Too scruffy for the Connaught…

MarshmallowValentine · 21/10/2025 14:30

Title describes me perfectly. Maybe not scruffy but never dressed up…I just somehow never looked groomed even when I used to try, so now I don’t try!

I wear cargoes or jeans, t-shirts or jumpers and birkies or boots. That’s it. I don’t like dresses and skirts. I’m 58, short and wide (size 18 bottom and 20 top) with a big bust. I am proportionate, carrying my weight all over, so I can’t dress to hide a larger stomach while showing off my great legs - if you see what I mean.

Invited to the Connaught for lunch and, while I’ve been to lovely hotels before and am also aware that I don’t need to dress up hugely, I’m struggling for what to wear.

Appreciate all advice and suggestions. Links gratefully received.

Black trousers are not London any more at all unless you’re on shift in Tesco or a bus driver.

They look like the bottom half of a uniform these days unless they’re insanely expensive Loro Piano.

Navy blue is fine if you must wear dark trousers, but you’d be better off in a dress, London women do them a lot.

🤣🤣🤣🙄

Dearie me!

WildCherryBlossom · 25/10/2025 07:07

I would wear wide leg trousers top in black or navy and pop a One Hundred Stars kaftan over the top. They are lovely fabrics and make a simple top and trousers outfit feel wafty and elegant.

Too scruffy for the Connaught…

@CoffeeCantata I was a size 18 and found well fitting slim cut trousers quite flattering, I had to try on umpteen brands and may have even gone up a size in some but they flattered. It is all about the fit/cut.

Really? Not in my London world.

Unless they’re from here, apparently. You have to whip your trews off at Watford so they can check your label before you travel any further.

Wow 😮. Look at these hideous things.

I can guarantee that we would not allow you through the Watford guard line (heading north of course) with those on.

GirtyPlunder · 25/10/2025 07:37

Wear all black, dress, trousers and top, whatever you have that you like and feel comfortable in. Then maybe a scarf or shoes with a contrast - or big earrings, just one thing that stands out as different from the rest.

I hope the lunch is worth it and the food delicious.

The shitty brown cuffed ones are particularly offensive.

I think (as with so many situations) size alone is not very useful. If you’re tall and a size 14 that gives you a lot more scope. I’m not particularly!

I think the delicious phrase ‘cigarette trousers’ just makes me very envious 😄.

I’m a hobbit. They’re fine. Too often, we create unnecessary rules for ourselves.

AGreenWitch · 25/10/2025 08:42

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie 😂, I read the care instructions …. never wear them two days in a row, that’s me out then, when I wfh I pride myself on wearing the same jeans for three days barring spillages.

Also the washing instructions, I guess you’d have staff if you’d bought those trousers.

Wildgoat · 25/10/2025 08:54

Some of these suggestions. That asos thing, I am trying to imagine anyone wearing it, never mind a woman who is a size 18/20 and knocking on 60. And don’t get me started on the op saying I don’t like dresses or skirts, so folks saying hey how about this dress, or a denim skirt to the Connaught.😂😂😂

op, I’d also go wide leg flowy trousers, a good top, silk is always a good shout and a blazer on top with some loafers or shoes you feel comfortable in.

Staff maybe, but style and a brain? Nope. £8000 for shit coloured trousers. You’d have to be out of your fucking mind.

Nobody wears black trousers in London? I must’ve been in a different London last week then because loads of people - including me- were wearing them. In my case my lovely new wide leg cords.

I agree with the PP who said this thread is hilarious. S&B at its finest! I hope the op has found something suitable.

Suuudohnym · 25/10/2025 09:26

If it helps, I went there for the first time the other day and was planning on getting quite dressed up - nice dress and heels. Until I heard that the rest of my party were going smart/casual. So glad I dressed down a little!

Other people there (not in my party) were wearing everything from jeans to full-length silk gowns.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/10/2025 03:14

God forbid you end up looking like a bus driver.

London threads always make me laugh, but, 'Nobody wears black trousers in London' is priceless.

I was just thinking the same. Had a proper lol at that one!
I suppose its a bit of a variation of the usual stock response of 'just wear what you want, nobody dresses up in London' though 🤣

0906795m · 25/10/2025 09:57

How about straight leg jeans with loafers/boots, a satin or silk cami and a blazer or cardigan over the top?

Screamingabdabz · 25/10/2025 10:11

Hi op the best outfit I’ve got for this sort of thing is a very plain black jersey long sleeve flare dress (think it was £20 from mango) and I wear it with black suede knee boots and a 100 stars kimono over the top. I get compliments every time. You could do a similar thing with black trousers, simple slash neck top from M&S and nice jewellery. Have a lovely time!

ElizabethVonArnim · 25/10/2025 10:25

I think that a lot of people are missing the point, which is that it is a really great restaurant. I’d start from the need for a soft waistband and go from there.

Florencesndzebedee · 25/10/2025 10:34

Similar size to me. I wear a Phase Eight Becca dress in Black or dark Green but they have burgundy one too. It has a slightly batwing top so not tight around the bust, the fabric hangs loose around the stomach and has a pencil skirt bottom so nice for hip curve. Not too short, just around above knee. I wear it with black tights, black flats and add a statement necklace and earrings. It also looks good with tan knee high boots and I would imagine kitten heels would work too but I don’t wear heels. Nice hair and make up. It’s a comfortable outfit.

Phase Eight also have a slight batwing (not too) sparkly top which would look nice with a pencil skirt or cigarette type pant and black knee highs and flat black loafers. You wouldn’t need a necklace but could wear sparkly earrings with this. Good coverage around the stomach but not too long.

It’s such bollocks. Whenever I go, and I do so frequently, I always see a real mixture - from a hoodie and a cap in a high end restaurant to the highest heels I’ve ever seen and sequin gowns at the theatre.

Nearly eight grand for a pair of knitted trackies??? They can’t be serious.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

AGreenWitch · 25/10/2025 15:42

Just about as serious as the claim that only bus drivers and people who work in Tesco wear black trousers @FlatWhiteExtraHot 🤣.

Not just any old trackies though, made from 🐪 matter, I say matter as I’ve no idea how you might knit with 🐫 hair. Is it a bit like a llama, do they get sheared? No idea.

cupfinalchaos · 25/10/2025 17:23

Is it Jean George at the Connaught or the other one? In London now you can get away with jeans for lunch with a fab blazer and lovely bag.

continuo · 26/10/2025 01:05

Grin

It's mainly people who move to London and need to be very London about London who say silly things like this.

Pinkfreedom · 26/10/2025 02:22

Alternatively check out YouTube reviews of the restaurant to see what other diners are wearing.

I hope you have a lovely time.
