Please explain tubing mascara to me

I've seen it written about, but I don't really understand it. It doesn't smudge, but it just wipes off with water?

Also, does it add volume to lashes, or length, or both? And is there one you would recommend?

Do you just apply it like normal mascara?

Thanks!

Yes, but the water has to be 37 degrees or warmer. It won't come off in the rain.

Mostly lengthening in my experience. I use a primer underneath if I want volume too but I don't usually.

And is there one you would recommend?

I like Beauty Pie and Eyeko.

Do you just apply it like normal mascara?

Yes, exactly the same.

throwaway20262025 · 16/10/2025 13:27

Whereas normal mascara just sort of paints your lashes, the tubing mascara wraps each of your lashes individually with a polymer 'tube' which is (supposedly) more resistant to smudging and flaking.

It's applied the same as normal mascara and comes off in the same way.

roycroppersshopper · 16/10/2025 13:29

It's epic, no more panda eyes! I recommend the Boots No 7 Stay Perfect or Blinc.

LooseCanyon · 16/10/2025 13:37

No more panda eyes! Amazing.

I use Benefit They're Real and love it, but am looking for something new.

Yes, but the water has to be 37 degrees or warmer.

This isn't correct. It will wipe off with micellar water or normal water on a cotton wool pad.

Just think of it as each individual hair is wrapped in a tiny tube of mascara and so you can pull each tube off. It comes off really easily and is less damaging to your eyelashes.

Micellar water can't dissolve the polymer tubes. If they are coming off with micellar water or cold water then it's the friction of the cotton pad which is removing the tubes, not the liquid itself. Warm water will loosen them without additional dragging. If cold water alone removed the polymer tubes then they'd fall off in the rain.

This.

To remove it correctly without rubbing, you do need hot water (not cold or lukewarm).

Tubing mascaras generally create length rather than volume.

I always use a tubing mascara because the shape of my eyes, the length of my lashes and the way they sit has always made my mascara very prone to rapid smudging. Tubing mascaras were a game-changer for me!

OK but I have eyeko, lashUk and beauty pie and all come off perfectly easily with micellar water and a cotton wool pad.

Not that I am a skank but If you sleep with tubing mascara on, does it smudge? Or fall off?

I believe you! However it's the action of the cotton pad and the friction it creates which is removing the tubes, not the micellar water (or cold water) itself.

Mauvehoodie · 16/10/2025 14:41

It's like putting little plastic tubes round your eyelashes, they're so good and especially if you wear contact lenses and don't want little bits in your eyes. I find most are just lengthening but the one I use is also quite volumising. I use this one or the same brand but volume one (slightly different shape brush and different colour lid) is also tubing. I use a flannel or microfibre cloth with warm-hot water to gently remove.

Sounds uncomfortable, but I hate the feeling of any mascara so I guess it’s not for me.

Branleuse · 16/10/2025 15:11

If you have a home bargains near you, this is my favourite mascara. It was already only about a fiver in boots, but its a quid in home bargains at the moment.
I really struggle with a lot of mascaras giving me panda eyes, and have tried so many.
Ive converted a few people to this one.

@LooseCanyon no it stays put pretty well. I use the boots No7 one and it’s got staying power! Warm water and a face cloth does shift it with no dragging/pulling though

LooseCanyon · 16/10/2025 15:15

Wow. So I can wake up in the morning with full mascara on, but no panda eyes/smudging?

I think my life is about to change.

If you want volume from a tubing mascara, try L'Oreal Double Extend. It's got a primer on one side and the tubing mascara on the other. The primer gives more volume under the mascara and it comes off the same way.

I really liked Glossier's tubing mascara, but I ran out and bought some Milani Highly Rated Lash Extensions (the names on these are so long) and it's just as good. It's in a green tube here, they have others that aren't tubing. I'm not sure if you have Milani there though.

I run warm water over my fingers then press them together with my lashes in between, then rinse off. Holding them in water loosens the bond.

Oh, it can last through the night, you might see a couple flecks that are the tubes under your eyes on the morning.

Sounds uncomfortable, but I hate the feeling of any mascara so I guess it’s not for me.

It isn't uncomfortable at all. I remove it by putting my index finger under the warm tap, then gently press my damp finger on my lashes (closed eyes). I go forward and back once and the mascara all flakes off. Then I just cleanse my face as usual. The idea of pulling tubes off my lashes put me off it for years and I was sure it would pull my lashes out, but it isn't necessary.
I really like Hourglass and Estée Lauder Doublelash. Currently using Suqqu which is fine. I was disappointed with the Elf one.
I love that it never smudges - even after a long hot busy day when I've fallen asleep in the car on the way home, there are no smudges when I wake up.
I also used to find with regular mascara (I never used waterproof) that even after removing it well at night, I could still have some smudges in the morning. I have never had that with tubing ones.

LuffyMe · 16/10/2025 16:11

Everything @BauhausOfEliott and @EgregiouslyOverdressed said. A true tubing mascara needs warm water to remove it effectively.

My favourites are Clinique Lash Power or High Impact Curling and Estee Lauder Doublewear Zero Smudge.

But lately for budgetary reasons, I've been using Revolution Wrap Lash Tubing Mascara and particularly like the burgundy shade. Lower down on their description, they tell you what tubing mascara is and how to remove it.

If i try to remove it under the shower with just soap and hot water it doesn’t fully work. I need cotton wool and micellar water. I have a charlotte tilbury one.

also i find for the 1st minute or so after i applied it, my lashes are a bit sticky. So i try to keep them open. Then it dries very quickly and i can forget about it until the evening. It stays on its great.

EndlessDistraction · 16/10/2025 16:21

I hate it, there have been a few times when I've bought it by mistake because the labelling doesn't make it clear. I find it really hard to remove, I use hot water and a flannel but it takes ages. But normal mascara doesn't flake or smudge on me so no need for
it.

No more panda eyes! Amazing.

I use Benefit They're Real and love it, but am looking for something new.

Total game changer for me as sadly I'm too lazy to regularly remove eye make up before bed 😱I only wear mascara and eye brow gel stuff, no foundation needed.

No more black smudges on my pillow cases. No more black smudges under my eyes that I try to remove with a wet finger!

It adds length and definition rather than masses of volume.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/10/2025 18:24

In my experience it doesn’t smudge, but it tends to crumble off throughout the day, so it doesn’t last as long as a regular mascara. I still prefer it to regular mascara though.

Freezingtoocold · 16/10/2025 18:29

I used to use the one from blinc but it dried up very quickly and didn’t last more than a couple of months. My favourite is Victoria Beckham’s. Very silky going on and lasts all day. Tube lasts more than 6 months so great value for money.
