yuck in wet weather. Converse kill my feet so I never wear those.

dudsville · 16/11/2025 11:19

I've been scrolling images of 90s fashion and was just reminded about the freddy kruger jumper!

dudsville · 16/11/2025 11:21

And, ahhh, the plaid shirt worn as a belt.

PlumBear · 16/11/2025 12:17

@ShowOfHands No, I’m not really a frequent shopper or fashion follower. I’ve been pregnant or breastfeeding for most of the last 7 years so just trying to work out what works for me now. Not easy when you’re very short!

I’ve not tried them, no - that’s a good suggestion, thanks!

I remember the very wide Stone Roses type jeans from the very end of the 80s into early 90s but they were flared - and some were so wide flares that they even covered your whole shoe. We called those people and the music ‘baggy’, didn’t we?

I agree that the style wasn’t like today’s wide leg jeans.

Yes, I was a baggy jean wearer in the 90s and I know the wide leg style popular atm aren’t the same but they are similar. Especially when you’re very short. It’s just a whole lot of heavy, soggy fabric that swamps my frame!

My thoughts too. Also “What 90s revival?” You don’t have to buy in to all the latest fashion trends you know. What a complete
waste of head space.

Edited

@Notmyreality Sorry, I thought I was on the style and beauty board!?
I’ve been pregnant / breastfeeding for the last 7 years. My body has changed and I need some new clothes. I’m not finding the current style of jeans flattering and was asking for some advice.

hope that’s ok with you and @ShowOfHands

Excellent, more for me then!

From what I can see it's mostly Millenials who are clinging to the skinnies. It's hard when the staple fashion item from your younger years are no longer the thing. Whereas as a Gen X I'm flipping delighted that the loose-fit look is back in because I feel like I'm in my 20s again.

I never got on with skinnies just because I found them so uncomfortable at the time, but they do look incredibly dated now.

I still wear skinnies in the winter, they are the only jeans you can tuck into boots, and when you live rurally you definitely need boots! I sometimes wear wide leg cropped jeans with chunky ankle boots, but I can’t abide jeans that drag on the ground especially in the wet!

I'm not sure what the motivation behind your comment was tbh, but I don't think there's ever been a converse shortage.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 16/11/2025 14:47

I got some nice ones in mint velvet, but I have a trouser version from Uniqlo which I like too.

WheresBillGrundyNow · 16/11/2025 15:01

I may be wrong but aren’t the 90s revival stuff long gone out of fashion now? Most of what I see (at least on younger/ fashionable types) is well into 2000s revival. Flared leggings/ jeans, skirts over jeans, juicy couture velour joggers, very low slung jeans, cargo pants, camo prints, holographic makeup and accessories…
Or are you only talking about jeans?
Even so, I’d imagine there’ll be increasing amounts of skinny jeans/ baggy cargo bottoms in shops very soon.
The only thing being, people in general are bigger than they were in the 2000s. Maybe 80s/ 90s style jeans will just stay a staple because of comfort/ practicality 🤷‍♀️

pawsatively · 16/11/2025 15:06

Yes! I can’t do the wide leg jeans. I’ve ordered and returned so many pairs! I’m a size 12/14 and 5’2 and they just look gigantic on my legs. Big and baggy round my thighs and drowning my feet. Even petite ones are really really wide, like clown trousers. I need a high waist and straight leg or mom jean. I’m loathe to part with my mom jeans just because some 20 year olds say they are out of fashion.

Handeyethingyowl · 16/11/2025 15:22

Straight cut levis were what we wore mid-90s. Then flared jeans/leggings, then bootcut. I did have some wide legged black trousers but not jeans. Not that I was a beacon of fashion. In the early 00s I had some wide-legged and bootcut Lees. Plus straight-leg rolled up.

Basically wear what you like.

Apologies, I am having a bit of fun with you. What motivation were you imagining?

No idea, hence my comment. I like Converse to look at but not to wear, not enough support.

Gettingbysomehow · 16/11/2025 16:48

I cannot understand the skinny jeans thing. I think they look hideous on 99.9% of people. Even Kate Moss looks awful in them.
My sister is one of the few people who looks good in them, I look like somebody squeezed me into a sausage skin several sizes too small and Im by no means fat.
Wide leg jeans look ok in a photo shoot but walking around town with a bit of wind they look like a ship in full sail and sound like it too.
True fashion is about looking great in clothes that suit you....individual style.

Bikergran · 16/11/2025 17:52

M&S Sienna jeans. Best look for my short rounded frame.

ClassicalQueen · 16/11/2025 18:07

You will have to drag my straight, slim leg jeans out of my cold dead hands. I hate the baggy style.

Lastfroginthebox · 16/11/2025 18:16

I've bought some wide leg trousers which are comfortable and quite warm as they are a soft, thick material. I won't buy wide leg jeans though - they are too heavy and I think jeans are not warm enough in winter. I find that thick tights and a skirt and boots is a warmer combination, and more comfortable than jeans.
