Seasalt? Yay or nay?

Since I now work exclusively from home, I've gradually drifted (plummeted) from smart work dress everyday to living in leggings.

I'm not ancient, but not a bright young thing either.

I've been looking for some dresses that are comfy for daily wear but also look a bit nicer than the leggings sweater combo I've sunk into.

I've come across Seasalt and have seen a few dresses on there that I like BUT I'm worried they're a bit grannyish. I genuinely can't tell what's OK anymore.

Are Seasalt generally for the older woman? I'd shop elsewhere if the stuff was in my price bracket, but Next et al don't have a lot that I've liked recently.

Their coats are excellent. Truly water and windproof. Although probably not that important when you're WFH! They're a B Corp retailer if that's important to you too. I do find their sizing can be quite varied and the organic cotton t shirts are good but can shrink a bit (but that's an organic cotton issue ime).

Personally I find Seasalt stuff only caters for a certain shape. It's fine if you have wide shoulders and/or big boobs, but the stuff hangs and gapes if you have a narrow frame and are flat chested. All their tops looks like a sack on me, same as White Stuff.

Plus their prints are a bit predictable and often ugly. The shape of the skirts I often find triangular. Somehow I look awful in all their stuff, so yeah, not a fan.

I’m quite narrow across shoulders and I don’t find them too bad

i bought my son in law a half zip fleece thing and he really liked it

and agree they are mainly natural fabrics

not keen on Cos or Toast

Seasalt are very narrow at the shoulder - I'm a size 12 but broad shouldered, in their woven dresses I need to size up to a 16 for shoulder width. I also find a lot of their coats and dresses are skimpy on the hip for me. They do cut for apple shapes.

ZebLab · 27/10/2025 17:34

I’m an 🍏! :)

I’m more hourglass (or I was) 😂

I like sea salt Jersey dresses, they're warm on cooler days. I can wash, dry, wear without ironing. Some patterns are not for me but others are. I get them as presents from daughter who knows what I like.

They're a change from trousers and tops.

I have several , one is black with autumnal kind of small print flowers ( rusty oranges and creams etc) I have worn it to death - over leggings, biker boots - I’m 63 and I asked my very trendy all saints wearing 61 year old H if I looked frumpy and he says definitely not-

Ariela · 27/10/2025 17:51

I have gone off Seasalt, might be since they closed their Bracknell shop.
I'm more into Weird Fish and Crew (Henley-on-Thames) this year, also just ordered a lovely jacket from Joe Browns and wish I had a bottomless credit card for the other stuff that floated in and out of my basket.

Crikeyalmighty · 27/10/2025 18:24

@Ariela I really like Joe browns -have a few nice bits from them that I’m always complimented on

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 27/10/2025 18:42

I'm some sort of an hourglass shape also @suburburban , albeit a small busted long waisted one.

Fairyvocals · 27/10/2025 18:51

I’m a narrow-shouldered hourglass and their cuts generally work for me.

I'm actually a granny too, my friend just didn't think I needed to dress like one.

Surely as a granny, whatever you wear makes you dressed like a granny?

Yes I’m long waisted too hence their trousers not working.😀

OhDear111 · 27/10/2025 19:17

@Fairyvocals I don’t buy acrylic. Poetry are not acrylic fabrics for example. I’m with you on ditsy florals. I think velvet trousers etc is ok for winter at ROH but the leaves and geometrics? Not for me - I’d much rather wear a silk shirt.

Same 🙄 I struggle with trousers more than anything else.

sugarapplelane · 27/10/2025 19:24

I have a couple of pairs of their checked Pj’s, a lovely plain shirt and a pair of cord trousers. All great quality.
But I find their patterns frumpy. They are too busy so make the dumpy dumpier.
If you stick to block colours then they are great

That’s absolutely fair enough - it’s just a matter of taste. I tend to go there straight from work, so I’m in whatever I‘ve been wearing all day. I really don’t think there’s a dress code or a particular approved look at the ROH, though. I love people-watching there as the styles are so varied.

i struggle buying trousers anyway

I wear m&s jeans purely for dog walking and I like their wide leg linen trousers for summer. I'm more of a dress wearer these days and it's simply because of my struggle to find trousers that fit well.

justasking111 · 27/10/2025 19:41

My friend wears mens trousers because she is long waisted. Next did high waisted some years ago. Absolutely brilliant.

So glad low rise are out. It is easier atm

I used to find original Principles ok. I’m really funny about trousers

I can imagine that working well if you're more of a rectangle or athletic shape and long in the leg; I used to have a tall friend who wore mens jeans. I suspect my waist to hip ratio would be too great though, and I'm also short legged.

MovingBird123 · 27/10/2025 20:11

I love everything n the Seasalt window, but whenever I enter the shop I feel conspicuously young - usually the only one without white hair.

Wear whatever makes you feel good.

MoreRabbit · 27/10/2025 20:40

I have a love/hate relationship with Seasalt. Generally I dislike brands with very identifiable clothes, and I find that probably 60% of Seasalt stuff is easily identifiable, but it does some really excellent linen summer trousers, knitwear and cords. And some cracking coats! I am very fussy about coats but theirs for me are second only to Didriksons for quality and warmth/waterproofness. I also really like their sleeveless linen boxy tops.

It's just occured to me that "frumpy" might comes from "frum", a Yiddish word for very observant/orthodox Jews (primarily women) in long dark skirts, wigs/head coverings etc.

I think last time I went there I was wearing jeans and a T shirt!

I’ve just had a look at Poetry as I’m always interested in places I hadn’t heard of offering natural fabrics. I think I prefer Seasalt prints to this, which looks as though it’s been splashed with mud and needs a turn through the washing machine

I wear a lot of Seasalt Breton style t shirts and their Waterdance trousers. They wash and dry like a dream. I used to wear some of their dresses to work.
I am a granny but try to dress to suit what I’m doing rather than what I am. Rohan, Seasalt, Boden, M &S, Wyse, Me&Em, Baukjen, Cefinn - I wear them all.
