I cant help but think of what id have worn in the 90s and i certainly cabt pull that off any more .

Going to a fairly casual party, and cant help but feel the dresses i have will be too much.

So, what are "dressy" jeans abd a nice top, is it still a thing?

(I dont get out often, can you tell....)

Ps - late 40s, 5ft 7, size 14

Don’t bother with the jeans

this time of year, jumper dress, black tights, so amazing black boots

VenusClapTrap · 14/11/2025 13:33

I agree jumper dresses are perfect in this scenario. The ‘jeans and a nice top’ thing can look dated.

I recently bought this one and have found it very useful.

My go to is dressy black trousers and a nice top

AmberSpyware · 14/11/2025 14:01

I would say the preference is for ‘nice jeans/trousers and a top now

Unless you are actively wearing a high trend shaped top (remember the waistcoat shaped fitted tops of summer) it can look quite dated.

I’d wear a modern jean shape that suits you, a flattering basic top and then dress up with jewellery, or a neck scarf, or earrings- whatever works

Then for footwear- whatever. If I wanted to feel dressy I’d wear heeled boots or a pair of suede trainers

Wide-legged trousers and silk shirt?

SwallowsandAmazonians · 14/11/2025 14:26

Sequin miniskirt and a black jumper if it's around Christmas time. Black tights and flat shoes.

Or yes a jumper dress or shirt dress.

It means you forget looking backwards and go straight to

& Other Stories

for styling inspiration. Their re-brand is epic and makes other high st shops look leaden footed.
