I’d like a new purse …

AGreenWitch · 08/11/2025 12:49

That’s it really! Nice quality large leather purse up to £250.

My current purse is Aspinal but I fancy a change, I’ve seen this one I like at Strathberry but haven’t bought from them before. Anyone know what the brand is like, is it like an Aspinal equivalent quality wise?

Any other suggestions welcome

Strathberry - Large Melville Street Wallet - Black

It’s a bit tired @Mintyt . I also find that the lining wears out in Aspinal purses before the purse, hence wanting a new one.

Agree. It's a bit old lady. Prefer the new one.

AGreenWitch · 09/11/2025 13:33

Ha ha @waffleyversatile1.

Do you think the Strathberry is old lady @ozarina ? I really loved the contrasting leather interior on the black one. Just the clasp I couldn’t get my head round.

After having all my card details stolen and used by someone, I now use an rfid wallet. Love looking at standard wallets still though. Just can't be bothered with the hassle.

Birdsongsinging · 09/11/2025 14:16

Oh thats funny I just was coming on to say thanks to this thread I have now just spent £150 and part of it was on an RFID purse / wallet - I didn't know what RFID meant but liked the look of it!

Love the Strathberry!

AGreenWitch · 09/11/2025 16:48

Oh 🤣. I just don’t think there’s a huge amount of longevity guaranteed in the clasp.

I have a Strathberry purse and a small handbag. I really rate the quality of the leader. I am not gentle with my stuff AT ALL - just throwing it in the bottom of a big back, rattling around with lots of other junk, and, after two years, both leather and hardware look brand-new. I also like the way the hardware feels heavy when you open and close it. It feels good quality.

hemelene · 09/11/2025 18:14

I haven't found anything to rival Aspinals for purses and wallets tbh. I moved away from a purse though, and use a combination of the Mayfair wallet and the slim credit card holder.

Mumwithbaggage · 09/11/2025 18:25

I love your Aspinal choice - normally Strathberry looks nice when I see it on here but the clasp is too big and the lining would get dirty very easily.

I have a lovely Smythson purse but as I hardly ever use cash I just have my Aspinal card case I was bought for my birthday and keep a few notes in the front flap of my middle aged mum phone case.

AGreenWitch · 09/11/2025 19:01

Thank you, I will need to buy a separate cardholder but I really don’t like the gold shield crest on some of the newer Aspinal stuff. I’m clearly 😩 fussy. Everything that would do in the sane, fig, colour has the crest.

I miss using purses but I just don't need one anymore 😥

Viviennemary · 09/11/2025 19:14

I think its considered a very good brand. But £180 for a purse. That's very expensive.

ozarina · 09/11/2025 21:13

After all this I wouldn't pay that much for a purse and then buy a cardholder as well 🤷‍♀️ my phone does it all for me now.

How long does your purse last for.
Im still using my one from Top Shop that I bought when my kids were little, They are nearly 30 now!!! 😆 🤣 😂

AGreenWitch · 10/11/2025 06:34

8-10 years.

Separate cardholder required because I have a lot of cards! Simple as that really. I don’t overstuff my purse, once the leather has stretched it is stretched for good.

Get apps on your phone 😂

Metropolitayne · 10/11/2025 13:24

Glad you found a better incarnation of what you liked best @AGreenWitch, it's always pleasing when they bring out an improved version and it genuinely is improved (all too often a 'new improved' version is worse than the original!)

The best purse I ever had for longevity was a Tula one which was a 21st birthday gift from my aunt in 1996. I was using that into my forties. I have a Chanel purse and that's bomb proof but I wouldn't buy at today's prices. Currently using a Longchamp for everyday, I picked it up at Bicester for £160. Previous to that I was using a John Lewis one but the compartments were all in the wrong place and it drove me mad. The stress of small annoyances, to quote Victoria Wood!

AGreenWitch · 11/11/2025 06:12

@Metropolitayne I know what you mean re today’s prices. I’ve got a lot of expensive handbags (Loewe, Mulberry, Gucci etc) which I love, but I definitely wouldn’t buy again in 2025. Yes 🤣 to Victoria Wood.

I like nice quality leather and craftsmanship, the label is less important to me these days. That’s why I limited my budget to £250.

@ozarina I’ve got loads of cards without apps, NT, English Heritage, HHA, local memberships, institute memberships, ID cards, loads. I don’t mind having them in a separate holder.

Metropolitayne · 11/11/2025 07:29

@AGreenWitch Prices are ridiculous. My Chanel 2.55s are insured for £10k each as that’s what it would cost to re-purchase them. Madness.

I’m the same with leather. I had some John Lewis own brand knee high boots 20+ years ago & they were the best leather I’ve ever known. Far better than known brands. If you’re ever in Paris try Louise Carmen, her leather goods are fabulous & everything is made to order & completed right in front of you.

If I exhale re: the price of Chanel, Hermes et al with enough gusto do you think it would be enough to blow the froth off a Horlicks two tables away? 😉 (RIP Pat Routledge, surely one of the best at bringing Vic Wood’s characters to life)

CharlotteCChapel · 11/11/2025 08:22

My purse came from TKMaxx, id never heard of the brand but when I googled it, it said that they make purses for high end brands ,not designer. It's wearing well.

You need to come into 2025 😂 I've got a couple of those and they are digital now!

AGreenWitch · 11/11/2025 13:43

You're assuming I want to be connected to my phone at all times @ozarina , I don't.

Anyway, NT don't have a digital card that issues a parking ticket, HHA expects you to have a physical card, etc., etc.. My university expects you to show a card, local stateley home - the same, institutes - the same. Local book shop, coffee shop etc, physical cards only.

People want different things. I'm very happy with a separate cardholder, I just want one with a suede lining.

i was going to start a thread asking this - did you treat / protect your bag before using? Mines still in the box 😆. Sorry to hijack OP

Sorry for late response. Ive only just seen this post. No i haven't treated it, its the midi croc leather in burgundy. But I have asked for a bag liner from Handbag Angels for Christmas to protect the inside.
