@JoRaRaRaI understand exactly what you mean and I think grief spending can be very much a thing after you lose someone. I found it very noticeable after my mum died, and am trying to get things under control now. But when you first lose someone close, I think buying yourself a treat helps to take your mind off your grief, albeit briefly.

My comment wasn’t limited to this thread but I have seen comments here along the lines of “selling 2/3”, “making my money back”, “made more than I spent”, etc - that feels transactional. I more had in mind the ppl who buy multiple ACs then sell them for a profit on eBay.

Regarding unwanted items, if you can afford a luxury AC then there are many places to donate the things you don’t want.

What’s wrong with making some money back? Most people who buy advent calendars are looking for value, that’s why they buy them in the first place, rather going to the shop and selecting 25 products of their own choice.

This is also why calendars that cost the same (or almost the same) as buying the items individually, don’t usually sell well.

BACs are a consumer product, they are not a necessity, so maybe this thread isn’t for you if this bothers you.

I've stopped watching cosmetopia, she's too negative for me 🤣

I get what you mean about overconsumption though and I'm totally guilty of it this year, but I think everyone has their own reasons for buying and enjoying these things. For me, I’ve had a really hard time recently after suddenly losing someone very close to me (she was 37 and healthy 😔) and all I've done is spend since, much to the horror of my husband 🙈 honestly, getting caught up in the excitement here, chatting about the calendar designs, products and prices has been a lovely little escape for me 🩷 Sometimes a bit of beauty joy is exactly what you need to get through tough days 💕🎁

Edited

Sorry to hear about your friend. 🙁
I am exactly the same in using this to bring some joy. My dad got diagnosed with bowel cancer in July so it’s been a tough few months. These threads and my beauty purchases have been a good distraction.

Definitely, it has been a good distraction. I've also been doing my Frankenstein calendar, so I've also been researching products from other ACs to pick up on vinted, watching unboxings to see which drawer they come from in their calendar to put it in that drawer in mine, getting excited over bargains and vinted arrivals, and organising the Frankenstein calendar. I obviously can't go on like it and just buying so much stuff, for a start, I've only got a little house 🤣 and I don't want to get into debt.

@JoRaRaRa sorry to hear about your friend - remember to ask for help if you need it x @pinkchampagne1 that’s rubbish, hoping for the best for your dad x

She was my cousin, but also one of my best friends. She was 6 weeks younger than me, so we grew up together, we were in the same class at school, worked together at 2 different companies, went on holidays, went clubbing together, she was my bridesmaid along with my 2 sisters. It's been an awful shock for our family and we still don't know why she died. She went to bed and just didn't wake up 😞

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad 😞 that's so sad. Do you know if he will be OK or is it too early to tell?

That's exactly my point, we only really see each other’s beauty buys on here, but we never know what’s happening behind the scenes in people’s lives, so it’s always best not to judge ✌️🩷

ElizabethG81 · 09/10/2025 14:01

I’ve just got the Boots Skincare calendar and am really impressed, I think it’s a great option (obviously not if you’re looking for makeup) and a great price at £70.

I’m so sorry, how awful for you and the whole family.

BakeOffRewatch · 09/10/2025 14:08

I’m sorry you both felt you had to share your deep pain on this thread, I know others are going through similar and use this for escapism. It’s just an online thread on Style and Beauty, not in Philosophy/Religion or AIBU. It is a feature of MN, so throw the pissy chips away and get yourself a new portion for the next thread @keepincool. There was even a little tiff on the Telly Addicts board the other day, where a user asked OP not to use capitals whilst at the same time telling other posters not “to tell people what to do as that’s boring and pointless” 😂. The internet attracts all sorts, just ignore the posts you don’t want to engage with. @pinkchampagne1 @JoRaRaRa your sadness is a sign that you made meaningful and beautiful connections IRL and that’s a wonderful thing.

Enjoying the discussion and watching Emily in Paris. Now there’s some consumerism.

