What style and beauty changes have you made that you never thought you would?

I've always been a black eyeliner and black mascara kinda girl (teenage years were very emo/gothic) and vowed that would always be the case.

Recently, I've converted to dark purple mascara and an occasional brown eyeliner. It's really made my eyes pop!

What are your beauty converts?!

Not beauty, but my style convert is Accessories. I was never against accessorising, I was just too lazy to do it.
Now, I wear the right shoes/boots for the outfit. Swap bags over. Wear scarves, bracelets, belts etc. Wear a coat that goes with the rest of the outfit instead of just picking the closest one to hand on the coat rack.

It just makes the outfit look a lot more polished.

I bet you feel much more confident too 😃

Lipstick.
I remember when I was young, I'd do a full face of make up, but then nothing on my lips, maybe some clear lip balm.
Now, I don't leave the house without it - with or without a full face of make up. I have 3 go to shades, depending on what I'm doing/where I'm going and, similar to pp, it makes me feel more polished.

I feel I've made my style a lot more practical. Always loved fashion, would live in heeled ankle boots but switching to simple stylish trainers since doing more spontaneous mum activities (park/walks etc.) I feel better that I'm ready for more eventualities 😅 honestly surprised I sacrificed comfort for this long ha

I never used to bother much with make up as a young woman, but now I’m getting older I definitely need a bit more of a pop around the eyes. Like a PP I also never cared about accessories but now if I go out without a scarf/necklace/whatever that goes I feel way more ‘untogether’ and less confident.

eyeliner and bling, basically! I love my style now

Mygardenandme · 11/10/2025 13:57

Very short hair. I dont like it but it suits me and my hair. It looks good with zero effort.

Doing my own gel nails. I never really did my nails but for some random reason I decided to get them done and loved them. I cant afford to get them done professionally (I have to pay for more regular hair cuts now!) so I do them myself. Still mastering the shaping but I think they look good.

I grew out my fringe during the pandemic, I was in my 50’s and had always had a full fringe - now I can’t imagine ever having one.

I also was a heels wearer that switched to trainers and flats around the same time, although slightly regret that now as now having to relearn how to wear them as they feel so wobbly.

Unfortunately flats don’t quite go with everything!

Wadadli · 11/10/2025 14:22

I use concealer daily with kohl, eyeshadow and mascara. Nothing else (for skincare I use serum, moisturiser and primer every day whether I leave the house or not)

YYYDlilah · 11/10/2025 14:39

I don't want my eyes to pop. Misses the point

IfHeWantedToHeWould · 11/10/2025 14:40

I’ve stopped wearing foundation now I’m in my 40s and put on ‘radiant glow’ instead and I’ve also started wearing plum mascara and eyeliner. I also have stopped with the floral dresses as much.

treesandsun · 11/10/2025 15:03

I always wore black eyeliner but I felt it was starting to look harsh and aging. Brown was always too light when I'd tried it in the past. Now I have the Victoria Beckham dark brown /olive and really like them both.
I don't wear foundation any more .BB cream gives enough coverage.
I never used sun protection but wear it every day now since I've started using Tret.
I washed my hair every day since I was about 13 until this year. Less a .conscious beauty decision more because I work from home Clipping it up means it looks bearable.
I've always worn a lot of black and still do because I always felt not quite right in colours I finally worked out a few colours which do suit me and my colouring and started to add these in occasionally.
I never used to be a fan of trainers but they do work with some outfits and are easier to march around in then heels when you've got stuff to do. I didn't think I not wear high heels.

My teeth aren't the whitest so I've always been conscious of wearing lippy. I've actually found one I love though - Revolution 'White Wedding'. Very subtle.

Any tips on making it stay on longer?

Trainers seem to be very fashionable too so that's a win! Comfort is definitely the way forward 😃

Any tips on accessories? I always end up looking like I'm a kid who's raided their dress up box 😂

Is it a pixie cut? I've had mine cut into a wolf cut that needs trimming every 3-4 weeks.

Well done on the nails though! Is it just colours you do or are you aiming for nail art too?

Flats don't go with everything but I do think more people are choosing comfort so that balances it out haha.

I love my full fringe 😂

I've used the Revolution lip sticks before, but did find they didn't last very well. I used the old fashioned lipcote with them, but it dried my lips terribly.
I've recently found MUA Satin Lipstick Stylo. And I'm absolutely wowed by them! £3.50. They actually seem to moisturise my dry lips and lasts for ages!

It's a bit longer than pixi but that sort of thing. I had it cut a month ago and it already nedds doing again. I was thinking about letting it grow out to a very short wolf type cut.

Nail art isnt really my thing which is good because I am not at all artistic! I tried to do these messy stripes the other day and even failed that miserably. 🤣

Honestly? everything!😄
I spent most of my life obese and trying to hide away in plain clothes and no make up.
Now Ive lost the weight (and Im in my 50s 'who gives a f**k!?' era) so colours, patterns, animal print, make up, mini skirts, goth, retro.
Ive realiesed that clothes should be fun!

YYYDlilah · 13/10/2025 18:53

Should I go for a fringe? I have long greying hair and think it probably looks like lockdown hair.

I’m a big scarf convert, especially the silky ones that hide what gravity is doing to my neck. A lovely colourful silk neck tie with a business suit just makes me feel a bit more together.

don’t ask me about classy jewellery though as I’m a total magpie and clank my way around the city and it probably throws the whole thing off! I don’t care though, life’s too short.

notacooldad · 14/10/2025 19:23

I never thought id give up my long hair.
However in a moment of madness I had chopped to a shoulder length bob and a few months after that, slightly shorter.
It took years off me and it looks great. I should have done it a decade ago.

Also I had tattoos, not designs though! Ive had eyeliner and lip blush. This was over two years ago and they are still great. I would 100% recommend.

For contect I am 60.
