Hi hope someone can help, I've been invited to my first army mess function, only really been told dress to be past knee not getting much other help, typical man 🙄 Ive saw this dress could anyone advise if they think it would be ok, or too much which I'm worried it would be!? Or any advise on what to wear.
Thanks so much

In the mess you will need to cover your shoulders. At least until the dancing starts!

Cantseetreesforthewood · 05/10/2025 07:44

Can you find some pictures of last events?

There will be some very smart army uniforms there. The women seem to be a bit more variable in their clothing round here. I've just flicked through the latest pictures - everything from glittery full length things to plain black shirt dresses.

The only bit that would concern me is you'll get a lot of double takes with the nude lining.

Thank you its so confusing knowing what to wear 😫 it dosnt look as nude when on do you think I should go for something less dressy ?

Much better than model pick and the lining is much more subtle in your picture. You look fab go for it.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 05/10/2025 08:24

The dress is stunning on you.
Wear it! Consider the first comment about shoulders might need to be covered - not an issue for our lot - I see lots of shoulders.

New6754 · 05/10/2025 08:29

I’d absolutely have worn that to a mess function when DH was still in - you look lovely in it.

But yes… I’d have needed something to cover shoulders while at dinner at least. Black fine knit/silk bolero jacket would be good. Or a wrap (although I always found them fiddly).

VenusClapTrap · 05/10/2025 08:39

That dress looks so much nicer on you than it does on the model.

I’ve never been to an army function, but a friend who went to a lot of them used to post pictures of herself in similar gowns. They appeared to be very glam affairs.

RhubarbAndMustard · 05/10/2025 08:43

I’ve been to a few and that dress is perfect but yes to covering shoulders. All the above suggestions would work nicely.

Thank you, I'm so stressed about wearing right thing especially as it's first one ive been too, ive looked at every dress on Internet I think 🙃

The dress is fine on you (but not the model, it looked see through!)

This might seem obvious... but no trainers. (Its happened a few times recently at ones I've been too and the host has got in trouble... its OK if cleared before hand for disability/injury reasons although just flat shoes is preferable)

ByCandidPinkReader · 05/10/2025 08:56

A couple of other options ive ordered but not tried yet are ... honestly I've got my head spinning ... I love the first dress, I posted, was just worried its OTT

That's perfect, but you usually need shoulders covered for the dinner - check with your host if that's the case at this do.

If so, just look for a shawl or cape for that section of the night.

FusionChefGeoff · 05/10/2025 09:02

That’s a stunning dress and you look amazing. It’s not OTT at all just gorgeous!!

ByCandidPinkReader · 05/10/2025 09:09

Ahh thank you all so much, I think I will go for it then.

Don’t worry about it being OTT, I’ve been to loads of RAF Mess Balls and everyone gets dressed up! I usually spend the night looking at everyone else’s gorgeous dresses thinking where did they get that from!

JurassicPark4Eva · 05/10/2025 10:51

Agree @rockstarshoes- my experience is Naval but my last frock was a floor length sequin number with bat wing sleeves (I was a size 24 at the time so had limited options but felt amazing in this). By no means was I over dressed!

Most ladies will use it as an excellent excuse to dress to the eyeballs and sequins, floor length sweeping skirts or short trains, bling jewellery etc are all pretty normal!

JustAnotherMinionForAMerchantOfDeath · 05/10/2025 11:23

OTT is kinda the idea when it comes to these events.

ByCandidPinkReader · 05/10/2025 15:15

Thanks for all your advice and help. Think I will go with that dress then, I'm not used to getting dressed up 😂