Thank you. That new thread can’t come soon enough and we can get back to joyful talks where it really isn’t that serious 🩷 We definitely shouldn’t be falling out over advent calendars 🤣 No one here’s buying to resell, it's just a few of us swapping, selling, and treating ourselves. Let’s save the outrage for the real villains… like whoever bought 17 Harrods fragrance calendars to flog for profit 😅

Growlybear83 · 09/10/2025 14:10

@pinkchampagne1 I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. It must be a very hard time for you. And I’m really sorry about your cousin@JoRaRaRa. The same thing happened to a friend’s daughter a number of years ago and it adds another different dimension to a loss when it’s unexplained like that. 😞

BakeOffRewatch · 09/10/2025 14:17

Waiting for it to get 995. Keeping an eye while I watch tv and enjoy a cup of tea whilst baby naps. Bet baby wakes up as soon as it gets to 995 and thread fills up!

Haha that Xmas It toy chat did make me think of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film “Jingle All The Way”. A BAC film along those lines would be fantastic. Maybe a mix of “Jingle All The Way” and “Death Becomes Her”. @JoRaRaRa your villain would be good there!

The narrator on RHOBAC would say:
“It’s been a dramatic week in the world of the RHOBAC, emotions ran high, credit cards ran hot, and patience ran out. But as a new thread dawns, our ladies are ready to swap tension for toner and drama for dewy skin, united by the difficulty to resist a good GWP.” 🤣✨

I love Jingle all the way, I watch it every year 🤣 the fighting scene in the factory cracks me up no matter how much I watch it 🤣

Dont join a thread dedicated to beauty AC if you are going to judge what people buy or do with it. Stick with a Cadburys and let us enjoy our purchases in peace!🎅

Seahorses12 · 09/10/2025 14:30

I would just like to thank everyone who has shared their AC purchases and Vinted finds on here, it's cheered me up no end and I've enjoyed every moment. It's so nice to have this thread to escape to. One of the memorable highlights for me was @JoRaRaRa's account of the H Beauty event! 😍

I have that too and think it is great value. I've given my dd the fake tan and replaced it with a k-beauty serum. I will also be offloading the pimple patches. I just need to find some teenagers.

IlovePond · 09/10/2025 14:45

So sorry to hear about your loved ones @JoRaRaRa and @pinkchampagne1

It’s very true that no one knows what’s really going on with other people, but for me, this thread, (and others like it), are a much-needed distraction. I genuinely enjoy reading about other people’s purchases and looking at all the shiny, pretty things - most of which I am not going to buy/couldn’t afford to buy, (even if I wanted to!)

I don’t think anyone on here is/or wants to be a dealer - buying 17 calendars to resell, leaving other people to miss out - for example!

I have no qualms whatsoever about selling on that Shiseido eye pencil from last year’s calendar, (the horrific colour of which haunts me to this day 😹) and any lash serums that find their way to PondMansions are going straight on eBay! Someone else gets a bargain and I get a few pounds back if I’m lucky!

Given how terrible I am on eBay anyway, and the awful luck I have with both buyers and sellers, I don’t think anyone would think I was ever ‘in it’ for profit!

Re: Cosmetopeia- I used to really enjoy her videos but I am finding recent ones quite difficult to watch. I very much do agree with her on the ‘GWP purchase’ comments and she’s certainly saved me from a few bad buys recently!

BakeOffRewatch · 09/10/2025 14:45

whoops don’t know what happened there. Thank you @RainbowZebraWarrior

I've been on these threads for almost 10 years. There has been a significant shift in tone. @OvaHere that may answer your question too. Things have always released at different times, but generally the lists would be released ahead of time rather than the spoilers retailers have started to do. To be honest, the fact you say there are 297 (297!!) BACs available this year highlights my point beautifully, it's far too much choice. And as for my comment about buying 'anything and everything', it was more to do with the lack of deliberation that we've seen on these threads in the past.

IlovePond · 09/10/2025 14:47

I second @Seahorses12 thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread and the previous ones! On to the next…
