I have in my possession a beautiful suede trench coat.

so beautiful that I have not yet dared to wear it in case of spills / smudges

I know suede protector exists, but I am nervous to use it in case the effect is uneven

has anyone used the spray stuff on a big item like a coat?

Do companies do it professionally??

any help
much appreciated …

Watching with interest as I have two beautiful suede skirts I am also nervous about wearing due to the fact I can’t go a day without spilling something down myself!

I treat everything at home. But, yes, leather specialists will proof them for you. Johnson's do it, I believe, and there's a firm called Ace of Suedes.

Can I ask what you use, GarlicHound?

On shoes I use any old suede=friendly waterproofing spray. I treat my jacket with Nikwax, which you sponge on after wetting the garment. I can't get to all the nooks and crannies with spray.

If your coat's really expensive, I'd say it's worth investing a further £30 or so to have it done professionally. They probably do use the same products, but are experienced and insured! If doing it yourself, test a little-seen patch first to make sure you're comfortable with the results.

I have a suede jacket (not a trench though) and I did spray it with a basic suede protector spray. Do it outside as it's quite strong smelling.

But now that I have worn it in, it looks so much nicer than it did new. I think with suede, it looks better with the lived in look.

Get a suede brush and then give it a brush every now and then after wearing it. If you spill something on it, just pat it off with a damp (not wet) cloth and brush it when it's dried.

Also brush off the collar as foundation (if you wear it) can get on it. Or wear a light scarf to protect the collar..

Thanks all

Just got some suede bootssao will practice on them. If that goes well, will attack the coat ...
