Grey hair

I am 46. I used to have very dark (almost black) hair but started to go grey very young. Noticing strands in my teens. Obviously as I got older there were more and I started dyeing ut when I was probably early 20s. As time went on my roots got more and more obvious so I had to dye it every 3 weeks or so which was a nightmare. So I gave up in lockdown. I've been grown out salt and pepper for a few years now but I dont think I like it!
I do think it makes me look older - at least from the back. I think im pretty lucky with my skin and I dress reasonably fashionably which helps. A lot of my colleagues are MUCH younger and I have had a couple of them seem to be genuinely shocked when I've told them my age. Saying that I 'rock'grey hair and they thought I was younger. I do think though that's less because of me looking young and more them sort of thinking their colleagues are roughly their age.
So my questions are:
Do you think grey hair gives an 'old lady vibe'
And also is there a way I could colour it to make me look younger or even 'warmer'as I used to.be an autumn colouring, without having to retouch every 3 weeks or so. I just can't handle that sort of commitment or cost.
And if you got that far then thank you!

I am 60 and have let my grey grow out. I am about 50% grey. I don't mind it, actually. It is quite sparkly, like highlights. It suits my complexion better than when it was dyed, strangely enough. I got sick of dying it and wouldn't go back now.

I don't think I look any older than my friends who are still dying. But if I do, so what.

Dyeing, not dying!😱

Grey hair always makes people look older IMO. Always. The question is whether you care enough about looking younger to dye your hair every few weeks? If no then go for it. But dont kid yourself- grey hair is aging.

It’s not aging for me. I look my age. And I didn’t look much younger with dyed brown hair (similar to my original colour).

Irenesortof · 07/11/2025 15:29

What about henna? Lots of colours all of them warm, and good for condition.

Spottyskunk · 07/11/2025 15:33

I decided to grow my grey out during covid. I also realised that I would need to keep it well cut and styled to avoid the 'don't give a shit how I look' vibe. I'm 61, wear fashionable but stylish clothes and feel quite happy. The endless hair dying was wearing me out and because I was no longer sure what my natural colour was, I suspect I was using the wrong colour for my mature skin tone. I did ask my hairdresser about temporary dyes but she didn't recommend them as they aren't temporary really and I would end up back where I was.

That’s sad - you’ll be stuck in an expensive and time consuming cycle of always having to cover your roots every couple of weeks - all because of attitudes like yours.

men aren’t judged as harshly when the go grey.

Good luck!

If the poster has the time and money - what's the problem?

Exactly, who cares? Women with dyed hair don't look any younger after a certain age they just look the same age with dyed hair.
I say this as a grey person with blonde highlights! I did grow all my grey in, but it had a tendency to oxidise and go yellowy, so highlights keep it balanced and clean looking. I still look grey, just sorting of blonde grey. I only have quarter head if highlights, under my parting and round my face.

Yes, after a certain age but not in their 40s or 50s.

A 70 year old with jet black dyed hair will look the same age as a 70 year old with naturally grey hair. However grey hair when you're much younger than that is aging and I've never seen it on anyone where it isn't (including photos posted on threads like this)

foxlover47 · 07/11/2025 15:49

I have had greys since I had my fist child at 21 , I was 100% grey according to my old hairdresser at 35 so I went blonde to try and blend it , I’m naturally mousy coloured but honestly blonde hair ( always a ashy colour they choose ) makes me look so worn out and I got called elderly looking due to my colour! I mean I am 51 I don’t look in my 30s lol.
so I’ve gone back to brunette and yes I’m still colouring the roots three weekly but I feel it does warm up my skin a lot and looks better in photos

I'm in my 40's. I suppose it's a first impressions thing, grey hair = older. Although when I had fully grey hair a few young people assumed I had dyed it that way (remember when celebs briefly had grey hair??)

