Smellies as Christmas present for 9 year old - which brand?

Hi

Id like to get 9 year old DD some smellies as a stocking filler - by that I mean some body mist to wear for discos / parties, body lotion etc. Can anyone recommend a brand that would nourish her skin / has more natural products please? Just looked The Body Shop but nothing really on there.

Another vote for sol de janeiro , they are pricey but they smell gorgeous. I have about 5 different ones and I love them for daytime as it isnt as strong as using a perfume.

APurpleSquirrel · 06/10/2025 23:17

DD recently turned 11; is going through puberty, definitely needs antiperspirants & likes the body sprays.
I got her the So… ones for Christmas last year & she has some Impulse ones too (O2 takes me back!!).
At that age don’t spend stupid amounts as they’ll likely just spray their room with it & you’ll be choked on a cloud of it as you come near their room!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 07/10/2025 07:15

Ive no longer got a nine year old, but as Sol is quite expensive Hogies does it slightly cheaper. (Im out if touch, but you'd buy a 9 year old perfume that expensive? I got my 27yr old a gift set last Christmas at black Friday and thought blimey thats dear)

Perfidia · 09/10/2025 06:38

@SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice I think if you don’t understand the fun of perfume you will simply have to take other people’s word for it. I can assure you that the enjoyment of actual perfume is generally far removed from wishing to disguise body odour.

However, your experience of puberty seems very far from the norm, as this thread shows.

And very many girls of 8 / 9 / 10 absolutely love experimenting with perfumes, lotions, potions for the fun of it.

Excellent suggestions here already, OP; Lush, and SdJ are hugely popular. I’d add (more niche, more expensive but do actually produce products especially for young skin)

When I was 9 back in the 1960s we had Pretty Peach products...possibly Avon? So smellies for preteens have been around a long time

pilates · 09/10/2025 07:03

Soap & Glory
Snow Fairy

legalseagull · 09/10/2025 07:16

Yea - Sol or Drunk Elephant

You clearly don’t have a 9 year old DD.

OP - the only possible answer to this question is Sol de Janeiro.

I’d suggest the minis pack (they’re not that mini at all) from Boots or Sephora. Extra kudos points if it comes in a Sephora paper bag.

Would you be buying scent or body spray for a 9-year-old boy?

FreddieRocks · 09/10/2025 07:54

Another one to consider is Spots and Stripes. It’s a small company and only uses natural ingredients etc. I’m planning to get my 9 year old daughter some bits from them.

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 09/10/2025 07:57

The Range sell the So perfumes & I believe they’re cheaper than Boots. They also do the Chupa Chups, Drumstick etc

Why ever not if he was interested enough to ask for it? (Both boys and girls in my family have shown an interest in the adults’ perfumed unctions from around that age.)

As human beings we have been smoothing and scenting our bodies since we got up on our hind legs. There’s nothing in the least strange, perverse, effeminate or unusual about it …

My daughter loves sol, lidl do a good copy. She also loves lush but I would do this as a gift card and let her go in and pick! My dd loves the experience of lush!!
The child's farm range is nice too, smells lovely, gentle on skin

Honestly I'd rather 9-year old boys started learning what good fragrance smells like and how to use it sparingly, rather than indiscriminately fumigating their rooms with Lynx. I remember gymnastic classes at that age where, in the changing rooms after, we could have asphyxiated someone with the amount of Impulse 'Free Spirit' we sprayed around.

MabelMoo23 · 09/10/2025 21:00

I’ve got a 9 year old (nearly 10)

it’s all about Sol De Janeiro - sneer as much as you like, but it’s what they like and she absolutely loves it

Glitchymn1 · 09/10/2025 21:06

DD and friends use Sol. B&M and Aldi have good dupes.

SomethingFun · 09/10/2025 21:13

Primark have a dupe of snow fairy which we have in a shower foam but I think they had a glittery body spray as well but it had sold out when I was there. I must be the only person on earth that doesn’t like sol stuff 😁 DD has a Percy pig body spray and what young girl wouldn’t want to smell like a pig? 😁

Plmnki · 09/10/2025 21:24

Not British, but I’m quietly marvelling at how the use of “smellies” is such a vaguely repulsive term. Like “picky bits” kind of repulsive.

Sorry I know that is not the point, but as an ”English as a first language” speaker I’m sometimes amazed at how the British butcher the language.

carry on, anyway.

Hayley1256 · 09/10/2025 21:34

My dd9 love Sol De Janerio and Maise.

It’s not effeminate, and it’s not strange or unusual for adults, or even teenagers. Personally I don’t approve of 9-year-olds being encouraged into the whole make-up/scent scene - they’re still just children. But you do you!

jumpingjaque · 09/10/2025 23:05

Oh my 8 year old daughter loves the “dupes” in primark! They are lovely and loads of choice :)

chickenroll · 06/10/2025 21:24

9 isn't in any way premature to start your periods.

To be honest it quite is a quite a young age to start having periods. Certainly a lot younger than the norm.

So you hijack a post to make a point because you find it repulsive as you don’t understand the concept and it isn’t your first language?

It is about scented gifts for a child.

“Smellies”is a long term standard saying about little pieces of scented soaps given as gifts. Catch a grip of yourself.

frostydaytoday · 09/10/2025 23:48

My dd 10 loves daise brand. They do cute sprays in shape of a flower and shower gel liked whipped cream and reasonable prices for treats

stample · 10/10/2025 06:28

Bought dd7 the so…? Set for her birthday , literally for her school discos and whatnot. Superdrug do their own brand ones too. As for her skin sensitivity etc I can’t comment however my dd does have sensitive skin and she was fine with them products

Evergreen21 · 10/10/2025 06:57

Currently my 9 year old uses a natural deodorant and a ted baker spray mist from a beauty set I got a while back. She only wears it on the weekend but she can wear it to school (she had dcd though and has to be reminded). I have seen dupes for Sol de janeiro at Home bargains so you could check there. I have the Sol de janeiro numbers 59 and 62. I find 59 really unpleasant and use it as a bin spray. 62 is marginally better. 59 is strongly vanilla scented. I do have a few coming up in advent calendars so will regift or sell on vinted. Definitely worth checking vinted.

I'm grateful for the suggestions of natural spray mist and will look into those more for dd.
At 10 I started my periods and used an antiperspirant and impulse sprays.
