Too scruffy for the Connaught…

Title describes me perfectly. Maybe not scruffy but never dressed up…I just somehow never looked groomed even when I used to try, so now I don’t try!

I wear cargoes or jeans, t-shirts or jumpers and birkies or boots. That’s it. I don’t like dresses and skirts. I’m 58, short and wide (size 18 bottom and 20 top) with a big bust. I am proportionate, carrying my weight all over, so I can’t dress to hide a larger stomach while showing off my great legs - if you see what I mean.

Invited to the Connaught for lunch and, while I’ve been to lovely hotels before and am also aware that I don’t need to dress up hugely, I’m struggling for what to wear.

Appreciate all advice and suggestions. Links gratefully received.

Black trousers are not London any more at all unless you’re on shift in Tesco or a bus driver.

They look like the bottom half of a uniform these days unless they’re insanely expensive Loro Piano.

Navy blue is fine if you must wear dark trousers, but you’d be better off in a dress, London women do them a lot.

I think you win the internet today 😂😂😂

I live just outside London, and when I’m in, which is often, I see a lot of black trousers, I see a huge variety of everything actually.

my guess is you aren’t actually from or near London, are you?

Those diarrhoea coloured knitted trousers 😱. Seriously, who would wear them?

Can you imagine wearing those in the UK. Getting caught in the inevitable rain shower and having shit coloured wet wool clinging to your legs. And paying a couple of grand for the privilege. Mind blown

As someone who does eat in lovely restaurants, you do have to elevate yourself a bit for the surroundings. I’m assuming it’s not Helene Darroze. There’s no dress code for lunch at Jean Georges but I really would not wear a knitted top. Too hot! A silk or floaty top is better and black trousers are easy. Ankle boots that aren’t clumpy are easy. Nothing wrong with smart trainers by the way! Everyone will see your top though so make that a good choice. Smart wide dark wash jeans are also ok. Definitely not cargos or light wash ripped jeans! The main thing is hair, make up and jewellery: all this elevates a simple look.

Have fun.

@XiCi my overriding memory of camels is that they smell. I was only thinking earlier about the smell of wet camel wool joggers.

@AGreenWitch 😂😂😂

I’m going to a ‘nice’ London restaurant for lunch tomorrow. I’ve opted for dark denim slim flares, a silk blouse and heeled suede boots. I feel nice but relaxed in this and am hoping that once I’ve got red lipstick on, it’ll feel dressed up enough without being too much.

@AGreenWitch There’s “nice” which is casual like Riverside Cafe, and “nice” that’s The Ritz. People tend to dress up a bit for The Ritz. At many others, there’s no great need as smart casual is normal.