Sexentric · 07/11/2025 16:56

Interesting. Id say my hair is similar to Andie McDowell's. And my colouring generally actually. I wouldn't mind going blonde because that's a warmer colour than grey - also I stuck my photo into AI to.see what id look like blonde and it made me look like Shakira (I really don't so thanks for that ChatGPT!) So I think i could pull off blonde but I'm not sure that would hide the regrowth much better than brown dye either.

I'm 44 and have very dark brown hair, and am normally ok about my ever-increasing greys, but now I am becoming more grey it is worrying me just how ageing it might be.

I agree about it having that old lady look, and I hate how my mum points this out about it becoming ageing. She's dyed her hair for years though, and probably has spent a fortune on dye 😅

No advice, just solidarity.

I use a professional Demi glaze that I buy off Amazon with a 1.9 developer. It blends all my greys/old bleach/ natural hair together making it look like less old lady and more intentional. My hair is in much better condition now than when I used to bleach it every 4-6 weeks.

Be interested to know what product you buy

thanks

Agree. My hair is now silver and I don’t care what age people think I am. I am absolutely certain, though, that dyeing my hair back to its original colour ( very dark brown) would not make me look younger.

ShanghaiDiva · 07/11/2025 20:09

This is my silver hair.

Pancakeorcrepe · 07/11/2025 06:22

@ImthatBoleyngirl at least read your own messages. Why do you think men tend to “look good” with grey hair and women look older? It is purely societal expectations. You have drank the kool aid and don’t even seem to have a modicum of awareness of how far into the tunnel you’ve gone

It's my opinion. I think women with grey hair tend to look older.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 08/11/2025 00:27

rockwater · 07/11/2025 07:28

Personally, I have never seen anyone with grey hair who I did not assume was older than they were. I just think it's aging and it's not just due to the association of grey hair with age. I think grey is a very harsh, flat colour against someone's face for all skin tones -eg if you have olive/dark skin it clashes with it and makes it more sallow and if you have pale skin it just washes you out completely and makes your entire visage look greyish. Its just not a flattering colour in my opinion.

I also had dark hair like you and have gone a honey/caramel blonde. I didnt think it would suit me at all but it looks great and I've never had so many random compliments. I would try out an app that changes your hair colour first - you can upload a photo and then you can really see what it looks like- you might be surprised by what suits you.

I completely agree with you!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 08/11/2025 00:33

Have you considered getting your hair cut @ShanghaiDiva?

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 08/11/2025 08:16

Completely agree @ImthatBoleyngirl men do look better with grey hair - who cares what 'society expects' 😂

MrsLizzieDarcy · 08/11/2025 08:21

I'm 55 and am grey all over. I'm quite lucky that mine is very salt and pepper - I went through the having blonde highlights phase for a few years to blend them but it wrecked the condition of my hair and I stopped. I have got a very modern short cut though and go every 6 weeks to keep the shape (think Tamsin Greig style). Costs me a fortune but a bob was very aging on me.

Just be wary of colour shampoo - I used the Plantur 39 anti grey and it made my hair orange. Took weeks to strip it out using really harsh shampoos.

Branleuse · 08/11/2025 08:23

I started dying my hair blonde because it blends in the grey regrowth a lot better than brown. I am completely grey underneath now, but i just dont like grey hair that much. I think it is really harsh looking , like black hair is.

I think ill dye my hair forever. Even if i was in a home, i think id at least want a pink rinse.

I'm so sorry, I truly wasn't being insulting!

I just think that long hair on older women ages them. But that's my personal opinion, and I wasn't trying to be nasty!!

Jesus - l have the temerity to have both long hair and silver hair. There really is no hope for me..

I do think grey hair gives an old lady vibe am sorry. I know it’s kind of ‘in’ just now but I would be reaching for the dye bottle! And will do when my own hair starts greying really bad

Well I started to go grey in my teens & by the time I got married aged 23 was pure white. Don’t think I looked like Bride of Frankenstein. People used to ask where I got the colour done!

For someone who wasn’t trying to be insulting you succeeded pretty well….
