Loafers or ankle boots?

If you could only buy/wear one style this autumn would it be loafers or ankle boots?

I'm starting a new job where the dress code is casual to smart casual. I previously wfh and got lazy with my style, definitely need to buy some new shoes.

I'll be wearing mainly black trousers or smart jeans. I noticed a lot of trainers in the work space and already have trainers, but not sure what other footwear to go for.

Boots, boots and more boots. Lol. I don’t like loafers though, supremely ugly imo. Loafer lovers will be along in a minute..

Boots. I don't like loafers.

I think boots would be more versatile.
Although I do love loafers (and brogues) too!

I got influenced by loafer lovers on here a couple of weeks ago, ordered a pair but not sure they're me. Think I might go straight to ankle boots!

I also have black ballet flats but I don't know how much longer I can wear them as it gets colder.

I’m a steadfast loafer lover but heading into winter you’re better off with boots.

Ankle boots rock! I do like flat Mary Jane too, but boots of all persuasions just work with so many outfits and occasions.

Tough choice as I have both and wear both lots but if I had to choose one only it would be ankle boots.

Ygfrhj · 25/09/2025 11:42

Knee boots? Ankle boots might feel a little dated now, depending on the style.

If OP was wearing lots of dresses I would agree with you. But she will be wearing black trousers or jeans.

As long as they're not a dated style, you won't go wrong with ankle boots

A classic chelsea boot goes a long way

UpMyself · 25/09/2025 12:17

I'd never wear loafers.

FullOfMomsense · 25/09/2025 12:39

I wear boots almost every day in autumn/winter. Chelsea, combat, heeled, platform etc. I have many many many pairs.

But loafers with office wear is timeless and classy, especially on the slightly warmer days we have at the moment

TroubledBloodyMary · 25/09/2025 23:12

I wear ankle or knee high boots almost all the time - but that’s with skirts or dresses. I much prefer shoes with trousers, so if trousers are your plan for your work wardrobe I’d suggest getting some shoes you actually like.

DoubtfulCat · 26/09/2025 06:37

Boots. Like pp I really dislike loafers as a style, but if you have to walk any distance outside you’ll be so glad of boots when it’s teeming down with rain or minus five in the morning. Shoes are ok for indoors or autumn/spring, but in winter it’s chilly-ankle time.
