Smellies as Christmas present for 9 year old - which brand?

Gettingonabitnow · 06/10/2025 20:20

Hi

Id like to get 9 year old DD some smellies as a stocking filler - by that I mean some body mist to wear for discos / parties, body lotion etc. Can anyone recommend a brand that would nourish her skin / has more natural products please? Just looked The Body Shop but nothing really on there.

I like the perfume making sets for this age group. They get to have a great time making their own, and just right for their skin.

Edited to have: I’ve only tried the Clementoni ones and they’ve been great. But there’s lots of different ones

Not British, but I’m quietly marvelling at how the use of “smellies” is such a vaguely repulsive term. Like “picky bits” kind of repulsive.

Sorry I know that is not the point, but as an ”English as a first language” speaker I’m sometimes amazed at how the British butcher the language.

carry on, anyway.

I am in my early 70s and we were calling gifts like these "smellies" when I was a child, so its use goes back a long way (though in those days it was usually a gift box of matching talcum powder, soap and a couple of bath cubes).

As for periods, it was not unusual, 60 years ago, in the UK, for girls to start their periods at 11 (I did and so did my best friend). 16 would have been considered late starting. Only one girl in my class which had around 15 girls was not having periods by the time she was 16.

Candypatthongworn · 10/10/2025 13:22

Try Boots & the 3 for one deals she can try a few different brands .
For those that say she’s too young I was 9 in 1976 and certainly remember getting bath products & a subtle lip gloss in my stocking .
(Mind you probably explains why I lurke around style & beauty threads !)

9 is too young to be concerned about body odor.

But here goes

Jason is a good organic brand that has body lotions in light scents that will moisturise her skin

Weleda is another good organic brand as well as the above, they also sell body spray/mists of rosewater, lavender etc that are all natural.

If you ever worked in a Y4/Y5 classroom you wouldn't be saying that.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 10/10/2025 13:28

Agree Sol de Janeiro seems to be really popular. I don’t think this or any of the other suggestions you’ve had though are going to nourish skin. That’s just pretty unrealistic for any cream lotion or spray.

GiddyDog · 10/10/2025 13:34

Sol de Janeiro is the top choice for my 11 year old DD. If you're looking for a more stocking filler friendly price point you can get sets of 'So' sprays pretty cheap in B&M and the like, she also likes those. Primark also have a shimmery Snow fairy dupe I saw yesterday which might go down well.

ThatLadyLady · 10/10/2025 13:35

Body shop?

My dd 10 loves daise brand. They do cute sprays in shape of a flower and shower gel liked whipped cream and reasonable prices for treats

My 11 yo also loves Daise but I always have to steer her away from it as it gives me a terrible headache! I'm not usually sensitive to scents but it's awful 😕 makes going into her room when she's been literally dousing herself in it quite the ordeal.

NoMonNoFunx · 10/10/2025 13:40

My daughter goes to primark and Superdrug. Had some lovely things.
i had to wing it as every one’s skin is different, some made her skin greasy some worked well. Trial and error.

Would you be buying scent or body spray for a 9-year-old boy?

Yes yes yes & yes

NoMonNoFunx · 10/10/2025 13:47

ThisDeepDreamer · 06/10/2025 20:25

I think 9 is just a bit too young for this sort of thing and that is probably why you could not find anything suitable.

Mmmm, you’re so wrong 😑 !!!

Are you serious?
At 9-

What is wrong with these folk thinking 9 is too young!
This is 2025 where the wee girls are taking periods as young as 9 and we don’t know why.
Boys are secreting body odour from under the arms from add young as 9
all considered normal!!!

NoMonNoFunx · 10/10/2025 13:54

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 06/10/2025 20:47

Ok, well I didn’t get my first period until 16, my DDs got theirs at 14 and 17.
9 is premature to get a period then. Even if you got your period, why be ashamed of it enough to think you need perfume?

What is “fun” about perfume? (I should disclose here that I am ND)

I love a sweet scent of perfume.
i love a wee wiff of something nice and I showers everyday

personal choice - you have your opinion you don’t need to understand any one else’s

fiorentina · 10/10/2025 13:58

Sephora or Body Shop sprays is what my 10 year old liked.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 10/10/2025 17:22

Fascinating that my opinion has generated the most responses of all the opinions expressed on here. Responses that were, on the whole, not necessary to post in addition to the users’ own socially conforming opinion. And women wonder why ND women mask. Why we pretend to agree. It’s because you don’t want our real opinion and we don’t want the hassle of defending it.

Omg we get it, you're not like other girlies and their early periods xo

DillyDallyingAllDay · 11/10/2025 19:55

bath and body works do a lot of body sprays that to me, aren’t very adult scents; I’d have a look

Spendysis · 11/10/2025 20:29

Sol de jenairo lush plouise soap and glory

It probably generated the most reactions because overall your comments were negative, patronising and ill-informed, on what was clearly supposed to be a lighthearted thread by a mum looking forward to getting her daughter some treats for Christmas.

thanks to everyone else, some great ideas x

Oh for crying out loud this has nothing to do with your neurodiversity. Other people just have a different opinion. That's all.

Werp · 13/10/2025 22:02

If you do want something more natural you could get her a few different hydrosols, they’re quite cheap and gentler than essential oils, and she could mix or layer them which could be fun.

rolandsrat · 14/10/2025 06:53

I would say Sol too OP. There will be deals coming with Black Friday. Yes, there are dupes in the likes of Primark and Aldi etc but I’d go with the real thing for a gift.

Well I suppose everything has to be seen in context.

to me, the context is the constant, habitual, misogynistic assumption that the interests of many young girls are pointless, vacuous and silly. It’s an extremely prevalent viewpoint.

The further context is of course that many sights, sounds and smells are
pleasant and humans seek them out even if they are not ‘needed’. I do find it quite hard to believe that anyone can’t grasp that, even if they have never experienced it themselves.

Amberlynnswashcloth · 14/10/2025 08:18

If you don't mind the chemicals there's plenty of fun, sweetie scented products in the bargain shops. If you want to go all natural you could make your own spray from a mix of essential oils and a base like moisturising almond oil.

Yes, my 9 year old boy likes a spray of lynx or similar on special occasions or if he is going somewhere.
