Eternity ring - ladies your thoughts please

I’m a 49 year old man and want to buy my girlfriend of 18 months an eternity ring for her birthday to show my love for her.
However I’m concerned that eternity rings are often associated with birth of a child / wedding anniversaries etc.
Would it seem odd to buy an eternity ring as a present in my circumstances?
Thank you.

I think you can give an eternity ring at any point or occasion, it's a symbol of love. So I’d say go for it!

My only thing is just be careful about how you go about giving it it to her. You don't want to accidentally give off ‘proposal vibes’. But try and do it more subtly than my boyfriend (now husband) did - he gave me a ring box (for Christmas) and as he was handing it over said ‘it’s not an engagement ring’ - it did the trick of managing my expectations, but was perhaps a bit too blunt with the delivery! 😂

If my boyfriend of 18 months got out a ring box I would expect a proposal. If you don't want to marry her, buy a tennis bracelet. If you want her to dump you (assuming she has any self-esteem) then yeah sure give her a diamond ring on her birthday but with the caveat you're definitely NOT asking to marry her, no NOT THAT.

Eternity rings are for after you’re married. I wouldn’t get her a ring at all. Too loaded.

Personally I think an eternity ring is a bad idea.

could you ask her would she like dress ring for her birthday? If she says yes go choose a gem stone ring together

When I met my now DH we knew very soon when we met that we would get married, we bought what we called a commitment ring, it was a gesture between us that no one else knew. We’ve been married for 17 years now and I never take it off. Just an idea for you.

DorothyStorm · 05/10/2025 01:59

terrible idea. 18 months? No. And why does you age natter? What finger do you expect her to wear it on? Out of curiosity, how old is this girlfriend of 18 months?

FeralWoman · 05/10/2025 02:08

An eternity ring is about recognising long term commitment after being married for a number of years. Engagement ring then wedding ring then eternity ring. Without the first two it’s not an eternity ring. It’s just a ring.

By all means buy her a ring to express your love to her but don’t call it an eternity ring. Just make sure the shop has a good exchange or refund policy in case she wants a different metal, stone or style.

over the top, too try hard.
jewelry is fine, just not a ring especially an eternity ring.

Puzzledtoday · 05/10/2025 04:40

An eternity ring is the wrong vibe and any ring will look like a proposal. Get her a necklace in a larger box and make she can change it for something you both like if she’s not keen on your choice.

CloverPyramid · 05/10/2025 07:19

An eternity ring isn’t any more meaningful than any other piece of jewellery, at this point in your relationship. Get her a different piece, unless you’ve discussed eternity rings and she’s said just thinks they’re pretty and would like one.

If neither of you want to marry, giving an Eternity ring would be a lovely gesture in a long relationship/after you’ve reached a certain level of other commitments. Essentially symbolising marriage-level commitment without the legal side. At 18 months, it’s meaningless.

It’s only an eternity ring if you call it that, otherwise it’s just a nice ring.

She’s 2 years younger then me.

Thanks everyone. In the back of my mind I wasn’t sure but very glad I checked on here before I made a blunder.
