Frizzy hair help!!

Pugwash2005 · 16/10/2025 20:58

I’m in my 50’s and my hair has gone from glossy to frizzy no matter what products I try. I’ve tried olaplex and many a frizz ease type product. I have an allergy to PPD so have to use a semi-permanent hair colour which slightly improves the texture for a few days. Any advice would be appreciated

I'm thinking:
product build-up (styling products, but too frequent deep conditioning as well)
dryness (happens with age)
over coloured/processed
dry from too frequent heat-styling
heat styling over product on previously styled hair
poor diet/nutrition deficiency
illness

Could be any single reason or combo of reasons
Try process of elimination

Do you want products etc or what not to do?
I’ve got frizzy curly hair which I also bleach, blow dry and occasionally straighten. It’s always been very dry. I’d recommend HRT for hormones. I also take a Biotin supplement and fish and starflower oils every evening.
Regarding products: I use the Olaplex bonding prewash, any gentle shampoo (a small amount which I put on my scalp only), three minute miracle conditioner and L’Oreal Elvive leave in cream. I try to not fully blow dry my hair but leave it to semi air dry.

Thanks I’m willing to try anything. I’m past HRT as post menopause but I’ve put elvive on my shopping list. I eat a healthy diet but maybe some fish oils would help ill get some.

I think its actually the grey hairs. They are much coarser then my 'normal' fine hair that lies smooth and the more I get the more frizzy my hair appears. If I use a straightener (rare) I notice all the shorter grey hairs just standing up on the top of my hair like I've been rubbing a balloon on them!

I use Bumble and Bumble primer spray oil-has made a big difference to my post menopausal hair. Also growing out my old fringe has had a huge effect on its appearance. No frizzy layers which jump up.

What works for me and my menopausal frizz is:

  1. L'oreal Elvive exceptional oil shampoo and conditioner
  2. Squirt of argan oil combed through when wet.
  3. Lee Stafford heat protecting shine mist
  4. dry my wet hair (must be wet, if I leave it to dry naturally it frizzes) with my ionic hairdryer (bought for about £30 on Amazon - best one ever)
  5. style with the Babyliss big hair (doesn't give big hair, just smooth hair)
  6. final light spray with Lee Stafford anti humidity spray when my hair is still warm from the BBH and pulled through with my fingers.

The above is the result of years of trial and error, and the Lee Stafford things have been game changers.

My hairdresser just dyes my grey roots rather than my whole head and that has helped.

Thank you all, I’m going to try a few of the recommendations.
It’s my first time posting so unsure how to tag anyone in.

I also have a ppd allergy and did have greying frizzy hair.
I have a mild keratin treatment applied at hairdressers every 12 weeks. My hair feels so soft, silky and I feel myself again. Can recommend.

@Sunflower101 I’ve figured how to tag, can I please ask do you also colour your hair? If so what brand do you use? I use wella color fresh but find I need to use it every two weeks.
