Skirt trousers

I quite like this new trend but can't find anything half decent on the Internet. Has anyone bought any nice skirt trousers recently?

Never ever seen them! What’s the point of them?

Sunflower3000 · 10/10/2025 13:44

“New trend” (cringing as I think back to 12 yr old me wearing skirt-trousers in 1998)

I’ve not seen the reincarnation of them, but they weren’t good back then, and if you’ve not found anything good so far then I wouldn’t bother!

rbe78 · 10/10/2025 13:59

What are skirt trousers? Like cullottes, or trousers with a skirt over the top?

Gettingbysomehow · 12/10/2025 14:30

They are trousers with a matching or high contrast mini wrap skirt over the top.my bottom. Is small but not my best feature due to large weight loss. These would look good on me I think. I don't think they are in the shops yet, possibly 2026.
Obviously runway pics are a bit mad but I've seen long and short skirts over trousers and they look ok.

I saw it on Friday, worn by a university student. It was a red midi dress worn over wide legged jeans. I can’t see it becoming popular.

Problemhooves · 12/10/2025 14:42

I remember these from the 90s! I loved them back then and I'm probably the only person happy to see them again based on this thread 😅

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/10/2025 14:45

I wore the trend last time and could be enticed again, lol. At the back of the wardrobe I have trousers with a wrap skirt over the top that I am going to dig out and see if it works. Great in cold weather - I love a layered look. Got mine from Marigold Shadows iirc.

dudsville · 12/10/2025 16:38

I never did either the dress over trousers or the item that came as a built in skirt trousers, but I quite like the idea in summer of wearing linen cropped or culottes under a linen dress.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 12/10/2025 16:47

Oh I remember the trend last time round too!

go mini dress over trousers. Ideally go for yoga pants type trousers, you want the top of the trouser to be as free from bulk/accessories as possible, no belt loops etc to bulk out under the skirt. I won’t be joining in with this one. Wisdom involves learning from past mistakes.

It was WILDLY popular in the 90s

Deschampsia · 12/10/2025 19:05

Sighted in my city. Seems to be the smarter/slimmer woman"s version of the perennially popular 'leggings and tunic/dress' formula. Actual trousers and waist definition seem to be the main differentiating factors.

Neither version tempts me: lycra is for sport and short dresses and skirts are for showing off the athletic figure I acquired doing sport.

I guess it didn’t make it over to the U.S. where it was either grunge wear or low slung jeans and tiny T-shirts.

Sadly, this shit look did make it to your shores as well. Late 90s/early 00s.

There are at least three of us now 😃

Blarn · 12/10/2025 20:10

They are in the shops now and I suspect many people are choosing not to wear such things as they remember how ridiculous they were the first time around. Asos have a pair of boot cut trousers with a miniskirt over as well, very similar to those worn at my school for about a month in 1998!

Like the catwalk pic, don't do it OP! It's a terrible trend!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 12/10/2025 20:12

I remember them well from the 90’s! Makes me feel very old as I was in my mid 20’s then!

Not for me, just feels like too much fabric around your middle which isn’t ideal for most people! I also have a saggy arse from weight loss despite weight training and a painful number of squats and lunges but nothing will convince me more fabric is the answer!

UpMyself · 12/10/2025 20:14

How about harem pants? The dropped crotch ones.

mcmuffin22 · 12/10/2025 20:14

Haha I am quite happy to see them come back for a little nostalgia dressing. I used to wear dresses over wide leg trousers in the late 90s/early 00s. Possibly inspired by All Saints or Natalie Imbruglia😆

lovemetomybones · 12/10/2025 20:17

I lived through it in the 90s- never again!!! What fresh hell decided this of all fashion styles should be the one to come back?!!!!!

GarlicPound · 12/10/2025 20:17

I whiled away some long evenings las week by watching the S/S26 collections. There are masses of dress-over-trousers combos, mostly long and swishy, combining different weights of fabric and SHINE! Tons of gleaming, glossy finishes with a lot of sculptural folds & seams.

I reckon the sculpture will be lost by the time it hits the high street - shame, but there's a limit to what you can do in a factory on a tight budget. I'm looking forward to seeing The Young Folk shimmering in swishy, semi-transparent confections when the sun comes back out.

WearyCat · 12/10/2025 20:20

I still wear dresses over trousers- usually jeans. I prefer it to wearing tights!

This is a positive side effect of getting older- as well as knowing all the music from first time around, I can now point out to my teenager that I’m so out of touch that I’m now cutting edge 🤣

DanceWithYourBalloon · 12/10/2025 20:34

I had a skort back in the day. I think they were bootleg with a matching material wrap type skirt attached at the waist. Late 90s I’d say.

rbe78 · 13/10/2025 10:35

Oh, we're going back to the early 00s, how fun! We never bought a specific 'trouser skirt' though, you mixed and matched your own.

AnnaMagnani · 13/10/2025 11:24

I was obsessed with these in the 90s. It looked like they would be incredibly flattering and make your bum look smaller.

When I actually tried them it was very much the reverse effect.

Won't be doing that a second time.
