Need help - want to have a fresh youthful looks but I am neither fresh, nor youthful and have never learned how to put makeup on.

I am 51, lots of wrinkles (too much sun in my youth).

When I wear makeup it's either so barely there I shouldn't have bothered, or I resemble a drag queen.

I was stunned today to learn that concealer goes on after foundation / BB cream. I always assumed concealer first.

Help:
Essentials for mature skin make up (natural, fresh) - please recommend your faves.

Also any recommendations for great tutorials for older skin - I have looked at heaps today but the models are either in their 20s or in their 70s and I don't have an hour each day to spare - maybe 10 minutes tops.

I drink heaps of water and my skin is clear (if a bit wizened).

Edited - bad spelling / grammar

By essentials I mean product recommendations.

Try Wayne Goss on YT or Erica Taylor ericataylor2347 on Insta (she's got 1.7m followers so she's not a random I promise!). Erica is absolutely hilarious and totally all over mature skin as she's I think 49. Great tips for lifting your features to where they once were!!

Eborian Bb cream ( impossible to apply wrong and natural but covers a multitude) , soft cream blush on apples of cheeks and lips ( bobbi brown does a great one) nude pencil on inner eye, dab of concealer and black mascara - less than 5 mins and very natural

Honestly you cannot have fresh youthful looks when you are 51. Just be proud of who you are and your current stage in life.

TanteRose · 28/09/2025 13:33

Go to the Trinny London website and do a match-to-me - they’ve got good skincare too, which helps.

or if you’re near one of the stores, you can book an appointment

I am very proud of myself. I was just wanting a bit of a freshen up. I wear no makeup at all and am looking very tired. Not expecting a miracle LOL 😆

I like No7 Airbursh Away primer. Makes my skin look a bit more youthful (I'm nearly 48).

Daniel Sandler watercolour blush. It's really sheer. I accidentally bought a glittery one but went back and got a matte one, which is perfect.

Clarins wonder perfect 4d mascara.

I use Lancome concealer. I don't use any foundation so just put it on and blend with one of those sponge things.

Avon glimmer stick eyeliner. I have hooded eyes, so just use it on the outside of my lower lid. It's pointless for me to use anything other than mascara on my upper eye/lid!

This all takes about 3 mins to apply and I think I look OK!

Following with interest!
I second Erborian BB cream, so easy to apply, I often just wear just that on top of moisturiser + mascara.

If you want eyeshadow I recommend a cream eyeshadow such as Revlon colourstay crème shadow in praline. Moisturise your eyelids first.

I always used to recommend Nip + Fab's Dragon's Blood Serum to women my age for plumping out fine lines (it won't do anything for deep lines), but they don't make it any more. What I use instead is Rodial Dragon's Blood Sculpting Gel, https://www.rodial.com/products/dragons-blood-sculpting-gel?_pos=8&_psq=sculpting&_ss=e&_v=1.0 which I like better than the Nip + Fab but don't like the price. I don't wear make up but I think it would probably work well under it.

Dragon's Blood Sculpting Gel | Plump + Define

Dragon’s blood sculpting gel is an innovative anti-ageing formula that helps to volumise and define facial contours. Available Internationally from Rodial.co.uk

I also lean drag queen with very little make up.

I spend more time on my skin - I may have wrinkles but I can still have a glow. Dermatica will always be my recommendation and Cerave products.

Tinted moisturiser, bit of light bronzer, cream blush, mascara, under eye concealer and round the nose. I am less interested in eyeshadow as it’s not very modern, I just don’t want blue eyelids.

Imtoooldforallthis · 28/09/2025 16:44

I would suggest Garnier BB cream buffed in really well , then a dusting of Laura Gellar balance n glow. A bit of blusher , eyeliner and a tubing mascara and your good to go. I can do that in 5 mins.

estrogone · 28/09/2025 22:29

Thank you all! I am going to look into all these suggestions. Much appreciated 👍 🙏 👍

Eyelash curlers, even if I don’t apply any makeup I still always curl my lashes

NapoleonsToe · 28/09/2025 22:44

I much prefer Erborian CC cream to the BB cream. It's lighter and more luminous. That, or Trinny London SPF 30 cream or BFF de-stress. All are easy to put on with your fingers, no special techniques or brushes needed.

If you don’t mind spending, Armani luminous silk foundations are fantastic. I’m in my 50’s too. You need to visit a counter to get a good match though. I’m also looking at the new Victoria Beckham/Augustinius Bader x foundation drops which look interesting (although v v spendy) but might do for a day when I can’t be arsed to do full foundation.

Netaporter · 29/09/2025 04:09

I’d also suggest an eyelash lift and tint which saves the hassle of curling eyelashes and putting on mascara and a professional tint and eyebrow tidy.
